There Are Brands You And I Might Not Know At All About But Have Excellent Product Quality And Ethical Business Models

TBS Report

Many of us share an intimate attachment with coffee and there are plenty of options for us to pick from. Some of us prefer the one that is right in front of us and it is convenient as well. But some people like to put in the effort to research and find the best options.

While buying coffee, people generally have three qualifiers: Price, taste, and the third one, which mostly affects our consumer choices on a subconscious level, is the popularity of the brands.

Now, popularity differs for each brand. Some brands can be intrinsically bad in their business practices but because of clever marketing, they are the ones consumers buy the most from. Then, there are brands you and I might not know at all about but have excellent product quality and ethical business models.

We have picked the top 10 coffee brands around the world that have been around for a while that you might be familiar with.

1 Starbucks

Founded in 1971 at Seattle, Washington

Everyone knows about Starbucks, thanks to their aggressive marketing and shrewd advertising techniques. But, does everyone like Starbucks coffee? The answer differs.

The brand is not known for sourcing and roasting the best coffee beans. Most of their coffee beans are dark roasted, meaning, they taste bitter. And many consumers, who know their coffee, complain that Starbucks coffee has a distinct burnt taste.

2 Dunkin’ Doughnuts

Founded in 1950 at Canton, Massachusetts

3 Costa Coffee

Founded in 1971 at London, United Kingdom

Best Tasting: Verena Street

Freshly roasted and prepared in small batches, the Verena Street Mississippi Grogg out-brewed all the other options with a warm and inviting taste our staff would love to wake up to. We found that this brew was rich and robust without being overpowering or tasting cheap.

Our trusty testers rated this coffee a 7.55 out of 10 on our overall testing scale. In the aroma category the coffee scored a 7.60 and received the most 10s out of any coffee we tested. Those who like strong black coffee rated the aroma low with the thought it was going to be fruity or weak, but were pleasantly surprised with the taste. The coffee finish rated highly as well at 7.80 out of 10. Tasters specifically noted the caramel finish. Most guessed incorrectly that this was a Medium coffee roast.

Top Pick: Verena Street – Mississippi Grogg

Prepared in small batches, this sustainably sourced crowd pleaser was one of the best tasting coffee and is good for your wallet, and the environment.

The price is the exact average price of all the coffees we tested. The name Mississippi Grogg might throw you off, but this family owned and operated processing center is based in Iowa along the Mississippi river valley. Verena Street is 100% sustainably sourced from Rainforest Alliance certified coffee farms, is fairly traded and kosher. If you are a conscious consumer and look at where your money is being spent, we recommend checking out some other unknown brands we tested as well.

Features To Look For In Instant Coffee

Below are some of the key elements to look out for when selecting your favorite instant coffee.

Beans – There are two main types of coffee beans to look out for. They are known as Coffee Arabica and Coffee Robusta. Many companies will use a blend of both although a more gourmet blend will have a greater concentration of or might be exclusively made up from Arabica beans. Arabica bushes which produce these beans can be found globally. The Robusta bean, however, tends to be planted and cultivated mostly in Asia and is known to have a more acidic and bitter overall taste. It will come down to your personal taste and the intensity of flavor that you enjoy at the end of the day.

Roast – You might also see coffee referred to by its roast. Roasting is the process of bringing out the flavor and aroma from the beans which start out green in color but which end up various stages of intense brown. Roasting produces the coffee oil from the bean, and as moisture and oil are drawn out of the bean, it goes from a spongy green into the crunchier and dark bean you are more familiar with seeing being ground and made into coffee powder. You can find light roasts, medium ones, Medium Dark roasts and the most intense being a Dark Roast. A medium roast is associated with an American coffee whereas a dark roast is typified by a French or Italian blend.; They all have their own unique taste and texture, so its entirely a case of personal preference as to the flavor you prefer.

Best Medium Roast: Kicking Horse Coffee Smart Ass Blend

Kicking Horse makes six ground coffee varieties, including another medium roast that falls slightly on the darker side, but the Smart Ass blend strikes a terrific balance of flavor. The aroma is sweet and fruity, but as soon as you take a sip, you’ll also find rich undercurrents of milk chocolate. Though slightly more expensive than some of its grocery-store competitors, this is a great option for the coffee drinker tired of making the same run-of-the-mill medium roast every day. All Kicking Horse Coffee is organic and fair trade, but keep in mind that the ground coffee is only available in one size: 10 ounces.

Roast: Medium |;Size:;10 ounce or 2.2 pounds |;Available In: Whole bean and ground |;Origin: Africa, Central America, and South America

Best Variety: New England Coffee

New England Coffee has a blend for everyone. There are traditional varieties like Italian Roast and Colombian Supremo. There are decaf options, K-Cups, and a list of flavored coffees. You can find everything from the dessert-like to the outlandish .

The company has been around for over 100 years, and it’s refreshingly affordable. Depending on the blend, a 12-ounce bag of ground coffee can cost as little as $5.

