Making a coffee literally couldnt be easier: all you have to do is choose a capsule, place it inside the machine, and press the one button that sits on top of the machine. The Nespresso machine then reads the capsule and brews your coffee.

Ive tested my fair share of appliances and home goods as the Ecommerce Writer across Real Homes, Ideal Homes, Living Etc and Homes and Gardens, but trying out a Nespresso coffee maker was high on my wishlist. And it did not disappoint. Im an avid coffee drinker, often relying on it to get through my day and hours of writing . Just as much, I drink coffee for enjoyment, and can appreciate a good cup.

I recently moved into a new apartment in East London and was surviving on instant or press coffees before the Nespresso came along. Lucky for me it went well with the modern interiors of my kitchen and the other black appliances I have around the house. I tested this machine for a good couple of months, and at the time of writing have enjoyed an estimated 100 cups of coffee, including the espresso, double espressos and mug size variants. Ive cleaned it more than a few times and descaled it once to see how it performs too.

Are Nespresso Vertuo Next For You

A couple important notes:

• The Vertuo Next is Nespresso’s newest VertuoLine model, but instead of going bigger/better, they went smaller. It has the slimmest width at just 5.5″ but otherwise is the least feature-rich of every model.
• You’d think the VertuoPlus and VertuoPlus Deluxe would be better than the regular Vertuo, but that isn’t the case. Sure, the VertuoPlus Deluxe has the largest reservoir of the three at 57 oz, but the Vertuo has a larger spent capsule container and a 1350W heating element with a 15-second heat-up speed.

Of the 5 VertuoLine models, the Vertuo Next is the slimmest and is ideal if you’re looking for a model that doesn’t take up much space.

If the downsides above scared you off a VertuoLine machine, check out the Nespresso Essenza Plus. It has a 34 oz reservoir with preset brew sizes for 1.35 oz espresso, 3.70 oz lungo, 5.05 oz Americano, and 6.75 oz Americano XL in a slimmer, 4.7″ wide model.

But again, if you’re repeatedly going to be brewing full-sized coffees then there’s nothing wrong with getting a VertuoLine machine.

That said, while we prefer Nespresso to every other single-serve brand, perhaps something like the Keurig K-Cafe is more your speed. Like Nespresso VertuoLine machines, the K-Cafe brews both espresso drinks and full-sized coffees, except the K-Cafe is better at coffees than espresso drinks whereas Nespresso is better at espresso drinks than coffees.

How Does It Compare To Other Models

This best pod coffee maker is one of the easiest Ive used. Okay, its not meant for the professional baristas in mind, but I think it makes great coffee that tastes just as good as one made with a bean-to-cup industry led machine. And Id expect nothing less from Nespresso. Design wise, I find it to be the most attractive of coffee makers, especially if you like the modern style. There are a few colors to choose from, including a gray, red and chrome for a more traditional, high-end look. And with stainless steel or rose gold touches, theres something for everyone. Its the slimmest Ive noticed, when it comes to pod machines, considering comparable models like the Nespressos Vertuo plus or the Nespresso Lattissima One .

Other upgrades include the compatibility with multiple size coffee pods, so you can have an espresso to start your day, a mug at lunch and a gran lungo before bed. It also has a new brewing system, where Centrifusion technology reads the barcode in each coffee capsule to cleverly adjust the settings to create the best blend. But the biggest, and most important comparison worth making to previous models is its drive towards sustainability. This maker is the first to be made of 54% recycled plastics. Not to mention, all Nespresso coffee is cased in recyclable aluminum capsules, which is great if compared with the rest of the market.

Water Reservoir And Capsule Containers

Vertuo Plus has a 40 oz adjustable water tank, which can rotate to the side or back of the machine. This design makes it easy to fill the take and fit on a narrow countertop. Keep in mind, that the water tank is 3.5 inches, so factor that space into the side or back of dimensions when considering the size.

Vertuo Next doesnt have an adjustable water tank. Its placed in the back and smaller compared to Plus 37 oz. The water reservoir is removable, which makes refilling easy.

Both devices have an automatic capsule ejection system, where the lid grabs the capsule when you open it, and the capsule slides into the disposal bin. That means you dont need to take out the hot, used pod once the coffee maker is done brewing coffee. Used pods are automatically stored in the coffee machines pod container. The automatic disposal is a nice feature on Vertuo models, especially if you use it several times per day.

The difference is Vertuo Plus has a larger container that can hold up to 10 capsules, while Vertuo Next can hold eight used pods.

