Can You Make Cold Brew With Regular Coffee

Is Cold Brew Stronger Than Regular Coffee

How to make cold brew coffee without special equipment

While cold brew may not taste stronger than regular coffee, it typically has a higher caffeine content. It is a common misconception that this is because of the longer brewing time. Interestingly, the cold brewing process actually extracts less caffeine than hot water does, but cold brew uses a higher ratio of coffee to water, which is the real cause of the increased caffeine content.

How much more caffeine are we talking? An average 8-ounce cup of coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine, one shot of espresso has about 63 mg of caffeine, and one 8 ounce serving of cold brew has about 200 mg of caffeine. That’s over double! This is one of the reasons why so many people love cold brew it gives you a serious buzz.

Can You Make Cold Brew With Raw Coffee Beans

You can try it, but you will end up with a mug full of nothingness regardless of your brewing method or technique or the temperature of the water. A raw coffee bean that has not gone through the roasting process has no to little flavor. All the oils and coffee compounds that we love are locked deep in the bean and need some roasting to bring them out.

Do You Add Milk And Creamer To Cold Brew

This goes back to personal preferences again. The flavors are already there when you finish cold brewing a coffee, so you dont necessarily need to add anything. However, if you love a sweeter, milkier coffee, then its fine to add as much milk or cream as you like.

However, you should consider trying cold brew without milk or creamer first to see if its necessary to add in those flavors. There are also a variety of cold brew recipes out there that can enhance flavors, such as pumpkin latte cold brews or cinnamon swirl.

  • Add 3 more cups of water
  • Add 6 more ounces of medium to coarse grounds.
  • Submerge the floating grounds without stirring.
  • Cover the brewing container and allow the coffee to steep in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours. Or if you dont have space in the fridge you can leave it on the counter for between 14-18 hours.
  • When its ready, hold the brewing container above the glass pitcher and remove the rubber stopper. You can set the brewing container on top of the glass decanter and allow it to drain.

Grinding The Beans Too Fine

Some methods of brewing, like pour-over, call for finely ground beans. But in cold brew, because youre steeping them for upwards of 12 hours, you should grind the beans coarsely. Coffee that is too finely ground will over-extract, explains Phillips. Over-extracted coffee is bitter coffee, which no one wants .

Make cold brew, dilute it by half, add cream, enjoy.

Fine Grind Cold Brew Recipe

A cold brew recipe is all about the ratio of coffee to water. You can use it anywhere from 1:12 to 1:16. The higher the ratio, the stronger your brew will be.

There are many ways to make cold brew coffee with a fine grind setting, but they all rely on one simple principle time. The longer you let it steep, the more flavorful and less acidic your coffee will be.

Here is my favorite way of doing it:

  • Start with a ratio of 1:12 coffee to water then let it sit overnight. For me, that is 30g of coffee to 420g of water.
  • Then I usually split the coffee into two jars one for 8 hours and another one for 16.
  • When youre done steeping, use a paper coffee filter to get all the grounds out of your brew.

The great thing about this recipe is that you can choose which one better suits your taste or if you like both you can alternate between the two.

The resulting coffee is very strong and tastes less acidic than hot-brewed, but it also has a bitter aftertaste. You can reduce it by adding a little bit of water and sugar. If you want to make it sweeter without reducing the flavor, use brown or demerara sugar.

Cold-brew coffee goes well with milk, but the flavor is lost in it. You can add a bit of vanilla or molasses to make it shine.

Why Is Cold Brew Less Acidic

Fact: Cold brew coffee is much gentler on your stomach than regular hot coffee.

Studies have proven that cold brew coffee is up to 65% less acidic than a regular cup of joe.

Many people actually avoid a daily cup of coffee because of the acidity and digestion problems. Perhaps they have stomach issues, like an ulcer. While there are less acidic coffee products on the market, they dont really taste as good as a real organic, fair-traded cup of joe. If you are wondering whether drinking coffee is healthy, check out our post.

Cold brewing coffee actually works to reduce the acidity without taking away from the flavor. In fact, brewing coffee in cold water enhances the flavor. Since hot water isnt used to brew cold coffee, the natural oils in the beans that create more acidity cant permeate into the mixture.

Whats The Difference Between Cold Brew & Iced Coffee

How to Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home

If you want to swipe through the differences at a glance, check out this web story I put together.

