Ditch the Pods & Single-Use Plastic Servings: I know K-Cups and pods are convenient, but not so much for the environment! Plus, when hot water comes in contact with the plastic, there is a potential for leaching into your coffee.

Use Plastic-Free Brewing Equipment: To avoid having your hot coffee come in contact with plastic, opt for methods such as glass pour over or French press to brew. Check out my Guide to Eco-Friendly Coffee Brewing for a list of zero waste brewing options, including unbleached compostable filters. Better for you and the earth!

Brew with Filtered Water: Trust me, using pure water to brew your coffee makes a HUGE difference in the taste! First of all, tap water often contains dozens of contaminants such as chlorine and heavy metals. Secondly, filtered water has the right balance of minerality and pH which leads to a much finer pairing to let your coffees flavor profile shine. I use a Pure Effect Ultra 3-Stage Water Filter

S Of Processing & Roasting Coffee Beans Changes The Quality For The Safest Coffee

Coffee beans are not really beans. They are the seeds of berries, known as a cherry. These seeds are locked inside a berry and removing them can be challenging. Different processes can change the flavor, acidity, and amount of mycotoxins are inside.

  • Wet Method: Coffee is pulped and then rinsed in water removing layers of fructose and sucrose. This method allows the acidity to be prominent.
  • Other natural processes: Leave the coffee seeds intact while drying, which makes coffee sweeter and increases the number of mycotoxins.

Coffee beans go through various stages of processing before they get to you. When the beans are green in the very beginning stages of processing, mold can form as the coffee beans are stored and transported. Even the worlds strongest coffee can contain these issues.

Clean Coffee Co.

This brand was really intriguing to me and makes a lot of really big claims! However I was left with questions after browsing their website, just looking for clarification on some things, but I never heard back from them so I cant quite form an informed opinion yet.

Price: $18 for 12 oz. bagRoast Options: Medium-Dark, DarkGrind Options: Whole Bean, Ground NoRegion: Honduras and Papua New Guinea Certifications: Rainforest Alliance Certified Lab Results: Available on their websiteOther Notes: Organically grown, hand-picked, hand-washed, sun-dried

First of all, you can only purchase their coffee via Amazon which is a bit strange. And the test results that they publish arent backed up by a certificate of analysis so I dont know how often theyre exactly tested. They claim to have undergone CDFA multi-residue screening. And the Medium-Dark roast says toxin-free while the Dark roast says toxin and mold-free so Im not sure if only one is truly clean. Id love more info from the brand.

Beccas Taste Test:

I tried the Medium Dark Roast and would NOT get it again. It actually made me cough when I took my first sip! It has some nutty and woody notes but a minor hint of brightness. Too dark for my liking.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Beneficial

So, Is Bulletproof Coffee Beneficial?

Low carb diets have taken the world by storm in recent years, and those interested in the trend are starting to seek out products that are high in fat as well as being low in carbs. One such product is known as Bulletproof coffee, and it’s basically coffee mixed with butter.

Bulletproof coffee is a catch-all for coffees that contain butter, coconut or MCT oil, a type of fat extracted from coconut oil. But when consumed for weight loss purposes, those that drink Bulletproof coffee are aiming for ketosis, which is a metabolic state in which fat is the main energy source.

It’s also unnecessary to buy Bulletproof coffee as you can easily make it at home with the coffee that you already drink, though the maker does claim that their production technique reduces the existence of mycotoxins.

Generally, having a butter coffee every once in a while will have no real impact on the health of a given person — but making it into a routine could be harmful. Not only is Bulletproof coffee low in nutrients and loaded with fat — precisely the kinds of foods that we’re warned to stay away from — but the common advice to swap out your morning breakfast with a Bulletproof coffee is actually hurting your nutrition.

Who Should Avoid Bulletproof Coffee?

Why Is My Nespresso Getting Moldy So Quickly

Upgraded Version Coffee Capsules Filter Cup Refillable Reusable Capsule ...

When keeping your machine mold-free, the first thing you should be aware of is what causes it. As one might expect, several factors are at work here, with hard water being one of the main culprits.

So, exactly what is hard water? And how do I keep mold from growing in my Nespresso machine?

