Recipe Coffee To Water Ratio French Press
Strictly speaking, the best recipe for coffee preparation is 2.3 ounces of coffee to 8.8 ounces of water. However, following this recipe, every morning would be very impractical! Its not very convenient to measure your ground coffee and water every time you brew a pot. Generally speaking, the coffee to water ratio for French press is one decent sized tablespoon of coffee to a cup of water. It is, however, popular to drink French press coffee slightly stronger than this. Coffee lovers would often use a tablespoon and a half of ground coffee per cup of water. If you like a milder coffee, stick to the standard recipe!
Blue Bottle Coffee recommends using 40 grams of ground coffee for every 400 grams of water. This ratio is what they call 1:10 coffee to water ratio. Its a little inconvenient to measure it that way if you ask me. But this comes around 3 tablespoons of ground coffee to 2 cups. So this means they like their coffee stronger.
You can play with the coffee to water ratio when brewing with a French press, altering other factors. For instance, if you grind finer, you can use fewer grounds. Water temperature plays a big role here, the hotter the water, the less grounds you need. But with very hot water the brew tends to migrate on the bitter side, being over-extracted.

Use Water That Is Slightly Cooler Than Boiling
Bring water to a boil, then wait a minute or two. Or cool the boiling water with a shot of cool or cold water.
Use fresh water that has not been boiled before for the best taste. The reason is because the water we drink has been aerated and has dissolved gases that make the water taste better. Boiling removes the gases and leaves a “flat” taste.
Tip: Put a bit of hot water in the empty French press to warm it up. You’ll end up with a hotter final cup.

Cleaning a French press is hassle. However, being able to easily clean a French press is vital: because its a full immersion brewer, coffee oils and residue can build up quickly, so taking the brewer apart and putting it back together should be straightforward and simple.;
I evaluated how easy each French press was to use, clean up, and store. I also took into account any stylistic elements, updates on the classic French press design, and the materials used to make each model. Press The Plunger Down Slowly & Rest The Coffee
Slowly and gently press the plunger down with some light pressure. Pressing too fast can cause hot water to spurt out of the spout or around the lid potentially causing injury, and it can also lead to fine grinds blowing by past the stainless steel filter resulting in gritty coffee. Push the plunger by using the weight of your hand at first, and take your time to slowly push the plunger down all the way.
Allow the beans to rest for another 30 seconds to release their flavour. This also helps settle any fine grit that may have come from uneven grinding and found its way past the french press filter screen.

Coffee Grounds And Grinder
A key component to learning how to use a French press coffee maker is to have the right ground of coffee. To do so, you first have to grind your coffee. There are two kinds of grinders, the first one is the blade, and the other kind is a burr.
The blade kind is hard to manage as it only has a simple mechanism. The more you grind, the smaller the pieces of the coffee beans get. The problem with this is the fact that the grind is inconsistent.
When it comes to the burr kind, you can get your coffee beans to have a sandy consistency. At the same time, their sizes are the same. Apparently, there are pros and cons to each kind.
As for the blade, you get to have a more robust flavor; however, you risk trial and error in the brewing method itself. On the other hand, if you use the burr kind, it is easier and faster to brew, but the taste can somehow be mild if you over burred the coffee beans.

Weigh And Grind The Coffee
As Ive discussed before, a proper coffee to water ratio is important for achieving solid, repeatable results. I would recommend starting with 1:15, which is in the middle of the range for French Press. This means youll want about three tablespoons of coffee for each cup of water. Adjust accordingly for different sizes and for your personal taste.
For the grind size, youre looking for coarse here. Because most French Presses use metal filters, you dont want a lot of fines getting through, making for a silty brew. Aim for a consistency between kosher salt and breadcrumbs and adjust according to your brewer and preferences. If you have a brewer that uses a paper filters, for example, you can likely experiment with a finer grind.

