What Is Cold Foam

Cold foam is frothed nonfat milk that makes a frothy topping for cold coffee drinks like iced coffee, cold brew, iced cappuccinos and nitro coffee. It simulates the frothy topping of the steamed milk in a latte or cappuccino, but at a cold temperature so it doesnt melt when hitting the drink.

Cold foam sits atop a drink with a thick, frothy texture, and gradually settles in as you sip it. Because its made with nonfat milk, it adds only a handful of calories to the drink: but the lightly sweet crema topping has a major pay-off in texture! Over here were wary of most trends: but this one is absolutely delicious.

What Kind Of Milk Does Cold Foam Use

Despite its relatively creamy consistency, Starbucks cold foam is made using nonfat milk. Generally speaking, nonfat makes a stronger foam than 2 percent or whole milk because it has a larger percentage of protein.

But what makes milk foam to begin with? Milk protein contains hydrophilic ends that are attracted to water and hydrophobic ends that are repelled by water, according to Serious Eats. With the addition of heat or steam, the proteins unfold to form bubbles, with the water-repelling hydrophobic ends of the protein facing towards the center of the bubble and the hydrophilic ends facing away from the center of the bubble. When vigorously shaken or blended cold, nonfat milks high-protein makeup also helps make a more robust foam, albeit with larger bubbles because of the lack of fat.

  • Cold Brew or Iced Coffee
  • Milk
  • Cocoa

Starbucks is using a cold brew coffee for the base and I do recommend that. It has an incredibly smooth taste, due to the low acidity. You can, however, also use iced coffee. Ive been so busy this holiday season and havent had time to make any cold brew, so I just grabbed a bottle of Starbucks Iced Coffee from my grocery store.

Im not sure what kind of cocoa Starbucks is sprinkling on top, but I had Hersheys Special Dark on hand and that seemed to work well for me. You really only want to add a dash of cocoa, just enough so that you smell it as you sip. The aromatics really add a lot to the drink.

How To Make Starbucks Cold Brew

Cold brew is smooth, mellow, and incredibly delicious. The version available at Starbucks is especially tasty full of vanilla or caramel sweet cream. The good news? You dont have to find a Starbucks and fork over a small fortune to enjoy it!

Heres our easy recipe for how to make Starbucks cold brew at home. Its so simple and affordable that you may want to skip coffee shops altogether!

When Did Starbucks Start Serving Cold Foam

Cold foam is a relatively recent addition to Starbucks. A Starbucks representative tells Eater that cold foam originated in 2014 as a component of the Americano con Crema served at the chains Seattle Reserve Roastery. It was then rolled out at the companys Reserve Bar locations in 2017, then across the U.S. and Canada in April 2018 in the form of the Cold Foam Cascara Cold Brew, Cold Foam Cascara Nitro Cold Brew, and the Cold Foam Blonde Iced Cappuccino. Customers can now add it to any Starbucks iced beverage.

These days, people visiting a Starbucks will likely feel bombarded by cold beverages layered with this unsteamed nonfat foam. Theres a reason for that: Cold beverages like cold brew and Refresher juices accounted for more than 80 percent of Starbuckss beverage growth over the past two years, according to a December 2018 investor call. Those cold beverage sales, in turn, comprise more than 50 percent of the chains overall sales up 37 percent from 2013. Thats a lot of iced lattes and nitro cold brew.

Cheapest Supplies For Making Cold Brew At Home

Half of the reason for developing this cold brew recipe in the first place was to save money. So I tried to figure out how to get every supply and ingredient for the lowest price possible. Heres what I came up with:

Coffee beans Making cold brew concentrate uses an absolutely ridiculous amount of coffee, and if you want yours to taste exactly like Starbucks, you need to buy the expensive Starbucks Espresso Dark Roast Whole Bean Coffee . But the secret money hack is to buy recently expired coffee beans on eBay. They work just as well, and Ive been getting them for as much as 75% off retail price! For this recipe, you need 3.3 lb of coffee beans.

Brew bags To make cold brew at home using my immersion method, youll need some sort of porous teabag or filter. And to keep long-term costs down, I recommend buying reusable brew bags. The best ones Ive tried are the Doppelgänger Goods 12 x 12 Reusable Coffee Filters. For my cold brew recipe, youll need two of them.

Coffee grinder If you already have a coffee grinder, you probably dont need a new or special one. Just make sure yours has a coarse grind setting, and you should be good to go. If you dont have one, feel free to buy the grinder I use. You can sometimes find them brand new on eBay for less money.

Fresh Mint Cold Brew Iced Coffee

For some reason, coffee and fresh mint might taste unfamiliar. But once theres a touch of dark chocolate coconut ganache in the drink, it will make you feel like a God-given offering. The taste feels like heaven that one would die for.

This iced cold brew coffee is served with a fresh mint fragrance, making you appreciate both caffeine and spice aroma. Easy to make at home, it is a good-to-go springtime beverage!