When it comes to water, hard water is defined as having a high concentration of minerals.

A large portion of these minerals is calcium, followed by magnesium, which is found in significant quantities in our drinking water due to natural processes.

Youve probably heard of limestone or chalk-based rock it comes from the same source as hard water.

While it may not appear to be much, this excess calcium and magnesium can affect your Nespresso machine over time by accumulating inside the coffee makers structure and causing blockages along the way. This can lead to an unpleasant mold build-up that does not look good!

In reality, the specialty coffee industry has had strict quality assessments which exclude mold from specialty coffee for decades.

An analogy would be if we were to announce that our Hawaiian coffees were the only Fair Trade Hawaiian coffees available, and charge you a 20% premium. Dig a little deeper and you learn that because allHawaiian coffees are grown in the USA, there’s no need for Fair Trade certification because farmworkers legally receive livable wages, which include social security, health insurance, medicare, and worker’s comp.

How To Clean Your Coffee Maker: Keurig Nespresso Black & Decker Mr Coffee

Both Gerba and Yakas say that the heat from the coffee maker can kill most germs, but it shouldn’t replace ritual cleaning or descaling, which should happen every one to six months depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

While its possible the heat of coffee brewing might kill some microbes, why take a chance?” Yakas said. “We think its best to go to the source and keep the coffee maker clean.”

So, here’s how to properly clean your coffee maker according to the product’s manufacturer:

Keurig: Turn off the Keurig and empty out the water reservoir, removing the filter. Pour Keurig descaling solution into the reservoir. After pouring the entire solution in, fill the empty bottle with water and add that into the reservoir. Power the Keurig back on, place a mug, perform a cleansing brew using 10 oz. brew size and then pour out the contents of the mug. Repeat until the “add water” light comes on. Let the Keurig sit for about 30 minutes and then rinse out the reservoir thoroughly. Fill the reservoir with fresh water and perform at least 12 cleansing brews.

Mr. Coffee: Some traditional coffee makers aren’t programmable with a cleaning cycle, in which it’s recommended to clean your coffee maker with the vinegar solution every 40 to 80 uses. Instead of using the auto clean button, turn on the coffee maker until the carafe is three cups full. Turn if off and wait 30 minutes, then turn it back on and brew the rest.

Nespresso pods only last as long as they do because of their airtight seal. The grounds will quickly go bad if that seal is punctured or broken.

Although the Nespresso pods body is strong, its top and bottom can be punctured. Therefore, it is crucial to keep them away from sharp objects. Additionally, pods should not be placed under heavy objects.

How Much Vinegar Do I Use To Clean My Nespresso Machine

If you plan on using hard water for your milk frothing, the calcification build-up in your machine will be pretty extreme. That is why I RECOMMEND USING A 50/50 MIXTURE OF DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR AND WATER every other week to soak the bottom two at the back of the group head.

But dont go crazy with measuring here add as much as you can fit into your reservoir, then top off with water.

Now run a shot through and see if you notice any difference in taste or smell. If everything seems fine, keep going if not, repeat these steps until things seem back to normal. You may need a stronger solution with more vinegar but err on the side of caution.

When I first started using this method, I was super concerned with how vinegary my shots tasted. Even now, if I havent descaled my machine in a while , it can be noticeable to me but most people wont notice anything.

Its the smell that youre mainly trying to remove, not flavor. If your espresso doesnt smell like fish anymore, then you know things are back to normal!

What 3rd Party Certifications Should I Be Looking For In A Coffee Brand

There are quite a few 3rd party certifications to look for when choosing from all of the coffee brands on the market. These 3rd party certifications will ensure that a brand isnt just making claims of being a clean coffee brand but rather they are living up to those claims. Here are some of the main 3rd party certifications you will want to know about:

I think its important to realize the care that is taken by brands who have earned these certifications. They are certainly not taking the easy road. Its also easy to see why you may have to spend a little more to purchase coffee from a brand that has earned these certifications.

I also think that if you are buying from a smaller brand and they dont necessarily have all the certifications, you need to realize that it is probably quite expensive to achieve certification in all these areas. It may not be within their budget even if they are using, for instance, organic practices. Go with what you are comfortable with!
