How To Make Great Coffee: An Overview
There are four main steps in making a great coffee: the grind, the pour/extraction, texturing/heating the milk, and then pouring the milk.
The grind is the first step a lot of people fall over. Many have the grind level set by the coffee company or serviceman, then never adjust it.
The grind needs to be set every day since the weather can have an effect on the grind. A good barista will check the grind each morning by making a few coffees before the store opens and adjusting the grinder accordingly. Throughout the day, the barista will continue to make minor adjustments. I will go into more detail soon.
Now the pour partly depends on the grind and the tamp. Most machines are automatic these days, so the size of the shot of coffee should be already set and therefore, will not be a variable at this stage. Now you want to end up with a beautiful golden even-looking crema, the golden-brownish foam that covers a freshly-brewed cup of espresso, created by the high pressure of the water being forced through the coffee grounds. If your coffee does not have this golden crema on top, you need to start again, as your coffee will not be nice at allit will be either bitter or weak. Again we will go into more detail in the next section.
The milk needs to be smooth, silky, and not too hot. Like the grind, this is a step that many people fall over. They end up with an airy bubbly mess of boiling-hot tasteless milk that ruins the coffee.

Tamp Evenly And Consistently
I had my first barista training in 2012 when I was taught that I should tamp with 20 kilos of pressure. After a few tamps and several years, I still dont know how much is 20 kilos of pressure. So lets kill that popular myth.
So lets tamp in a more modern way. The aim of tamping is to remove any air pockets in the coffee puck and do this so that the puck is completely leveled. Tamp so long and hard that you feel that the puck is compressed . Pay attention that the puck is horizontally leveled so that you avoid channelling and over, under or uneven extraction.

Should I Leave My Bunn Coffee Maker On All The Time
You can leave it on. It will keep the water hot so you can make coffee any time you want.
I turn mine off because I only use it in the mornings. I have it connected to a timer so it will warm up the water about 1/2 hour before I make my coffee.
Then an hour later, it will shut it off until the next day. Works fine for me.

Yes To Any Airtight Container
Especially if there is a way to remove air when you close it up. The ziplock bag that your Sparkplug Coffee comes in works well: push out any air that got in then zip it back up and put it in your cupboard. A mason jar also works fine – if it is clear, make sure to put it somewhere dark and not out on the counter in the sunlight.
Use The Proper Proportions Of Coffee To Water
A common mistake made is not using enough coffee. For most coffeemakers, we recommend 1 Sparkplug Scoop of ground coffee for 8 oz / 235 ml of water . If you want to get very precise, weigh 12-13 grams for standard North American mug or 55-60 grams per liter / quart of water.
It is easy to underestimate the amount of coffee needed – if youre making one cup of coffee, measure the mug so you know if it is one 6-ounce old school serving. Or the increasingly common 10- or 12-ounce servings. Once youve figured out the right measurements for your mug or coffeemaker, you can whip up a brew, certain that youve got the right mix.

What If I Am Making Turkish Coffee For Multiple People With Different Sugar Preferences
If this is the case, you can do one of two things. First, you can make them in different pots, but for that, you would have to have more than one cezve.
Second, you can start making it with no sugar, pour the first pour to all the cups and then add in the sugar in the second pour.
For example: Lets say I making Turkish coffee for 2 of my guests. First, start with the person who wants his sade and then continue with the second person who wants his orta . Below are the steps I would follow to make them at the same time in one pot :
- Start by cooking water and coffee for 2 servings with no added sugar
- Pour your first pour halfway into two coffee pots.
- Boil the second pour and fill up the first serving with no sugar.
- Then add in sugar into the pot, mix it, and bring it to a boil before you top off the second serving. Since Turkish coffee is pretty thick and served in such a small cup, it will have enough sweetness.
Be Aware Of The Yield & Brew Time
Now you are brewing your espresso. If you are using a volumetric machine, be aware of you brew time. In the case of too short extraction time or too long extraction time you might want to make a new espresso and/or check your grind size and dose. If you are using a manual espresso machine, be aware of your yield e.g. if your espresso is running a bit too fast, you are just diluting your espresso and possibly also over-extracting at the same time.

What You’ll Need To Brew Coffee In A Pot:
It doesn’t take much to brew perfect coffee as a matter of fact, it only takes three things:
S For Making Cold Brew Coffee
Here’s how it works: Grind the coffee coarsely, which you can do yourself at home or wherever you buy the beans. Combine the grounds with water, then let it steep overnight, or for around 12 hours.
During this time, the coffee slowly infuses into the water, creating a strong, concentrated brew. Strain the next morning, and you’re ready to go.