What About A Caramel Version

Many of us love caramel in coffee, especially dark roast coffee, since it plays up the caramel notes naturally present in the beans. If caramel is more your thing than vanilla, you can make a caramel simple syrup instead. Skip the vanilla bean and cook the water and sugar mixture until it turns you guessed it a nice caramel color.

How To Make Cold Brew In A French Press

Taste of HomeWith its built-in filter, a French press makes cold brewing easy. Simply mix the coffee and water in the chamber and then, without pressing the plunger down, place in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, slowly press the plunger down. Then pour the brew through a coffee filter to remove the fine sediment.

Grind The Beans Coarsely

Heres the only fussy thing about making cold brew coffee: you should take care to use coarsely ground beans. A fine grind can slip through the sieve you use in this method and create a gritty, cloudy end product.

The grind you want is extra coarsea slightly larger grind than youd use for a French press or percolator. If youre buying your beans from a café, simply tell the barista that youll be making cold brew they will know exactly what to do. If youre using the grinder at the grocery store or at home, opt for the coarsest setting.

Cold brew coffee is EVERYWHERE right now. Even in the cooler months, Im all about iced coffee. Have you fallen on the bandwagon yet?

In case you didnt know, cold brew coffee is different than just plain iced coffeeits actually brewed in cold water. The stronger coffee holds up when ice is added, since its cold to begin with. No more watery iced coffee!

It all starts with coarse ground coffee. Buy your favorite whole bean variety and barely grind it. As you can see above, a few almost whole beans are completely fine for cold brew coffee. In a large pitcher with a lid , place filtered water and coffee. Let it sit overnight to two days in the refrigerator. Slowly filter the mucky coffee water into a new pitcher. Voila: cold brew!

I love the strong cold brew with a bit of flavor from SweetLeaf Sweet Drops. Sugar free, made from Stevia, it adds TONS of flavor to your coffee. Finish with some cream and you have yourself a fab iced coffee. Something like this runs $4-5 at Starbucks, youve made at home for pennies.

The SweetDropsrun between $8-10 for a bottle, but a little goes a LONG way. I love to add a drop to my hot cocoa or oatmeal, too! Aside from ordering online, Ive found the drops at local health food stores and even once at Meijer! The Vanilla and English Toffee are my favorites.

How To Make The Vanilla Syrup

  • Add water to a saucepan over high heat. When it comes to a boil, remove the pan from the heat, add the sugar, and stir to dissolve. Alternatively, you can boil water in a kettle and mix with the sugar.
  • Next, add the bean to the sugar syrup.
  • Allow the mixture to cool completely, then discard the vanilla bean and store the sugar syrup in the refrigerator.
  • How To Make Cold Brew Coffee In A French Press

If using a French press, once your coffee is done, gently press the mesh down on the grounds to filter them out. Pour the coffee into a jar or bottle for holding. French press cold brew makes less mess, so if you plan to brew cold regularly, it’s worth investing in the coffee maker.

With other kinds of containers, put a filter or cheesecloth in a sieve on the mouth of another container. Gradually pour coffee through the filter.

Or, before you brew, use a rubber band to bundle grounds in a coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth. Put in the packets and cover the container with plastic wrap. Just pitch the packets when you’re done.

    Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew

Here comes another tempting cold brew alternative you cant overlook. It is a so-called Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew. The drink texture is so creamy with a bit of bitterness from caffeine, which is absolutely uplifting. Leave alone its low calories and fat-free. Make it at home wont be as complex as you imagine. More importantly, it gives the same flavour as the one you pay at Starbucks.

What Does Cold Foam Taste Like

    How To Make Starbucks

Whether or not youll like cold foam depends on how you take your coffee. Because its made with nonfat milk, cold foam might be less flavorful or creamy than what some are used to on their lattes if nonfat milk tastes watery to you, a flavored cold foam topping from Starbucks or elsewhere might be a better option. If you prefer extra creamy coffee, this might not be the drink for you: Cold foam tends to sit at the top of the beverage and doesnt incorporate well into the coffee. Its also not an option for customers who prefer alternative milks such as soy milk.

Lets face it. As college students, most of us wouldnt be here today if it werent for the power of a good cup of coffee. Hot or iced, black or with cream, many of us have turned to coffee at least a few times in our collegiate careers to write those last few paragraphs or memorize those last few elements.

While there are plenty of great and effective ways to brew that neat little bean, none are as unique as the elusive cold brew. Once limited to small hipster coffee shops because it takes 12+ hours to brew in small batches, this tasty sensation is catching our eye and finally getting the attention it deserves. As Starbucks stores across the country are launching cold brew as a new beverage option, its easy to make and customize your own version at home.

The mechanics of making coffee are pretty simple. Grind the beans and add hot water, where the hot water then soaks into the grinds and extracts the caffeine and flavors of the bean. The grinds are then filtered out, and we can drink our coffee and go about our merry, caffeinated ways. With cold brew, the idea is that the heat is replaced with time- instead of brewing with hot water and achieving instant gratification, cold brew uses cold or room temperature water, so the process takes longer.
