What Is A Latte

The term latte is a shortened version of the original Italian name Caffè Latte meaning coffee & milk. A latte contains at least one shot of espresso, mixed with steamed milk and with a milk foam topper.

The drink called was first described to English speaking audiences by William Dean Howells in 1867. However if we could go back in time and compare it to the modern version were familiar with, wed probably find it to be quite different. At that point in history, there were no milk frothing or espresso machines, so the drink resembled the French Cafe au Lait with warm milk and no foam.

The modern version of the drink that were familiar with is believed to have been invented nearly 100 years later. Whilst the exact circumstances are somewhat hazy, the most commonly accepted story is that it was invented and introduced to US consumers by Lino Meiorin- owner of the Caffe Mediterraneum in Berkeley. From the 1980s onwards foam art started to be added by Baristas in Seattle and began to explode in popularity with the advent of Starbucks.

When you step into your local coffee shop, there is never a shortage of delicious espresso and milk-based drinks to choose from!

Most beverages are a combination of milk and espresso plus add-ins like sweeteners, foams, and flavorings.

But have you ever wondered how much milk is in your favorite drink? And does the amount of milk in an espresso-based drink fundamentally change what it is called and how it tastes?

As any barista can tell you, the amount of milk in your drink absolutely impacts what its called and how it tastes.

You can get really strong espresso flavored drinks like macchiatos or straight shots or you can go for creamier, milkier options like cappuccinos or lattes. But how much milk is in these drinks and why does it really matter?

So, how much milk is in a latte? Typically, a latte is going to be 1 part espresso to 3 parts or more of milk, so the exact amount will depend on the size of latte you order and where its from. For example, a grande latte will typically have 2 shots of espresso of 1 ounce each and about 8-14 ounces of milk.

Read on to discover more about how much milk is in a latte, the differences between lattes, macchiatos, mochas, cappuccinos, and other hot drinks, and how to make a delicious latte right at home.

How Much Milk Goes In A Double Shot Latte

When it comes to preparing a double shot latte at home, you can go one of two ways. You can retain the 1:5 ratio of coffee to milk, serving two shots of espresso and 8-10 oz of steamed milk. Youll notice, of course, that this will mean you need to serve the drink in a larger cup.

I think that serving more milk in a bigger cup dilutes the taste of the espresso. However this is the ideal choice if you prefer your drink to have a less strong taste of coffee.

If you prefer a more balanced brew, my recommended approach is to keep the 8 oz cup and tweak the ratio.

Prepare a double shot latte with 2 oz of espresso and 4-5 oz of steamed milk. This gives the drink a much more satisfying balance of milk and coffee.

    Seasonal Lattes At Starbucks

    Almond Milk Latte
    • Caramel Brûlée: Brulee means burnt, but I prefer to describe the flavor of this drink as smoky or toasty. Cream, sweet, and decadent, this drink is super popular. Topped with whipped cream and bits of candy, Caramel brulee lattes are available starting in November.
    • Gingerbread: Some say this drink tastes like a gingerbread cookie. Simply gingerbread syrup blended with espresso and milk, Gingerbread lattes appear around October or November. It comes with spiced whipped cream and a molasses drizzle although some customers ask for no drizzle.
    • Eggnog: Made with espresso, eggnog, and 2% milk, this is the only seasonal latte that is topped with foam instead of whipped creamalong with a dash of nutmeg.
    • Pumpkin Spice: The syrup for this flavored latte is more like a thick sauce, so this drink is creamier than a standard latte. Frequently requested when it is not in season, pumpkin spice lattes comes with whipped cream and a special powder on top.

And that’s all about Starbucks lattes! I’m a little amazed I could limit myself to only one terrible pun. Enjoy your next latte!

There Are Large Bubbles That Wont Tap Out When Im Done

This is typically caused by one of two reasons . Either youre introducing air into thepitcher after the milk is too warm to incorporate it entirely OR your final steam temperature is too hot. Youcould:

Finish introducing air earlier in your steaming process by submerging the steam tip earlier

    Reduce your end temperature

Remember that different steaming set-ups will steam differently

There is a broad variety of ways that machines produce and dispense steam for milk, and those differences candrastically affect the steam power, steam-jet direction, and required time for a pitcher of milk. Getting familiar withthe way your machine works can help guide you toward quality drinks in no time.

Low steam pressure machines will take a long time to steam relative to other set-ups. Expect 3060 secondsinvested to get up to temperature, which gives you plenty of time to slowly add small sips of air to reach your desiredtexture. However, this extra time can also make it easy to over-stretch your milk, so learning that balance as well ashow to visually judge how much youve aerated your milk will be important. The low pressure will also make it difficultto create motion in your pitcher, so finding the sweet spot to create a whirlpool motion while steaming may be trying, but important nonetheless.

    Happy steaming, yall.

Why Fall In Love With The Latte

However, one great factor about lattes is that they are highly customizable. They can be easily decorated with flavorings such as mocha, caramel, vanilla, or other syrups, as well as different milk types like soy, almond, coconut, or oat. Furthermore, you can also replace the coffee entirely by supplementing tea instead! Some of the more popular tea supplements include masala chai, matcha, rooibos, and more.

The great thing about the latte is that its a great espresso beverage for those who dont want anything super strong. Though theres espresso, which is very robust and strong in caffeine content, the proportion of milk will heavily dilute the severity of the caffeine in the coffee.
