Q& a On Sugary Beverages By Lisa Goldberg Keithley Md

Q: Kids love sweet drinks. Whats wrong with that?

A: Many childrens drinks are loaded with added sugar and have little nutritional value. According to the CDC, sugary beverages are a main factor in the rise of childhood obesity. And kids who consume a lot of sweet drinks may not be getting enough vitamins, calcium and other nutrients.

Q: How much sugar should kids get each day?

A: Most kids consume too much sugar. The American Heart Association recommends they get no more than 3 teaspoons of sugar per day, but kids ages 4-8 typically consume 21 teaspoons per day.

Q: Do some childrens drinks have too much sugar?

A: There are definitely some popular drinks you should avoid giving to your kids. They are low in nutrients and are loaded with sugar. Here are a few of them:

  • Hi-C®: This longtime favorite is low in fruit juice just 10% but is high in added sugar. One 6.75-ounce carton has 6 teaspoons of sugar. Thats more sugar per ounce than in a regular Coke.
  • Hawaiian Punch®: Not much juice in this drink only 5% but 8 ounces contain 4 teaspoons of sugar.
  • SunnyD®: It may look like orange juice, but its really only 5% juice. A 6.75-ounce bottle has almost 3 teaspoons of sugar.
  • Capri Sun®: One little 6-ounce pouch has a big 4 teaspoons of added sugar.
  • Sodas: A 12-ounce can of regular Coke® contains almost 10 teaspoons of sugar. Thats more than three times the recommended daily allowance of sugar in just one drink!

Why Dogs Should Not Drink Capri Sun

Dogs should not drink Capri Sun due to the high sugar content which occurs both through the fruit juice content and the additional refined sugar that is added. Equally, Capri Sun that contains citric acid can cause stomach issues, especially in sensitive dogs.

On the face of it, if we take a look at the ingredients of the original orange flavor Capri Sun, it looks pretty good:

Spring Water, Fruit Juices from Concentrate 12% , Sugar, Antioxidant , Natural Orange Flavourings

But that would not be a fair analysis we need to look at other flavors too.

Here is the ingredient list for Capri Sun Tropical Punch:

Filtered Water, Organic White Grape Juice Concentrate, Organic Apple Juice Concentrate, Organic Orange Juice Concentrate, Organic Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor

And again for the Apple flavor:

Filtered Water, Organic Apple Juice From Concentrate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor

Three of the most popular flavors, and those you likely have too.

Now, when we take a look at the ingredient list we can see why this is not a suitable drink.

What Happened To Yuban Coffee

Yuban was a great brand that was launched in 1963 as a single-origin coffee, and was eventually sold to Kraft Foods, who turned it into a private label brand. While they were still popular in the 60s and 70s, the quality was never quite the same after Kraft took over, and they began to make more and more cut corners to save money. As the quality of the Yuban coffee decreased, consumers stopped buying it and turned to other brands. Kraft eventually stopped distributing Yuban in 2007. Critics attribute the decline of the once great Yuban brand to the takeover by Kraft. It would be interesting to learn more about the rise and fall of Yuban. What happened to Yuban coffee? How was the brand affected by the takeover by Kraft?.

How Many Capri Suns Can You Drink A Day

Kool-Aid Jammers vs Capri Sun Fruit Punch Juice Pouches FoodFights Food & Soft Drink Beverage Review

Capri Sun ingredients are typical ingredients found in an average juice, such as concentrated juice, water, and sugar.

Additionally, Capri Sun comes also with an organic version.

The main concern is the sugar content.

In order to know how much Capri Sun you can drink a day, it is necessary to understand how much sugar is too much and what limits you should keep in mind regarding sugar.

Standing to the American Heart Association, a person should not exceed six teaspoons of sugar per day, or 24 grams of sugar for a woman, and a maximum of 9 teaspoons or 36 grams of sugar for a man. Since

A Capri Sun pouch contains 13 grams of sugar.

If you follow the daily recommended limits, you should not drink more than 2 or 3 Capri Suns per day, providing you are not consuming any other food or drink containing sugar.

Fungus In Capri Sun Yes But So What

Yes, scientists found five types of fungus in Capri Sun beverages after consumers reported finding mats of mold in the popular kids’ drinks. But they’re mostly harmless.

May 2, 2013

Five types of fungus have been identified in the popular kids’ juice drink Capri Sun, researchers say.

The study was spurred by reports of consumers finding mold mats of fungus consisting of millions of cells in the drink.

While the findings have an “ick” factor, the fungi probably aren’t harmful to most people, said study researcher Kathleen Dannelly, associate professor microbiology at Indiana State University. Fungi are all around us in the soil, air, and even on our skin and inside our digestive tract but they are generally kept in check by our immune systems.

“Probably, those of us with healthy immune systems, we could even eat that, and that wouldnt be a problem,” Dannelly said, referring to the fungal mats in Capri Sun.

