What Does The Number On Nespresso Pods Mean

What Nespresso Has To Say About It

What The Intensity Numbers On Nespresso Capsules Mean

The company itself says that the intensity bar on their capsules has nothing to do with the amount of caffeine found in coffee. They select the rating based on the grounds to water, ratio, roast, and bitterness.

A bitter coffee with a lot of body is considered intense by Nespresso standards. Such coffees get a grade of 8 or higher on the intensity scale. The ones that are rated at 6 or lower are considered as not intense.

Unfortunately, the scale says nothing of the balance of those attributes. So, a marking of 8 or 9 can easily mean that you are brewing a cup that has a lot of body but very fruity in flavor, or a rather bitter brew with little coffee solids.

Nespresso Coffee Machines Without Water Pressure

When a coffee machine loses water pressure when brewing coffee, this is usually caused by excessive calcification. Sediments and limescale are deposited in the internal pipes of the coffee machine, preventing the normal circulation of water . One or more descaling operations can solve this issue.

A completely different situation is if your Nespresso coffee machine has no pressure, i.e. no or very little water comes out. In this case, it is most likely that the pressure pump has broken down. In these situations, you must disassemble the coffee machine and check the pump to ensure it is good. If it is faulty, it should be replaced.

When you disassemble the machine, you should look for a pump like the one in the picture below, Write down the characteristics of the pump and look for a replacement on the internet.

Can I Pour Milk Into The Water Tank

No. Never. We dont know why many users persist in this madness against single-serve coffee machines.

Lets be clear: Nespresso machines work with water and are designed to work with water. Milk has fats, sugars and a host of other qualities that will cause residues and unexpected consequences when passing through the internal circuit of the coffee machine. And another thing: have you ever stopped thinking milk has a different boiling point than water?

What usually goes wrong with Nespresso coffee machines? Well, the causes can be many, but before we start talking about solutions, a small clarification: When we have a problem with our Nespresso machine, we do not necessarily have a breakdown or a fault. Often, these situations can be rectified and do not affect the machines functionality.

We clarify this because talking about breakdowns implies that we must take the machine to a technical service in most cases. However, in many cases, the problems that arise can be corrected by ourselves in a very simple and easy way we are talking about jammed capsules, loose or broken parts, etc.

Ispirazione Genova Livanto: Best Blend Nespresso Capsule

Price : £3.60 | Buy now from Nespresso

The exceptionally drinkable Genova Livanto is by far our favourite Nespresso blend. Beans come from across Central and South America and are treated to a long roast period but arent roasted until very dark. Roasting for longer means the acidity is lowered and makes it easier to pull out certain aromas. On the nose, Livanto is sweet and malty, which follows through when drinking alongside hints of fruit, acidity and sourness.

There is a lot of complexity here but everything is well balanced, so its not overly bitter, sour or acidic. Overall, this well-rounded capsule is a very pleasant everyday blend.

Pour Over Coffee Pods

If you have the Vertuo Next model, you have the option to brew a carafe pour-over style pod. This will be 18 oz in volume, which is more than two times the size of a regular coffee pod. However, the caffeine levels per 8 oz cup of coffee would be the same between the regular coffee and pour over capsules.

What About Nespresso Compatible Capsules Intensity Ratings

Some of the Nespresso compatible capsules we have been reviewing do publish an intensity rating for their coffee. If so, you can find it in the specific review, as with any original Nespresso pods.

Whether this rating means the same as the Nespresso ones it is not known. Most capsules have a different scale anyway, Caffé Vergnano has a 1 to 5 scale that definitely doesnt match Nespressos.

Dont judge then an intensity rating in absolute terms, comparing different brands capsules with each other. A 5 rated capsule of a company can mean extremely intense for them but on the weak side for another company. The various ratings cannot be compared with each other, only within the same brand.

The clearest definition remains the one of the SCAs: how many solids are present in your cup of coffee. It doesnt help much a consumer though, and what you feel its more intense may not be intense for your barista at all.

What do you think defines an intense coffee? Do you agree with the SCA or Nespressos definition? What do you think its the most intense coffee capsule?

Do All Nespresso Pods Have The Same Caffeine

I Tried Every Nespresso Pod

Most capsules for Original line machines will have between 55 and 65 mg of caffeine. Espresso and lungo pods differ in the amount of caffeine. The four Lungo capsules will have slightly higher levels, 77 to 85 mg. At the high end of the range, youll find that Palermo Kazaar has the most caffeine in it with 125 mg.

Coffee Intensity Ratings For Third

Other coffee companies make pods that fit the OriginalLine Nespresso machine, but their rating systems dont always use the same scale as Nespresso-branded pods.

For this reason, you shouldnt directly compare the numbers on Nespresso pods and third-party pods. Some companies use a scale of 1 to 5. In that case, their five might be a Nespresso 13, but theres no way to be sure without trying them out.