To put it simply: iced coffee is any coffee served over ice.

No matter which brewing method was used initially, as long as it is served over ice, its considered iced coffee.

In other words, iced coffee = any coffee served cold.

The difference lays in the actual brewing method. Iced coffee starts out as hot coffee , and cold brew is actually brewed cold, as the name implies.

To me, the most important difference between ice coffee and cold brew is in the flavor.

When compared directly, cold brew coffee will have very little acidity and bitterness, and the flavor is smoother and a bit sweeter.

When you brew hot coffee, the hot water extracts the oils from the coffee beans, which is where the acidity comes from. Since cold brew is brewed without any hot water, those oils arent extracted, and the result is very low in acidity.

If you find that the acidity of hot coffee bothers your stomach, switching to a cold brew may help significantly!

Is Cold Brew And Iced Coffee The Same

Coffee is brewed, cooled, and then poured over ice before being served in iced coffee cups. People place standard coffee in their fridge. The entire process is relatively simple, so you can drink the perfect cool drink in the heat of summer. In contrast, cold brew, on the other hand, is created without the use of heat.

How Long Should I Brew Cold Brew Coffee

It may depend on where youre steeping your cold brew. But its usually best to go more than 12 hours regardless of if youre steeping on the counter or in the fridge. That way the flavors have a chance to develop.

  • On the counter: According to the experts over at Stumptown Coffee Roasters if youre steeping at room temperature it might be best to go with between 14-18 hours. If you leave it steeping longer it could take on some unpleasant flavor notes. When youre done its best to put it in the fridge as soon as possible.
  • In the fridge: If youre steeping in the fridge you can leave it a little longer, around 20-24 hours.

With that being said its fun to experiment because different beans will have different flavor notes, and different roasts will also affect the flavor of your cold brew.

You may find that steeping your coffee a little longer will produce a better cold brew. Its always good to experiment, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Cold Brew Coffee Recipe Tips

  • Fresh is best. Whether youre making hot coffee or cold brew, freshly ground beans will always yield the best flavor. Why? Grinding coffee beans releases their oils. These oils are what add complexity and depth to a cup of coffee. After you grind coffee beans, these oils begin to dry out. As a result, you want to use coffee beans right after you grind them, when their oils have just been released and their flavor is fresh.
  • Grind the coffee beans coarsely. That way, theyll be easier to strain out of the coffee.
  • Adjust the ratios to taste. One of the reasons I love making cold brew at home is that its easy to adjust each cup of coffee to taste. If Ive made a particularly strong batch of cold brew, I dilute each glass with more milk or water. If its less strong, I just add a splash. Dont hesitate to add more coffee, water, or milk to create a flavor and intensity you love.

Cold brews should not be brewed with fine ground coffee due to their acidity, which can overextract and produce bitter results. Fact: Cold brew coffee is sweeter yet doesnt require as much sugar as hot coffee.

If you take your coffee with lots of creamer and sugar, then you already know how the bitter taste of coffee is a huge turn-off. That goes away when brewing your coffee cold. You can even cold brew your coffee and pour a cup without ever adding sugar.

The consistency is also a bit more like chocolate milk than a hot cup of coffee. This is mainly because the coffee thickens as it soaks in cold water, resulting in a very smooth cup of caffeinated yumminess.

Cold Brew Vs Iced Coffee: Whats the Difference Anyway?

Courtesy of Walmart

The centuries-old coffee brand has established itself as a solid, widely available option. Their decaf coffee beans are particularly enticing to those who dont partake in caffeine. To make their decaf beans, Lavazza follows an all-natural method where green coffee is treated with steam and the caffeine is removed using carbon dioxide. The CO2 process retains the integrity of the bean while removing any traces of caffeine.

The coffee is fully roasted using hot air to produce a roast that sips like your standard caffeinated cup balanced and fuller in body.

Ratio For Cold Brew Concentrate

More often than not, you’ll find that store-bought cold brew is actually a concentrate. This means that you’ll need to dilute it with water before drinking or you’ll have a very strong, highly caffeinated cup of coffee. We recommend this method when you’re using a smaller container, like a mason jar or French press . For a concentrate, you’ll use a 2:1 ratio of water to coffee for example 2 cups of cold water to 1 cup of coffee.
