Brigham Young University Ends Mormon Ban On Caffeinated Soda
Brigham Young University, the largest Mormon college in the US, has decided to begin selling caffeinated sodas.
The surprise announcement marks a major cultural shift for the church-owned university which has been designated “caffeine-free” since the 1950s.
Students had been advocating for the change since at least 2012 after the church revised its policy on the stimulant prized by college students.
Mormons are still prohibited from consuming tea or coffee.

But following Brigham Young’s policy switch, sales of fizzy drinks have already begun on the Utah campus.
“Consumer preferences have clearly changed,” the university’s dining services page explained in an online Q&A announcing the change.
Non-caffeinated sodas will continue to be offered, but not highly caffeinated “energy drinks”.
In 2012 the Mormon church clarified its policy on caffeine, paving the way for Thursday’s decision.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it is formally known, determined that a reference to “hot drinks” in religious texts only applied to tea and coffee, not all caffeine products.
The decision occurred around the time that Mitt Romney was spotted swigging a Diet Coke during his presidential campaign against Barack Obama, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Mormon Church Warning: Beware Of Those Fancy Coffee Drinks
SALT LAKE CITY The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued a warning to members that coffee is prohibited no matter how fancy the name, that vaping is banned despite the alluring flavors and that marijuana is outlawed unless prescribed by “competent” doctors.
The new guidance in the August issue of a church youth magazine does not include fundamental changes to the religion’s strict health code, but the clarifications are significant and seem to reflect growing concern about young Latter-day Saints’ adherence to the rules.
The article says it aims to clear up issues that could be confusing for young people within the religion’s “Word of Wisdom,” a set of rules about what foods and drinks are good for members and what substances they should avoid.
The rules prohibit alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and coffee and tea. They are based on what church members believe was a revelation from God to founder Joseph Smith in 1833. The faith’s rejection of coffee has long generated curiosity and more than a few jokes, including a scene in the biting satirical Broadway musical called “The Book of Mormon” where dancing cups of coffee appear in missionary’s nightmare.
The new instructions about coffee make clear that there’s no gray area allowing coffee-infused drinks and allude to the wide variety that could tempt members of the faith widely known as the Mormon church.

The Word of Wisdom actually encourages the;use of herbs in verses 8 and 10-11:

For weeks now Ive been seeing a persistent rumor circulating in social media: that the prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Russell M. Nelson, is about to lift the ban on Mormons drinking caffeinated coffee and tea.
Now before I go on the record as saying that I think this rumor is, at best, wishful thinking on the part of people who would like to gulp down a guilt-free frappuccino, let me out myself as an utter failure at giving credence to other early rumors when those rumors did, in fact, wind up bearing fruit.
To wit: I wrote a column nearly a year ago saying that people who believed that the LDS Church was about to shorten its Sunday services to two hours instead of three were completely off base, and if I was wrong I would eat my hat.
Here is the follow-up post in which I described what it tasted like to eat my hat.
The point is that Ive been 100% wrong before, so you should take what Im about to say with a grain of salt in your aforementioned coffee: I do not believe this rumor.
One of the reasons I dont believe it is that my own research, which does not have any bearing on the matter, has been cited on social media as proof that the prophet is about to loosen the churchs restriction against coffee.
Say what? If I had been drinking coffee, I would have spat it out in surprise when I saw that.
For the record, the Next Mormons Survey did find that:
Vitamins, at least, are Word of Wisdom-approved.
What Happens If A Mormon Drinks Coffee
Do they get kicked out of the club? According to online research, if a Mormon gets caught drinking coffee, its unlikely that theyll get excommunicated. Still, theyll likely be considered unworthy to enter the temple and will get told they cant have the spirit with them while putting pollutants in their bodies.
The problemwill lie if an active member of the church is trying to persuade others thandrinking coffee or tea is ok and that the words of wisdom are wrong in itsteachings. That doesnt become a matter of drinking coffee, but faith itself.

Mormons follow what is known as “the Word of Wisdom” . It’s essentially a health code that codifies early 19th century health advice as a revelation. The way it has been enforced and interpreted has shifted dramatically over time within each sect.
With regards to coffee vs. soda, the WoW prohibits “hot drinks”. When the revelation was first presented, that was meant to mean that you shouldn’t drink anything hot enough to scald. Within a decade, Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith’s brother, reinterpreted “hot drinks” as “coffee and tea”. Various other interpretations came and went over the next few decades, including a prohibition against anything even mildly warm, to hot chocolate, to soups, to anything that had been previously boiled .

Although it was first only a recommendation, it was made a commandment later on. This gave the saints time to adjust to the new principles. Originally, abiding by the recommendations and prohibitions of the Word of Wisdom was not considered mandatory: it explicitly declares itself to be “not by commandment or constraint”. In February 1834, however, Joseph Smith proposed a resolution before the high council of the church that stated, “No official member in this Church is worthy to hold an office after having the word of wisdom properly taught him; and he, the official member, neglecting to comply with and obey it.” This resolution was accepted unanimously by the council.
In 1842, Smith’s brother Hyrum, who was the Assistant President of the Church and its presiding patriarch, provided an interpretation of the Word of Wisdom’s proscription of “hot drinks”:
And again “hot drinks are not for the body, or belly;” there are many who wonder what this can mean; whether it refers to tea, or coffee, or not. I say it does refer to tea, and coffee.
According to a book written by LDS missionary and hymnographer Joel H. Johnson in 1881, Joseph Smith shared Hyrum’s interpretation:
I understand that some of the people are excusing themselves in using tea and coffee, because the Lord only said “hot drinks” in the revelation of the Word of Wisdom …. Tea and coffee … are what the Lord meant when He said “hot drinks”.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has clarified its position on caffeinated soft drinks, noting the news media often incorrectly states that its members are forbidden to drink caffeine.
This week the church posted a statement on its website saying it does not prohibit the use of caffeine.
A day later, the website wording was changed, saying only that the church revelation spelling out health practices does not mention the use of caffeine.
Church spokesman Scott Trotter said the clarification was made to provide context to last weeks NBC News hour-long special on Mormonism that stated Mormons dont drink caffeine.
But church leaders say that doesnt mean they view caffeinated drinks as healthy. They just dont bar members from drinking them.
Even LDS presidential nominee Mitt Romney has been seen drinking an occasional soft drink, and Mormon missionaries in France routinely drink them, too.
Several earlier LDS leaders considered drinking caffeinated soft drinks as a violation of the spirit of the Word of Wisdom.
It was dictated in 1833 by Mormon founder Joseph Smith, and bars consumption of wine, strong drinks with alcohol, tobacco and hot drinks, which have been defined by church authorities as tea and coffee.
The churchs website posting Wednesday reaffirmed that the faiths health-code reference to hot drinks does not go beyond tea and coffee.