However, for people with compromised immune systems, such as those with AIDS, leukemia or cystic fibrosis, fungus exposure may be a health concern, Dannelly said.

I Think Capri Sun Has Caffeine

If you Google “capri sun addiction” a lot of people report binging on it & I had the same experience. Capri sun states they don’t contain caffeine but I suspect they add something fishy/addictive, that isn’t mentioned anywhere. It’s really weird.

… Sugar. The addictive part is the sugar

They arent adding anything to Capri suns that they arent disclosing. Its the sugar and nostalgic flavor and how little there actually is in a 6oz pouch.

It just has a great taste and is a bit of a tease. One bag is never enough.

legally they are required to put all ingredients on the label. They could be hiding the fact that caffeine is in it but I doubt that. It would be a major scandal for a company marketing a product to children to lie about using something that we know for a fact to be addictive.

Mostly like it’s either the sugar or a ritual association, rituals are very powerful and are a major factor in addiction.

They’ve Had Some Strange Responses

You know those “very rare” occurrences of mold? Well, they don’t seem so rare given that they’ve kept happening over the years, and the most recent response from the company is a bit of a head scratcher.

In September 2018, an irate dad posted to , saying, “So tonight after dinner our oldest asked for some ‘juice’ … I grabbed one out of the refrigerator and notice something odd about it… it seems low in content, I take a closer look at the packaging and don’t notice a hole or anything. So I shake it up some, only to find an unknown substance floating around in the package.”

And what did Kraft have to say this time? The company told Today in a statement that this was an “isolated case” , and even doubled down, saying, “… We understand it’s unpleasant, but the mold is naturally-occurring, just like if you left an apple on your counter for too long and mold begins to grow.”

But here’s the thing: We can all see that the apple is moldy before we bite into it. So we don’t bite into it. But even with the clear bottoms, consumers are apparently still drinking moldy Capri Sun without thorough inspection, because most of us just don’t assume that our juice is going to be full of slime and goo. Comparing your packaged beverage to a moldy apple seems like an odd tactic, no?

What Should Dogs Drinkinstead

Your dog should drink nothing but plain, fresh water the majority of the time. This is the best thing to keep your dog hydrated and healthy.

Besides, a dogs sense of taste is around 1/6th as powerful as in us humans they only have 1700 taste buds compared to our 9000.

So they would not get the same kind of level of intensity of taste, like say, we would.

They essentially would not get to enjoy the flavors of drinking Capri Sun, as we do.

And whats even more interesting is that dogs also have special taste buds geared specifically for water!

These taste buds are situated at the tip of the tongue, hence why dogs lap water.

And it is believed they have evolved these taste buds to keep them hydrated, particularly after eating foods that may have the opposing effect.

So why would we ever need to venture away from this fundamental element?

And this means the likes of Capri Sun, Juice, Tea, Coffee, Soda should never be offered.

Besides, there are other things in them that can be problematic too, like caffeine.

Kombucha, flavored water are not really that suitable either.

In reality, the only thing a dog should drink is water.

And if you did want to offer something else, ensure it was specifically designed for dogs and serves a purpose.

For instance, there is a product called K9 Powder which can be particularly helpful for active dogs:

What Are The Healthiest And Unhealthiest Juice Boxes

DO NOT DRINK CAPRI SUN!!!

Though this list isnt exhaustive, it is representative of some of the most popular options available. Hi-C is the unhealthiest juice box we encountered, and Capri Sun isnt far behind, though at least they dont have corn syrup in their juices.

Determining the healthiest will be a bit of a personal preference but R.W. Knudsons Sensible Sippers have the lowest sugar content we saw. Honest Kids and Juicy Juice Splashers Organic both balance a relatively low natural sugar content with high vitamin C. Apple and Eve Fruitables, meanwhile, has more sugar but also boasts veggies. If these juice-box choices have you considering other drink options, there are plenty of healthy smoothie recipes that taste great.

The Move To Clear Bottoms

So what’s a company to do in the face of all these mold claims? Use it to their advantage, that’s what.

In response to each instance of a consumer finding “something” in their Capri Sun, Kraft Foods routinely provided fairly blasé statements along the lines of: “Since our Capri Sun products are made without preservatives a fact many moms like if there’s even a small hole in a pouch and air gets into it, mold similar to common bread mold can form. This is why we advise on the side of the box to discard any leaking pouches.” The mold issue was also typically cited as “very rare” by the company.

Their next move? To capitalize on the fact that their product is preservative free. Kraft realized that 70 percent of their customers were unaware the drink contained no artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors, and like it or not, the mold issue allowed them to bring that fact front and center. So in 2014, they launched a new pouch with a clear bottom to let moms “see the goodness before it’s gulped.” Or, you know, spot the mold before it’s gulped…

Yes, the new transparent pouch presented an opportunity for consumers to see inside, but it also presented an opportunity for the company to add 2 million customers to its franchise not exactly a selfless act on Kraft’s part.
