How Long Does It Take To Make Cold Brew Coffee
Learning how to make cold brew iced coffee is incredibly simple, and quick in the beginning. It will only take a few moments to mix together your water and coffee into a container. The longest part of the process will be steeping it.
It can take anywhere from twelve to twenty four hours to fully steep your cold brew. Of course, this will depend on how strong you want it to be.
When you first start to learn how to make cold brew coffee in a mason jar, it can be tempting to take it out early. However, it is well worth the wait to keep it in the refrigerator and let it steep until it is at your desired potency.
How Do You Make Cold Brew Coffee
Now to really dive into how to make cold brew coffee at home. The process is pretty simple to do, which is great as it means less work and more enjoyment. Following is how to make cold brew coffee in a mason jar.
Following is a simple cold brew iced coffee recipe. Note that iced coffee is typically different than cold brew as it uses a hot brew. However, cold brew is often also enjoyed with ice to keep it chilled for your enjoyment.
To start making your own cold brew, you will need to begin with your favorite roast. Be sure to heavily ground it before use so it does not cloud the water during the process.
Then, you will want to find a container to make it in. I recommend making it in a quart sized mason jar or 2 quart mason jar, but you can find all sorts of pitchers and mason jar accessories on Amazon.
I really like this cold brew coffee pitcher. I had one similar to this, and it’s easier to use since you don’t need to strain out the coffee grounds.
Unfortunately, mine cracked a broke. Now I’m back to making cold brew coffee in a mason jar.
Gently stir the grounds and water together and then cover the container with a plastic wrap. Let it sit for twelve to twenty four hours. Open it up and taste it every few hours until it is as sweet as you prefer it. Once it is to your liking, dump the grounds.
You can also buy a 2 quart mason jar and filter set. I already had a 2 quart jar, but this is a great deal.
The General Method Of Brewing Iced Coffee
Usually, for every one cup of water, you should ideally add at least 1 ounce of coarse ground coffee to make cold brew or iced coffee at home. You must know that the steeping time for the coffee grounds may go up to 24 hours when you make cold brew. Starbucks is known to steep its cold brew for 20 hours, which may be why the coffeeflavor is so well concentrated.
Brewing it for longer will make the taste stronger and more bitter, but you can just dilute the cold brew with some more water if the iced coffee is too bitter for you.
Straining the cold brew coffee will need more than just a sieve or a French press. Here, you can filter the coffee using different tools like cheesecloth, coffee filters, or even handkerchiefs. Using a sieve or French Press will leave behind some coffee grounds in the cold brew!

Can You Pour Hot Coffee Over Ice To Make Iced Coffee
You can absolutely make iced coffee by pouring hot coffee over ice cubes. This is one of those instant methods that will have your drink ready in practically no time at all . Youll just need lots of extra ice.
Extra Instant Iced Coffee
If you have no time to spare, even for your drink to chill, theres an even quicker method to get your drink ready. Make a doubly strong hot brew, pour it in a glass, and stir in a load of ice. The ice will melt and cool down your coffee without diluting it too much. Keep adding ice until the cubes stop melting. At this point, your iced coffee is ready to drink.
The Key To Great Japanese
The key to making great Japanese-style iced coffee is to get your ratios right. Because you’re brewing onto ice, which is going to melt and dilute your brew, you need to account for that in your measurements by brewing a double-strength batch of coffee and chilling it with just enough ice to achieve your desired final brew strength.
So, for example, in this recipe we make 16 fluid ounces of brewed iced coffee by brewing a double strength batch using one ounce of ground coffee and eight ounces of hot water. This is brewed directly onto an additional eight ounces of ice, which will melt to dilute the coffee properly.
The easiest way to do this is with a scale, though with a little tinkering you certainly could figure out a scoops-to-hot-water-to-number-of-ice-cubes recipe that works at your house. A scale, though, is by far the easiest way to do it, and so it’s how the recipe is written here.
- 1 ounce medium-coarse ground coffee
- 8 ounces near-boiling water

How To Make Cold Brew Iced Coffee
Heres a great video that will show you how to make cold brew coffee with a mason jar.
As you saw in the video, its pretty easy to make cold brew iced coffee at home. All you really need is a glass jar/container with a lid , coffee grounds, filtered water, around 12 to 24 hours, and ice.
Heres an easy cold brew coffee recipe to get you started. As youll notice the cold brew method makes a concentrated coffee, so its often diluted before drinking.
French Press Coffee Maker
You could also use a french press like I do. I just use the above recipe in my french press and let it brew in the fridge with plastic wrap over the top. Once its ready I plunge the grounds and pour off the coffee, its that easy.
This one is made with double glass which means its strong and thermal shock resistant.