A coffee press, sometimes called a French press or plunger pot, is often hailed by coffee enthusiasts as the best method for brewing coffee. It’s one of the few brewing methods that allows all the natural oils and proteins in the grounds to be present in the final cup. Many drinkers also view the press as an exceptionally pure brewing method because it uses no paper filter that could alter the taste of the finished brew. Even better, making coffee with a coffee press is extremely easy once you learn the basics.

Troubleshooting French Press Coffee
There are two things that really muck up French press coffee: water temperature boiling water that scorches the grounds, or tepid water that doesnt extract fully and badly ground coffee with too much fine grit that makes the pressed coffee muddy and bitter.
These are the two factors that, to me, are most commonly ignored and yet easiest to remedy. All you need is a sense of how hot your water is and a burr grinder.
Takeaway: Getting the temperature right is easy .

The Espro P3 is probably the most innovative of the models I tested. The filter is a two-layer mesh cage meant to filter out fine particles, which means you can play with grind settings more. . The resulting coffee is cleaner than any cup I made with the other French presses, but its difficult to clean and doesnt give you the hefty, almost viscous coffee you’d expect from a French press.;
Best for: Folks who like to geek out on coffee; who have a burr grinder and can tinker with different grind settings; who want their coffee to taste closer to a pour over with the ease of a French press.;

Top Tips For Making Aeropress Coffee
- Metal filters are a reusable, convenient alternative to paper filters that give a fuller bodied flavour to the coffee. However, they do not catch the oils or very fine grinds. If youre using your Aeropress daily, a metal filter will work out cheaper over time.
- If youre using paper filters, you can use two to three filter papers for a cleaner brew. It will create slightly more resistance when pressing but it will provide a cleaner cup of coffee.
- If you find the coffee too strong or weak, adjust the ratios by adding more coffee or reducing the amount of water for stronger coffee, or vice versa for weaker.
- Using an AeroPress funnel adds extra security to the placement of the AeroPress, great when youre starting out. Once you are more familiar with the AeroPress you may not need to use the funnel.
- Ideally you want your water to be just off the boil, around 93-96C. Using a thermometer or temperature-controlled kettle lets you set the temperature exactly, but if using a regular kettle, boil the water and open the lid for about 30 seconds to a minute to let it cool down before using.

Pros And Cons Of French Press Coffee
French press coffee has somewhat of a cult following. It extracts a very strong and robust cup of coffee, without the need for any sort of electrical brewing system. You get complete control over your brew, and you can use a French press coffee maker to make other beverages like tea or even cold brew coffee. Plus, it’s dirt cheap. You can get a .
But the French press is not without its drawbacks. Because it’s a manual brewing system, you can’t exactly set it and just walk away. But once you get the hang of the process, you really will end up with delicious coffee in its simplest form.
Whats The Right French Press Ratio
There is no one-size-fits-all ratio. There is a huge spectrum of tastes and preferences, variations in coffee beans, differences in roasts, etc. that can make each batch of coffee entirely different. So start with a ratio, and then adjust from there based on how it tastes.
RULE OF THUMB;;Use a;1:15 ratio;of coffee to water. For every one gram of coffee you need 15 grams of water, which is about 3 tablespoons of coffee for 1 cup of water.;Start here, as this will be on the weaker side, so you can always add a little more coffee if you find it to weak.

Why Do We Love French Press Coffee
There are so many reasons. We gravitate towards making French press coffee most mornings at Fit Foodie HQ because it is a way to brew really good coffee for more than one person at a time.
We prefer a pot of French press coffee over a coffee machine because we have a bit more control over water temperature, how long the coffee brews, and it is usually the perfect amount of coffee for 3-4 people.
Add Your Hot Water & Stir The Grinds
This is the next step in learning how to use a French Press pot. Next, pour hot water, soaking beans in every corner of the French Press. Using coarse ground coffee ensures that the coffee grinds will not come through the French press stainless steel filter mesh. Also, evenly ground coffee beans mean even flavor extraction and consistent flavors from pot to pot.
Give a gentle stir using a wooden or plastic spoon. As you do this break the crust of the coffee beans in the hot water. Always use a wooden spoon as even a gentle tap in the right spot can lead to cracking and breaking of glass french press beakers.