Cleaning The Nespresso Vertuo Next

Theres no surprise then, that cleaning the coffee machine is fuss-free. Since there aren’t many parts to dismantle or settings to play with, cleaning the machine took me 15 minutes only. The self-pod emptier puts all the used pods in a box automatically as you open it up after use. Emptying this is the first step. In between cleaning, your app or a red light on the top of the machine will let you know when it needs emptying. And there was also little to no coffee spill or need to wash out the container either. The water tank then needs a wash with hot water and a mild detergent, and the pod holder, handles and drip tray wanted a quick wipe down with an antibacterial spray and microfiber cloth. Then, I put the machine through a rinse to clear out the insides for any build-up and residue. Dried with a clean cloth and it was ready to use again.

The machine will need descaling every so often. Nespresso advises to do this every 600 coffee pods or at least every 6 months. Really, this depends on how much coffee you drink. Again your app would let you know when. I haven’t had this machine for that long, but descaled the machine for testing purposes. To do so, I took the maker apart and cleaned, before adding water and a descaling agent to the container and held the button down for 7 seconds. Refill for drinkable water and clean and rinse again before making your next mug.

How Is Vertuo Next Different From Other Vertuo Machines

Vertuo Next is the latest in the Vertuo line of machines, which started in 2014 with a machine known simply as the Vertuo.

The VertuoPlus followed the Vertuo, and now we have the Vertuo Next.

Comparing the Vertuo Next to its predecessor the VertuoPlus, the key differences are:

• Vertuo Next is shorter and more compact
• Vertuo Next has a manual capsule lid where VertuoPlus had an automatic lever
• Vertuo Next has one extra brewing size
• Vertuo Nexts removable water tank carries only 1.1 liters instead of 1.7

If youre a coffee lover, at some point youve probably thought about a Nespresso after all the variarty and convenience is a key selling feature. Ive been reviewing Nespresso machines recently and finally had the chance to try out the Nespress Virtuo line. IN this review Im going to check out the Nespresso Vertuo Next by DeLonghi. Ill tell you how the machine works, what makes it special and how its different from a typical Nespresso machine, as well as what I think of the coffee.

Coffee Flavor: Breville Nespresso Vertuo Next

Heating system

Since these are capsule machines, you can expect the heating system to work very fast. Both make use of a single boiler and a 37 oz water tank to brew coffee grounds in capsules. It takes around 25 seconds for the machine to heat water, and you will get an espresso shot or double espresso in 60 seconds.

Taste-wise, I have nothing to complain about. Both machines brew rich and aromatic coffee, which makes going to Starbuck and spending hundreds of dollars in the long run not worthwhile.

The thing is Breville Vertuo Next functions much more stably. Even though it does make a bit of noise when brewing, I never find any fault with it. On the contrary, the Delonghi started leaking 3 weeks after I got it, and I found coffee in the used capsules container. Capsules arent exactly cheap so I was very upset that the machine was wasting my coffee.

After some investigations, it seems that this is a common problem of this product line of Delonghi. Nevertheless, many other customers noy pulling espresso shots from this device without any problem. So, I guess you will have to weigh this issue for yourselves.

Brewing technique

These machines boast of the CENTRIFUSION technology with evenly running water through the coffee grounds to extract all the notes of flavor and aroma. Then these espresso makers will spin the capsule at high speed so that the puck is dry and finally deposit the used capsule in its container. All these steps happen in a matter of seconds.

Coffee Brewing And Taste

Nespresso Vertuo machines use centrifusion technology, which spins the capsules 7,000 times per minute to blend the coffee and hot water for a delicious end result.

When it comes to coffee brewing, both coffee machines can make a single cup of coffee in about 25 seconds from inserting the pod until the coffee maker starts brewing. Overall, you wont wait for more than a minute for your coffee to be ready. The Vertuo Next has a louder pump than the Plus. Running the Next was closer to flying on an airplane.

However, there are also 18 oz pour-over carafe pods, which are exclusively compatible with Nespresso Vertuo Next.

In terms of coffee taste, both Vertuo machines make perfectly blended coffee. But, my vote goes to Nespresso Vertuo Plus because it can make better crema. Its creamier and more consistent. Also, this machine makes hotter coffee compared to the Next.

Hypothetically, the taste should be near-identical because both machines use the same VertuoLine technology. However, I found Vertuo Next coffee has a more bitter flavor, while Vertuo Plus coffee tastes a little sweeter, especially if you make a milk drink. I noticed Nespresso Vertuo Next takes about 10 seconds longer to brew coffee compared to Nespresso Vertuo Plus, which could mean that Vertuo Next extracts more flavors. This results in a bitter drink with a bubblier, more aerated crema.
