In separate studies, UC San Francisco researchers examined the effects of two widely consumed beverages coffee and alcohol on irregular heartbeat.

Caffeinated coffee has been associated with a lower risk of cancer, diabetes, Parkinsons disease and overall mortality. Without much evidence, it is also assumed to heighten the chance of arrythmias. UCSF cardiologist and electrophysiologist Gregory Marcus, MD, and a team of researchers set out to test this assumption. In the largest prospective cohort study of its kind, they utilized data from more than 380,000 participants aged 40 to 69 from a large databank of health and genetic information in the U.K. Participants, slightly more women than men, were grouped into eight categories based on how much coffee they drank, with a median of two cups a day. They were also genotyped for variations in caffeine metabolism.

Stress test didn’t show short-term changes after coffee drinking

MONDAY, Oct. 17, 2016 — Contrary to common belief, coffee doesn’t seem to increase the risk of irregular heartbeats in people with heart failure, according to a small Brazilian study.

“Our data reassures that most patients with heart disease might drink moderate doses of caffeine-rich beverages with no major risks,” said lead researcher Dr. Luis Rohde. He’s from the division of cardiology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre.

Caffeine-rich beverages have long been suspected of causing several heart-related symptoms, such as palpitations or rapid or irregular heartbeats, Rohde said.

“Because of this assumption, counseling to reduce or avoid caffeine consumption is still widely recommended in clinical practice by most physicians for patients with any heart disease,” he said.

But Rohde’s team found no link between caffeine and abnormal heartbeats in the short term. “In fact, our results challenge the perception that patients with heart disease and at risk for arrhythmias should avoid or limit caffeine intake,” he said.

Heart failure occurs when the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.

The study included 51 people with heart failure. The researchers randomly assigned them to two groups. One group was given decaffeinated coffee that contained 100 milligrams of caffeine powder. The other group received decaffeinated coffee with a milk powder.

Coffee And Atrial Fibrillation Risk

In the June 2016 issue of the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology, researchers published a large study asking this specific question: Does drinking coffee increase risk for atrial fibrillation?

The study included 57,053 people from Denmark who completed a survey about the foods they ate and were then followed, on average, for 13.5 years. Study participants were between ages 50 and 64 we see atrial fibrillation in 2 to 5 percent of this age group. Approximately 25 percent of the people studied had high blood pressure, and nearly 50 percent had elevated cholesterol. The study population was compared by their average intake of coffee in cups per day: none, less than 1 cup, 1 cup, 2 to 3 cups, 4 to 5 cups, 6 to 7 cups, or more than 7 cups. Coffee drinkers were compared with people who didnt drink coffee to determine the incidence of the abnormal heart rhythm.

The number of people per 100 who developed atrial fibrillation in each group was:

  • Less than 1 cup per day: 0.88
  • 1 cup per day: 0.86
  • 2 to 3 cups per day: 0.84
  • 4 to 5 cups per day: 0.79
  • 6 to 7 cups per day: 0.79
  • More than 7 cups/day: 0.79

A significant and interesting trend was that the more coffee people drank each day, the lower their risk of developing atrial fibrillation.

Things To Avoid Eating With Arrhythmia

Normally, your heart beats between 60 and 100 times a minute. Eating specific foods or drinking certain beverages can raise your heart rate to above 100, creating a feeling that your heart is fluttering, racing or skipping a beat.

  • Too much caffeine. One or two cups of coffee a day is probably fine. There are even studies that show there are health benefits of caffeine. Dont overdo it, though too much caffeine can raise your blood pressure and your heart rate. Watch out for energy drinks that have mega doses of the stimulant.
  • Alcohol. Heavy drinking can cause damage to your heart cells and cause extra heartbeats. The good news is that your heart may return to normal if you stop drinking. If having a glass of wine with dinner is part of your everyday routine, its okay to continue as long as its not causing palpitations.
  • Tyramine. Tyramine is an amino acid that can affect blood pressure. Aged cheese like parmesan and gorgonzola, soy sauce, sauerkraut and salami are full of tyramine.

    Is Caffeine Safe Protective For Patients With Afib Arrhythmias


    Some caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea may be safe and may reduce the frequency of arrhythmias, according to a state-of-the-art-review published April 16 in JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology.

    Aleksandr Voskoboinik, MBBS, et al., analyzed multiple population-based studies to determine an association between caffeine intake and its effects on atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. The studies consistently showed a decrease in atrial fibrillation with an increase in caffeine ingestion, with one meta-analysis of 228,465 participants showing AFib frequency decreasing by 6 percent in regular coffee drinkers, and a further analysis of 115,993 patients showing a 13 percent risk reduction.

    The authors found that caffeine does not appear to increase the likelihood of ventricular arrhythmia. In addition, caffeine doses up to 500 mg daily did not increase the severity or rate of ventricular arrhythmias. A randomized study of 103 post-MI patients who received an average of 353 mg/day resulted in improved heart rate and no significant arrhythmias. Only two studies showed an increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias, in which patients ingested at least 10 cups and nine cups per day, respectively. According to the authors, energy drinks should be avoided by patients with pre-existing heart conditions. Three quarters of patients with pre-existing heart conditions who consumed two or more energy drinks per day reported palpitations within 24 hours.