How To Make Iced Coffee With A Drip Coffee Machine
Its super easy to make iced coffee at home with your drip coffee machine. Heres how:
Drip Coffee Machine Iced Coffee Recipe:
- Add ice to your carafe
- Brew your coffee as usual this may seem strong, but if youre not using coffee ice-cubes your coffee will be diluted by the ice so youll want to make it a little stronger than normal
- Once your coffee is brewed pour over ice, if you had ice in the carafe its probably cool enough at this point that you wont need to worry about thermal shock
- Add your favorite creamer/milk and sweeten
Helpful gear: The Ninja Coffee Bar has an Over Ice setting that measures the amount of coffee needed accounting for the ice in your mug which makes for a more flavorful iced coffee.
It also brews the coffee differently on that setting so that the hot coffee does not all come out in one steady stream, its released a little at a time so it doesnt melt the ice to the same extent as a traditional drip brew maker.
We received one as a review copy and I love that setting for a quick iced coffee. Its got different size options as well, so if Im heading out the door with a travel mug, I dont need to make a whole pot I choose that size setting and it makes just enough.
Key Steps To Better Cold Brew At Home
- Get the grind right. Cold brew requires a specific grind. A larger grind something closer to the coarseness of raw sugar keeps the brew from getting bitter overnight. If youve got a small home grinder, its best to grind the beans in batches.
- Use a higher ratio of coffee to water. This recipe uses a ratio of 8 ounces of ground coffee to 8 cups of water which is 1 ounce of coffee per cup making it easier to scale this recipe up or down. Drip coffee uses about 1/2 ounce of coffee per cup.
- Strain slowly. The Toddy System that Starbucks uses to brew and strain their coffee relies on gravity to gently remove the cold brew from the grounds. To replicate that at home, youll need to strain the cold brew gently through cheesecloth and a strainer. Avoid pressing or squeezing the coffee grounds, as that extracts bitter flavors. Work in batches to strain as gently as possible. You might be asking yourself, Cant I just strain the coffee with a coffee filter? You could, but it slows the straining process and occasionally the paper filters tear, creating more of a mess than anyone should have to deal with before coffee. My favorite tool for straining my cold brew is actually a nut milk bag.

How To Make Flash Brewed Iced Coffee
Brewing this style of iced coffee involves brewing pour over coffee and allowing the draining liquid to fall directly onto ice. Theres no middle period between the brewing and the icingboth steps are part of the same process.
For the most part, to make this happen, all you have to do is add some ice cubes into your normal carafe or glass and cut your brewing water volume by 30%. Then you brew like normal. Some specific recipes suggest cutting your water more to account for the melting ice, but 30% is a safe estimate without getting too technical.
Now lets see why this is very different from just pouring hot coffee over ice.
Is Iced Coffee Cold Brew Coffee
No, iced coffee isnt cold brew coffee, but I see where youre coming from.
The whole reason its not, is because cold brew starts out cold, while iced coffee starts out hot.
Also, theres a big difference in flavor between hot coffee thats been cooled, and cold brew coffee.
Cold brew is a bit more delicate and doesnt usually go well with a lot of ice, even if its cold.

Iced Coffee Method: Aeropress Coffee Made With Room
- Time: 2 minutes
- Overall rating: 3/10
About this method: The people who love the Aeropress really love it . Aeropress is a cylindrical device that on one end has a filter and basket for coffee. Water goes into the vessel and then another piece plunges the water through the filter directly into the cup. For hot coffee, you use hot water for iced coffee, you start with room-temperature water. Once you pour water into the vessel, stir the coffee grounds and water for 1 minute, then plunge the contents into the cup. Add enough room-temp or ice-cold water to make 1 cup of coffee.
Results: While I appreciate how fast you can have your hand on a cup of iced coffee, this is a very lightly brewed coffee. The color was so light similar to iced tea. It was actually the lightest of all the brews. What did take me by surprise was that despite how light the brew was, the coffee itself had some really nice flavors come through.
My takeaway: This is a great method for the people who prefer a lighter, less intense cup of coffee. I felt that the overall flavor was really nice, but would have liked to let the coffee grounds steep a little longer to get more or, alternatively, to start this as a warm cup that I cooled down. This also is not a cold brew for a person who wants to add their favorite milk or alt milk. I found that the coffee flavor was muted enough as is.
How Do You Make Iced Coffee
Youll need a tall glass and a spoon long enough to reach the bottom of that glass.
Fill that glass full to the rim with ice. If you really want to get serious about your iced coffee, you can make ice cubes out of coffee too. Then you wont get that watered-down effect. And if youre into that flavored sort of coffee then go for it.
Pour room temperature coffee into the glass.
Fill it almost to the top.
Pour in the white stuff. Heres where you get to make a big decision. Do you want to go all out and make this a decadent treat? If so, then add cream or half & half. If you want to go a little lighter, use whole milk or fat-free half & half. And lighter still, use nonfat milk.
Take a moment to watch the swirls sink to the bottom and mix in with the coffee. Its a magical moment. ð
Add a couple spoonfuls of sugar or whatever sort of sweetener you usually add to your coffee. In the recipe notes below, I share how to make sugary simple syrup in case you prefer to use that instead of granulated white sugar.
Stir it all up!
Add a purple straw. If youre a straw person, that is. And drink up!

Choose The Right Coffee
As I said earlier, our body doesnt perceive sweetness as well at low temperatures as it does at higher temperatures.
This means that some types of coffee will taste great hot but be overly edgy & bitter when chilled.
Typically, a light or medium roast coffee with lots of natural sweetness will give best results at lower temperature. In contrast, a dark roast coffee will often need a lot more sweetening to prevent it tasting smoky & bitter at lower temperatures.
In terms of specific varieties, I suggest looking for natural or honey processed single origin coffees or blends. The pleasing chocolaty, fruity sweetness of these varieties really seems to shine when served cold.
Some roasters even have specific blends designed to taste best when served cold
Of course, in the end theres no hard & fast rules. If youre brewing an iced filter coffee, the delicate acidity of a washed coffee can also be really tasty.
How Long To Steep Cold Brew Coffee
Once your coffee and water are well mixed, let the mixture sit for 12-18 hours to allow the coffee to infuse into the water. The ideal time to steep your cold brew is between 14 and 18 hours. This will give you the best cold brew flavor without the bitterness that could come from steeping too long.
You can either steep your cold brew on your counter at room temperature or in your refrigerator.
