How To Make Starbucks Instant Coffee Packets

Why Is Instant Coffee So Expensive

Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee is easy to make

So why is instant coffee cheaper than ground? To keep costs low, instant coffee manufacturers mostly use the low-quality and cheaper robusta variety of coffee. Whilst there does exist jars of instant coffee made up of 100 percent arabica, the cost price per cup is still lower than even the cheapest ground coffee.

How Is Instant Coffee Made

Instant coffee is made from whole coffee beans that are roasted, ground, and brewed. The water is then removed from the brewed coffee, leaving dehydrated crystals. There are a couple different methods used to make instant coffee blends, but they all start off with this same process of removing moisture from the brewed coffee extract to create solid coffee powder, or granules, behind.

One of the most common ways that moisture is removed from the coffee extract is through spray-drying, why sounds a bit like an oxymoron but here us out. The liquid is sprayed into a stream of scorching air, causing the liquid to evaporate, and the coffee to drift down in a powder form. Sometimes this powder goes through an additional process to form it into granules. Because the extract dries very quickly during the spray-drying process, much of the aroma and flavor is preserved.

Another way to remove the moisture is by freeze-drying the coffee extract. In this process the extract is frozen at around -40°F and broken into crystals. These are then slowly dried using low heat in a vacuum. The low temperatures and slow drying process lock in the flavor in freeze dried coffee.

Why Is My Instant Coffee Hard

Moisture can play a negative role in both the flavor profile and shelf life of your instant coffee. Besides being unsafe, mold growth and moisture can also cause wet clumps of instant coffee to form. While that does not sound that bad, if those large clumps of wet coffee dry out, they become hardened clumps of coffee.

Powder Granules Or Crystals

This is the most common form of instant coffee. Instant coffee powder or granules usually come in a cylindrical waterproof paper or plastic packet, or glass jar if youre going the OG Nescafe or Foldgers route . Instant coffee packets contain one single serving-sized portion in each packet.

They sometimes even come premixed with creamer and sugar, like this Alpine Start option. The drawback of a single serve packet is the packaging waste and that you cannot easily adjust the strength of your coffee. However, they are convenient to carry in your pack, take up virtually no space, and weigh as little as 0.14 ounces. Just be sure to pack out every little bit of trash you make in the backcountry, even the little tops of the packets that wear off.

The minimum additional item you need to do this in a hotel is some kind of jug. You can judge the water amount by eye or cup size in the room.

Instant Coffee Can Also Bloom

You can transform an ok cup of coffee into a great cup of coffee by letting the coffee bloom at the start of the process. When coffee blooms, it releases carbon dioxide that was trapped in the beans during the roasting process. This carbon dioxide restricts the aromas and flavors of the coffee from dissolving in water. Ironically, you can encourage the release of carbon dioxide by adding a small amount of cold water to your instant coffee granules and making a paste before pouring in hot water. This releases the carbon dioxide and allows the natural flavors of the coffee to be released.

Instant coffee is a less expensive and more convenient option for camping. It makes it possible to have a fresh cup of coffee in no time. Choosing the right product and preparing it well is sure to satisfy even the most devout coffee lovers need for a caffeine kick.

Choose The Roast Carefully

The roast indicates how long the coffee beans have been roasted before being processed and that influences the final taste. Coffee beans are commercially roasted to four levels:

  • Light roast: The beans are roasted for the shortest amount of time. A light roast coffee contains the most caffeine, aromas, and flavors. On the other hand, coffee made from lightly roasted beans could taste slightly acidic.
  • Medium roast: The beans are slightly darker than light roast beans. Medium roasted coffee beans have marginally less caffeine but offer a rich aroma without the acidic taste you may find in light roast coffee beans.
  • Medium-dark roast: The beans have a small amount of caffeine but have a strong heavy bodied and slightly spicy taste.
  • Dark roast: The beans are, well, dark in color and contain the least amount of caffeine. Dark roasted coffee beans produce coffee described as full-bodied but could taste bitter or burnt.

How Much Ice Should I Use

Add ice equal to the size of the drink you want. I just fill whatever glass I’ll be drinking out of with ice to measure it. If you’re using ice cream, I’d recommend skipping out on adding any extra ice.

The Starbucks store offers Fontana sauces in place of mocha, white mocha, and some seasonal flavors.

What Is The Simplest Method

You need one tea cup , big enough to hold the coffee packet, once opened 200+/-cc of hot water and sugar or cream, if you dont drink it black.

Open the packet carefully , try not to tear the paper holder inside. Then pull out the insert from the foil packet.

Open the paper insert , open the right way up or the coffee will spill out! And place over your cup like in the picture. Make sure each leg stands over the edge of the cup, this will provide support for the unit once you start pouring hot water.

Ive started pouring hot water now. Dont use boiling water! Good coffee is made with water that has been boiled and is hot enough . Pour gently, pour carefully. Stop if you see a problem.

Pour the first until you see a small bloom, then let it filter into the cup keep pouring gently and stopping until the tea cup is full or you have as much as you need. Dont put too much water through, it will just become watery.

If you are like us and cant start your morning without a cup of coffee, backpacking can present a real dilemma. Do you pack a bunch of extra gear just so you can enjoy a well-brewed cup of coffee in the backcountry? Or do you go with instant coffee packets and save yourself a bunch of weight and space? Its the devils choice. We might be coffee purists at the start of a hike, but after lugging a portable hand grinder and bag of whole beans up the side of a mountain, we become a lot more open to compromise.

The problem is that, despite being lightweight, instant coffee doesnt exactly have the best reputation.

But, theres been a lot of advancements in coffee tech over the past couple years and there are a bunch of new players on the instant coffee scene. So has instant coffee gotten any better? We decided to find out for ourselves.

While there are a lot of people far more qualified to give a coffee review than us, we know what we like: a nice, well-balanced cup of black coffee. And for instant coffee, we think we have pretty reasonable expectations. We dont need our coffee to transport us on a spiritual journey. We just want a solid cup to get us going in the morning without a bunch of hassle.

So we sat down and tried ten different single-serving instant coffee packets to see which one wed bring along with us on our next backpacking trip. Heres our report on the state of instant coffee.

Instant Coffee Is Extremely Lightweight

Equally as important is the lightweight portability of instant coffeeyou dont need to bring any additional brewing gadgets like a coffee pot, v60 pour over, french press, or percolator. All you need is a container to heat water in, like an aluminum kettle or a single-wall titanium mug. Instant coffee sticks or packets also eliminates the need to pack out spent coffee grounds.
