Do You Need A Cold Brew Maker
Technically, you can make cold brew in any container with a lid. A cold brew maker will make this process much simpler, but its not required. If you end up making cold brew without a built-in filter, we recommend setting up a pour-over with a paper filter . Pour the brewed coffee through the filter to remove all of the grounds.
And for an option thats unbelievably easy, try Driftaways cold brew subscription which doesnt require any equipment or cleanup!
Use The Right Amount Of Coffee
The amount of coffee you use in relation to the amount of water you brew with is what determines how strong or weak a cup of coffee will be. The more coffee you use, the stronger the cup, and the less coffee you use, the weaker the cup. So how do you know how much coffee to use? The best way to think about it is as a ratio between the amount of coffee used to the amount of water used. For our House Blend, we use a ratio of about 1:12 to help accentuate its chocolate sweetness and silky body, For our Single Origins, we recommend using a ratio of 1:14, which helps to highlight the more delicate flavors and acidity.
Grind At The Correct Coarseness Setting
Different brewing methods require different grind sizes to make great coffee. But how do you know if youre using the right size? There are two really easy ways to tell: time, and taste. With our pour over recipes, we aim for the coffee to be brewed in about three and a half minutes. If the coffee brews too quickly, it means the grind was too coarse. If it brews too slowly, it means the grind was too fine. Additionally, if a coffee that tastes too acidic and sour it usually means the grind was too coarse, and if it tastes too bitter, it means the grind was too fine. Generally speaking, espresso requires a fine grind, pour-overs and AeroPress require a medium grind, and French Presses require a coarse grind. Adjusting your grind setting to time and taste will bring you one step closer to delicious coffee at home. Check out our Brew Guides to learn more about the grind settings we use in our caffes!

Standards For High Quality Water
Most waters worldwide are too high both in carbonate hardness and in total hardness. Treatment needed, that is!SCA standards for minerals:
- total hardness of 50-175 ppm CaCO3
- carbonate hardness of 40-75 ppm CaCO3
- pH of 6-8
All this is to be studied based on the composition of the water in hand. Also, low brew ratios shift the optimum of total hardness and carbonate hardness towards higher values. There are no exact numbers and ratios to be given!

The Best Coffee To Buy Online
With this kit, you can make cold brew for the week right in the package, take the bean bags out for smaller servings, or brew the bags with hot water for a higher temp drink.
Step Six: Upgrade your brew.
The next level is to change up how you’re brewing. A drip machine is the easiest method, but the brew varies drastically over machines, and you just dont have as much control. A French press makes a bolder coffee, because the grounds are steeped. Pour overs are the most attention-intensive, but they also offer the most control. You can get fancy with the speed and the angle of the pour, which is where next-level coffee pros have fun. Try cold brew, too: Don’t just brew up coffee and throw it in the fridge, says Sands. Think of it like barbecuing: brew it low and slow, in the fridge overnight.
Whats The Best Cold Brew Brewing Time
We recommend letting your cold brew steep for 12 to 18 hours. This is a big range, but keep in mind that its a slow process, so the flavor wont be drastically different at either end of the range. The biggest thing to avoid is brewing for longer than 24 hours, after which your cold brew may be undrinkable and very over-extracted. Try brewing for 12 or 14 hours to start and see what you think! If the flavor isnt strong enough, let your next batch brew for longer.

The One Rule You Need To Understand
Coffee brewing is a matter of science. Fortunately, once you understand one concept, everything becomes a lot easier.
While there are many things that affect a coffees flavour and aroma, nearly all of them converge in a single word: extraction.
According to Lani Kingston in How to Make Coffee: The Science Behind The Bean, coffee is approximately 30% soluble. And this 30% contains all the flavours and aromas that we want to taste in our cup of coffee. The only question is: how much of these do we want to taste?