Least Intense: Levels 1

If you want a coffee with more flavor, a bright profile, a light body and a sweet taste, then choose a pod with a rating between 1 and 5. This coffee goes through a short and light roasting. As a result, the flavor profile of the coffee will reflect the characteristics of the climate and soil of its origin.

Low intensity coffee and espresso pods are especially great for drinking black or americano-style . These allow the unique flavors of the coffees origin to come through.

Cons Of Nespresso Original

HiBREW 4 in 1 Multiple Capsule Expresso Machine for Nestle Dolce Gusto ...
  • The longest drink you get is 110ml

Nespresso Original machines generally only make espresso or longer espresso-based drinks. They usually come with a milk frothing option, or can be bought as a bundle with the Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother, so you can froth up milk to make lattes, cappuccinos and other milky coffee-based drinks.

Drink size options usually range from a ristretto to a lungo. Original capsules only come in one size and can therefore only go so far before the drink is too diluted to be palatable. In order to get a longer coffee youd have to use two capsules.

Nespresso Original line machines come in all shapes, colours and sizes, with some super-compact options for smaller households.

What Pods Are Compatible With Nespresso Vertuo

So far, only Nespresso brand capsules are compatible with Nespresso VertuoLine machines, so you will need to buy from the company if you have a Vertuo coffee maker. Or you can buy a refillable pod for your VertuoLine coffee machine to make regular coffee, which we think is the best Nespresso capsules alternative.

Original Line: All About That Pressure

Each Nespresso Original espresso machine has a unique design and configuration, but for the most part, they all work the same way.

With this line of Nespresso espresso machines, you insert a compatible capsule and close the machine. The pod is punctured three times on the top side. When you choose your drink size, the coffee machine pumps the correct amount of water from the water tank to the capsule.

The water line is curled around a heating element, ensuring the water reaches perfect brewing temperature on its journey.

The heated water is pumped into the capsule under high pressure until the broad, foil-covered side of the capsule bursts, releasing rich, crema-topped espresso. A filter inside the capsule ensures that no coffee grounds get into your cup of coffee.

As if using these single-serve brewers isnt easy enough, clean-up is even simpler. When you open any Nespresso machine to insert a new capsule, the coffee machine automatically ejects the used pod into a built-in waste bin.

How Much Caffeine Is In A Nespresso Pod

A single Nespresso capsule can contain anywhere from 55 to 200 milligrams of caffeine. This is certainly a wide range, but it makes sense considering Nespresso capsules are designed to make all sorts of different drinks. Original capsules generally have less caffeine than Vertuo because they are designed for smaller portions. That being said, some Original capsules, including Napoli and Palermo Kazaar, surpass 100 milligrams of caffeine. Vertuo capsules designed for large drinks like lungo and alto contain the most caffeine. Fortunately, Nespresso does an excellent job of labeling caffeine content on the brand website.

The Importance Of Roasting

Now that we know the intensity number of a Nespresso capsule is determined by the process of roasting the beans before packaging, lets take a look at this roasting process to find out how different roasts lead to these variable intensity levels.

How Are Coffee Beans Roasted, and Why?

When coffee beans arrive at the roasters, they dont look much like what most of us think of when we picture them. In fact, before the roasting process, coffee beans are usually quite green!

Thats where roasting comes in. The process of roasting things greenish coffee beans involves heating them to create chemical reactions that pull from the beans all of the characteristic aromas and flavors hiding inside .

What Are the Different Kinds of Roasts?

There are four basic roasts for coffee beans :

  • Light roasts
  • Medium dark roasts
  • Dark roasts

Generally speaking, the darker the roast, the higher the intensity of the brewed coffee. That is, a dark roast is going to be much richer and more bitter than lighter roasts.

I dont always buy Nespresso branded capsules so the intensity numbers dont usually apply to the non-Nespresso branded options. This for instance is a very intense dark roast capsule that Ive bought a few times for my Essenza Mini. It would correlate to an intensity 12 but its not labeled as such.

Forced Labour In Thai Fishing Industry

At the conclusion of a year-long self-imposed investigation in November 2015, Nestlé disclosed that seafood products sourced in Thailand were produced with forced labour. Nestlé is not a major purchaser of seafood in Southeast Asia, but does some business in Thailand primarily for its cat food. The study found virtually all US and European companies buying seafood from Thailand are exposed to the same risks of abuse in their supply chains. This type of disclosure was a surprise to many in the industry because international companies rarely acknowledge abuses in supply chains.

Nestlé was expected to launch a year-long program in 2016 focused on protecting workers across its supply chain. The company has promised to impose new requirements on all potential suppliers, train boat owners and captains about human rights, and hire auditors to check for compliance with new rules.

While using Fairtrade-certified coffee has no real impact on you or your coffee experience, using it can be a huge deal for the coffee famers who produce the coffee you drink.