Make A Cold Brew Coffee
You may also make cold brew coffee, which has recently become popular. According to Cookie and Kates post, cold brew coffee is essentially steeped overnight in the fridge through thin coffee filters. The process takes a long time , but the flavor is incredible, so depending on how far ahead of time youre ready to prepare the iced coffee, this could be a good alternative.
The Explodinator Stovetop Cafetiere/moka Pot
These little Italian inventions are to say the least unpredictable, they’re great for making a cup of extra strong coffee but ours did manage to explode coffee all over the walls once, my guess, superheated water issues… You put water in to the bottom portion and tightly pack coffee in to the middle bit… Stick it on to the stove and hope against hope that it wont explode, ok they’re not really that bad but they can burst. These work the same way as a percolator except under pressure, the water is heated up until it expands enough to be forced through the packed in coffee… It’s advisable that if you buy one look for a brass valve sticking out the side, if the filter bit clogs the valve will release the pressure from the steam causing minor burns instead of a catastrophic explosion… I’ve thrown in a little cutaway view of how these work in the second picture since they’re simply made but a bit complicated…

Caramel Iced Coffee Ingredients
Were nearly at the moment of truth of determining how to make an Iced Caramel Coffee. The last thing is to set out its ingredients, beginning with the Coffee itself. Only you will know whether you want caffeine in your cuppa. However, for the sake of our instructions, weve chosen caffeinated Columbia Coffee – a deep, rich and well-balanced infusion renowned for its sweet undertones.
Its worth noting, too, that adding milk, sugar, and ice later will inevitably dilute it, so think about making it stronger to offset other ingredients. Apart from the components just mentioned, youll want Caramel syrup or sauce to create the all-important desired flavour. Another optional extra is whipped cream, as well as ground cinnamon, for garnish. Be creative, experimental, and, above all else, have fun!
Making Instant Iced Coffee
You can also add flavored coffee creamer or syrup instead of sugar and spices.

Caf Crema The Mixed Coffee Drink
As the term café crema was replaced with espresso, a new, mixed drink, also called café crema, surfaced as a result of what some believe to be the mixing of Italian and Swiss coffee culture. Confusing, sure, but also delicious!
Café crema, the mixed coffee drink, is made by combining espresso with full-fat milk, sugar, and, believe it or not, flour. It may sound strange, but its thick and creamy, and its sure to bring a smile to your face!
Whipping Up An Instant Latte
If you like your latte darker, dont add all of the steamed milk. Add just enough to reach your desired color.
Where Can I Find Turkish Coffee Cups
If you ever visit Turkey and most other nearby countries, you can find a variety of options for Turkish coffee cups. However, if that is not possible you can easily find them online. Additionally, you can use espresso cups. They are a little larger but they would do the job. Here is a set you can use to make both types of coffees.
Where Do You Find Good Coffee
I have traveled the world enjoying different types of coffee everywhere I go. Just as I sample local craft beers during my travels I also look for local coffee roasters. But to be able to taste and understand the differences in coffee, you need to start with a good baseline. A quality cup of coffee on which to judge all others by. And this is why I drink Peets coffee in my home.
Find a coffee company that is obsessed with freshness. Fresher coffee makes a more flavorful cup. If you dont have a local roaster find a company online that roasts beans to order and delivers directly to your home.

The Basic Parameters Of An Espresso
When making any coffee beverage, you need to know the dose of dry coffee grounds, the amount of water, the extraction time, and the final volume. All these factors are related and, with espresso, you can actually ignore the water volume for now.
Lets break it down:
- A generally good starting place for extraction time is 25 seconds. Stick to this until youre ready to experiment with espresso recipes.
- The amount of dry coffee grounds will vary depending on your espresso basket, but youll probably be using 810 grams per single dose.
- A single espresso shot is generally 2535 ml, which should easily be achievable with these parameters.

However, remember that these are flexible guidelines, not hard-and-fast rules. Every coffee is different. Some will taste better with a shorter extraction time, others with a slightly longer one. Roast profile and grind size will also affect the best parameters.

While you learn how to make an espresso, use these guidelines as a base but as you advance in your coffee knowledge, dont be afraid to experiment. Remember: taste is key. That moment when you drink the espresso is when you know if youve pulled a great shot. These parameters will help you to do so, but theyre not the criteria by which customers will judge their drink.