Coffee brewing is the process by which we extract these compounds. By controlling our brew method, we control the level of extraction. This is important because not all compounds are extracted at the same rate or point in extraction.
Earlier on in the brew, the fruitier and more acidic-tasting compounds are extracted. Then comes sweetness, and finally, the more bitter ones. In other words, if your coffee is tasting too sour , its probably under-extracted. Too bitter, over-extracted. Sweet, balanced, complex, and delicious? Thats brewing perfection. This is the one rule you need to understand when brewing coffee.

Step : Clean Your Coffeemaker Often
Coffee beans have oil, Jazmin told us. If you dont wash your coffee potwell, then the oil is going to stay. The next day youre going to brew more coffee and the oil is going to affect the flavor. Thats why Brew Brew cleans their coffee and espresso machines daily. At home, Jazmin explained, if you dont clean your coffeemaker often, the coffee is going to taste like its burnt because of all the oil thats been left in the pot.
What Makes Great Coffee According To Experts
Pabst and Milos broke it down to its simplest components for me. A brews flavor derives from two primary things: Thereswhere and how the beans are grown and how darkly or lightly its roasted.
When it comes to roasting, Milos takes the view that there is no right or wrong level, it comes down to personal taste. He compared the preference for lighter roasts versus darker ones to liking steak rare versus well-done.
But what about the brewing process itself? With so many methods, surely there were differences in the taste of the final cup that went beyond the bean. There, Pabst and Milos had opinions, but to really find out firsthand, I decided to stage a cage-match style cup-off. I chose five of the most popular home-brewing methods to compete against each other for my own personal single best cup of coffee. Best cup, in this case, being the one that tasted most like I had enjoyed in Italy.

The #1 Tip For Better Coffee It’s All About The Grinder
If you’ve ever had a glass of wine a couple of days after opening the bottle and thought to yourself, “This tastes nothing like I remember,” you’ll understand this tip right off the bat. “Much like wine, coffee beans oxidize due to contact withyou guessed itoxygen,” says Jordan Karcher, founder of Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. “By grinding the coffee, you’re increasing the surface area of the coffee and greatly increasing the rate of oxidation, resulting in muted flavors and subdued aromatics. I recommend waiting until the last possible moment to grind your coffee before beginning the brewing process.”
That means you’ll always want to buy whole beans and invest in a home coffee grinder so that you can grind your freshly roasted beans right before making your cup of coffee. For French press coffee, you’ll want a coarser grind than with other types of at-home coffee.
Already grinding beans at home? Remember that coffee grinders wear out over time, which can impact the taste of the coffee.
“If your coffee is tasting too weak and under-extracted, try adjusting your grind setting a little finer. If that doesn’t help, contact the manufacturer, and consider replacing the burrs in the grinder,” says Douglass Barrow, co-owner and roastmaster of Luna Gourmet Coffee & Tea Company.
Freshly Ground Coffee Makes A Big Difference
If youre dissatisfied with the coffee youre making at home, we hate to be the ones to tell you this, but it might be time to invest in a grinder.
Manson wouldnt commit to saying its a downright rule, but when asked if he would use pre-ground coffee, he replied if Im going backpacking. Lyman agreed that getting the grind size right is imperative and even recommends a specific type that he swears by. Rosenberg likened grinding coffee to sliced bread.

If you leave the loaf of bread and cut a slice each piece is going to be delicious, but the piece you slice within in an hour is going to be stale, she said. Grinding the coffee immediately before is going to give you the best flavor but theres also the matter of convenience sometimes I buy the sliced bread.

How To Strain Your Cold Brew
Once youre done steeping the coffee, youll need to strain the coffee grounds out of the water. A fine-mesh sieve or French press filter isnt sufficient . Most methods will suggest using cheese cloth, but I hate cheese cloth! Its difficult to work with and seems so wasteful.
I played around with other options and found two that work great. See my photos for examples of each. Choose one:
To strain, simply place the coffee filter into a small fine-mesh sieve, or drape your cloth over the sieve. Place it over a pitcher or liquid measuring cup, and pour the concentrate through it. Thats it!