The definition of single-origin coffee varies. In some cases, it denotes coffee sourced from a single farm. In others, the coffee beans can come from multiple farms within the same region or country. Either way, the goal is the same: to retain the wonderful flavors specific to certain parts of the world, rather than mixing flavors with a blend from different areas. As a result, single-origin coffee tends to have a stronger, more concentrated taste and come from a more ethical means of production.

An unbeatable place to go for single origin is Red Bay Coffee. Founded in 2014, the Bay Area-roaster sells eight signature varieties, six of which are single origin.

History Of The Production Of Italian Ground Coffee

The Best Coffee in the World

In Italy, just like in other countries, the introduction of coffee was initially opposed by some members of the church. Indeed, some fanatical Christians urged Pope Clement VIII to ban the devils drink, but the Pope tasted and liked the new beverage so he welcomed its use. Thanks to the Popes blessing, coffee quickly became a very popular drink.

Coffee is mainly grown in tropical areas. Among the several kinds of Italian ground coffee, Arabica is the most common, and precisely accounts for three-quarters of the global coffee production.

Espresso coffee has very Italian origins, both as regards the espresso makers and for the production methods. The machines and techniques that nowadays are so common in Italy are the result of the improvement of a prototype that was introduced to the Paris World Expo in 1855.

Blue Bottle Guatemala Huehuetenango Finca La Esperanza

Blue Bottle is one of the biggest names in third-wave coffee. They launched in the early 2000s in Oakland, California, and made a name for themselves with their coffee and stylish cafes. Since then, they’ve seen significant growth with cafes opening all over the US, as well as international expansions. This level of expansion can often lead to a decline in quality control due to shifting priorities away from craftsmanship toward mass production, so I was curious to see if they were able to maintain the quality that I was so impressed by when I had my first cup of pour-over coffee from Blue Bottle in 2010.;;

Origin: Guatemala

Varietal: Unknown

Roast: Medium

Tasting notes: Guatemala is one of the most popular origins among coffee fanatics because the region is known for producing sweet, chocolatey coffee with low acidity. Guatemalan coffees usually have a broad appeal to coffee lovers, so a quality Guatemala can be an important metric of a roaster’s competency.;

Blue Bottle did a great job of showcasing the strength of the region with the Guatemala Huehuetenango Finca La Esperanza. This one is chocolate-forward with a hint of vanilla, and it’s very balanced. It’s a very easy cup to drink, very enjoyable, and perfect for any occasion. Rest assured, Blue Bottle is still roasting delicious coffee despite its massive growth.

While coffee houses existed and were somewhat popular in the New World from the mid 17th Century, it wasnt until the Boston Tea Party of 1773 that coffee truly made its mark. Clearly, the natives love it- its been the best-selling ground coffee in the US since the 1990s. Well, were sold.

With their no-fuss approach and just downright American style, weve concurred with the masses and rated Folgers as the best coffee brand in the USA.

What Is The Best Tasting Coffee

Top 10 Best Coffee Brands in India (2020): Brew it Hot ...

The simple answer is: there isn’t one.

Taste is a very, very individual experience. It’s affected by:

  • your genetics, which impact how your brain perceives certain tastes
  • upbringing, which conditions you to prefer certain flavors over others
  • taste receptors, which can be altered by medication and diet
  • tasting training, which can teach you to better identify flavors
  • life experiences, which can have negative or positive memories associated with a flavor
  • foods you’ve eaten recently, which can also alter your taste receptors
  • mood and stress levels, which alter how your brain perceives flavors

That’s why when someone says “coffee X is the best”, what they really mean is “coffee X is the best to my specific tastes”, and this isn’t useful for you.

We recommend you don’t listen to coffee “connoisseurs”, and instead, simply try different coffees.

The best tasting coffee for you is one that you discover for yourself. Avoid sticking with specific brands, which hide the coffee origin from you. We’ve listed some of the best coffees in the world below for you to look into.

Note: Which of these coffees you should buy isn’t as important as whether what you’re purchasing is fresh roasted – coffee is at it’s peak flavor within days of roasting, while many bags of coffee sit on store shelves in Starbucks and Amazon for weeks or months before they finally arrive at your door step.

A great cup of inexpensive fresh roasted single origin coffee will always be better than best old, stale blends.

Final Thoughts On Ground Coffee

Just looking at ground coffee is a little vague. Thinking about my own coffee use, I have ground in for when Im chucking it in the drip coffee machine or maybe making a quick espresso before running out the house. For that reason, I need it to be super easy to use.

Coffee in a tin is just that, because its pre-packaged for storage. Plus its easy to just keep a coffee spoon in there.

With that in mind, I would definitely go for the Illy Cassico Espresso, which actually tastes great for way longer than you would expect from pre-ground coffee. Thats probably their patented packing technology at work!

There are loads of really great value blends on this list, which is also probably something most people want from ground coffee. Its a back up for a lot of us, after all. If Im thinking about that, Id invest in a couple bags of New England Coffee and stick them in my freezer, taking maybe half a bag out at a time for a busy week.

Look, some coffee people might judge me for being a-okay with pre-ground beans but sometimes life is less than perfect and we just need our damn coffee!

Hopefully, this list and guide will help you with times like that.
