Even Horne agrees that some perks of fasting remain with minimal food intake: “One mechanism that is known to remain active when a small amount of food is consumed is ketosisas long as you consume less than 50 grams of carbohydrates ,” he says. “Some effects, such as the impact of fasting on the gut microbiome, may be different depending on whether it’s a water-only fast or a very-low-calorie diet with a small amount of food consumed, but both may provide some level of benefit when compared to eating a standard amount of food.”

One Exception To The Rule

There is an exception to the no-cal rule while intermittent fasting. If you prefer your coffee with cream and sugar, that’s still on the menu with the 5:2 intermittent fasting method. The reason has to do with how you restrict your caloric intake.

The 5:2 method differs from the 16:8 method, where you’re only supposed to consume calories during a certain period of time each day. The 5:2 method, however, doesn’t restrict you to a certain time period. Rather, it restricts how many calories you consume for certain days of the week.

The 5:2 intermittent fasting method means that five days out of the week you consume a recommended amount of calories for your height, weight, age, and sex. But for two, nonconsecutive days of the week you cut your caloric intake down to about 20% to 25% of your recommended amount.

Therefore, you can consume whatever you like on the 5:2 method including a cappuccino at 8 am, if so choose. You just have to be aware of how that will count toward your total caloric intake on those two restrictive days.

I dont avoid dairy. I used to be sensitive to dairy, but after a year of intermittent fasting , I found I could have dairy in moderation. I still prefer coconut milk in my coffee, but all brands taste alike. Some are more creamy than chunky. You just have to find the right kind. Make sure you get full-fat coconut milk. Just put enough coconut milk to get the color of coffee you like. Even full-fat coconut milk does contain carbs, so that is definitely pushing the envelope.     Most people follow a 16/8 Intermittent Fasting schedule of at least 16 hours fasted, and ideally, during this period you consume zero calories.

    And even if youre going hardcore, completely resetting your insulin and destroying the excess estrogen with a 72 hour fast, the same zero calorie rules still apply while fasting.

    Black coffee has zero. Green tea has zero. Water has zero. Sparkling water has zero.

    But milk has SOME calories.

    Is it the end of the world?

    Well, lets remind ourselves of why were fasting in the first place.

    Is Intermittent Fasting Safe

    People can begin intermittent fasting for a variety of reasons. Some may begin to lose and manage weight and while others may be using intermittent fasting to address other health issues that could use a change in diet.

    Regardless of reasoning, anyone planning to begin IF should consult and receive approval from their primary care doctor. If youre pregnant, breastfeeding, or have medical problems like, intermittent fasting may not be right for you.

    If you begin intermittent fasting and experience unusual headaches, mental health disturbances such as anxiety or depression or have unusual changes in mood, consult with your primary healthcare provider to determine the best strategy or plan for your individual wellness.

    Intermittent fasting is not for everyone. Even if intermittent fasting is safe for you, it might not be the right diet for you.

    First of all, this depends on WHY you’re using Intermittent Fasting. If you are completing a water fast or fasting for religious purposes, than ANY food will break your fast. However, if you’re following the Complete Intermittent Fasting Bundle guidelines in order to tap into fat burning mechanisms and boost energy levels, then your criteria is a little different.

    One of the main goals of Intermittent Fasting is to stabilize blood glucose levels and reduce the insulin response. This will help to shift your body out of storing mode and into fat burning mode. So the question you want to ask is… what causes a spike in your blood glucose and insulin? The answer: carbohydrates .

    Carbohydrates aren’t EVIL. In fact, when properly used, carbs can actually HELP you achieve your wellness goals as well. But during your fasting period, a good rule of thumb is to keep carbohydrates and protein to below 1g each. Everyone’s body will respond to glucose/amino acids differently, but this low level is generally a good place to start.

    1 tsp. of cinnamon contains roughly .8g net carbs and .1g protein. So with the 1g total carbohydrates and protein rule in mind, then cinnamon will not break your fast. When you stick to less than 1 tsp. of cinnamon during your fast, cinnamon will not break your fast. However, if you are combining multiple spices, make sure that the total number is less than 1g. For this reason, sticking to around 1/2 or 1/4 tsp. cinnamon is ideal.

    /8there Are Other Limitations Too

    That being said, not all forms of coffee can be easily had while you are Intermittent Fasting.

    Do remember, while caffeine in itself may not be a bad ingredient, what you add to your coffee may make it unhealthy.

    Adding excess amounts of sugar, whipping cream, topping ingredients may add to your calorie count. Sugar alternatives like jaggery, honey, even if low-calorie, can still disturb your regime.

    Again, adding milk may also be a contentious issue. While there are some who feel adding a spoonful or splash of milk to your coffee is okay and won’t break your fast, too much cream/ dairy or fat sources are best steered clear off.

    Intermittent Fasting With Coffee And Tea

    Cant start your day without coffee? Same. The good news is that when youre intermittent fasting, coffee and tea are finejust hold the milk and sugar.

    Most experts agree that a cup of black coffee or tea wont dramatically impact your intermittent fasting results, even though youre technically breaking your fast by drinking a few calories. In fact, the caffeine can help suppress your appetite .

    But if you want to maximize the benefits of autophagy, stay as close to zero calories as possible during your fasting window.
