The Best Blended Iced Coffee Recipe For Any Time Of Year

If youre like me, your first experience with coffee was a Frappuccino at your friendly neighborhood coffee chain. Though not genuinely reminiscent of any classic Italian espresso beverage, nor any drink within the archetypal chino family, the frozen coffee beverage has taken on a life of its own and rightly earns its place in the modern coffee pantheon. The blended iced coffee beverage may not resemble any classic Italian coffee drink, but it is somewhat similar to the affogato. Broadly speaking, affogato is ice cream, or gelato with a shot of espresso poured on top. While much more ice cream than coffee, the blend of sweet and bitter that emerges from this sublime flavor marriage is precisely what were looking for in a quality blended iced coffee beverage. So lets take a crack at it. To make this blended iced coffee recipe, youll first need a blender. Just about any blender will do. You could even make do with an immersion blender, in a pinch, though a conventional blender with carafe and lid will be best. For an added challenge, consider smoking your own coffee beans. The elements of this blended iced coffee recipe are simple: coffee, sugar/sweetener, milk/milk substitute, and ice. Lets take a quick stab at a basic recipe, and then talk about ways you can tweak it to fit your desired flavor profile.

Fair warning, Vietnamese coffee has a reputation for being sweet, so feel free to reduce the amount of sugar to your preference. Ok, Im picturing you drinking your coffee. Heres a cheers to an awesome week!

Theres nothing worse than leaving you drink for two minutes only to come back and find the ice cubes melted and the drink watery.

A clever way to get around this, and sweeten your coffee at the same time, is to use flavored ice cubes.

Chocolate ice cubes or ice cubes made of sweetened coffee work wonderfully. Another option is mint-flavored ice cubes.

To make chocolate-flavored ice cubes you can use chocolate milk, or mix milk with cocoa powder and sugar. With the coffee ice cubes, you can sweeten the coffee however you want, then freeze it and add the cubes into your coffee the next time you drink it.

    How To Sweeten Iced Coffee

  • Nutrition
  • I recently made the switch from hot coffee to iced coffee and quickly discovered that my normal method of adding a spoonful of sugar to sweeten the drink wont work.

Sugar simply doesnt dissolve in cold liquids and just sinks to the bottom of the cup. Bummer.

This gave me a bit of a dilemma. I decided to conduct an experiment to find out what the best way to sweeten an iced coffee is.

I tried and tested 9 methods. Ive explained my results and what I thought about each method below.

    A note about my experiment:

For consistency, I ordered two venti sized iced coffees from Starbucks. I portioned these out into smaller glasses for each sweetener. I then documented the taste, texture and overall effectiveness of each sweetening ingredient.

This isnt one of my most scientific experiments, as sweetening is largely personal preference. But I hope it helps you to discover some interesting and creative ways to sweeten your coffee without just plain old simple syrup.
