When You Dont Want Half And Half

When I published my first video about How to Make a Healthy Powdered Coffee Creamer, I was thrilled with how popular it was. But the one request that I received over and over was: How do I make a Keto version of this? Thats a great question! And the good news is that its quite easy to do.

To make a powdered coffee creamer thats Keto friendly, you cant use powdered milk. You cant even use a combination of powdered milk and powdered cream.

Can I Make Low Calorie Coffee Creamer

Love sneaking in healthy fats but dont want to drink too many calories in butter coffee? Dont settle for black coffee just because you didnt have a low calorie option!

Try cutting this creamer with some unsweetened nut milk or a little bit of store bought collagen. Creamer doesnt have to be boring and adding in some collagen will help to bump up the protein in your creamer options.

Per serving of this creamer there are about 100 calories but if you cut it with almond milk youll lower the fat and overall calories.

Just make sure to not use extra butter or coconut oil and make it bulletproof if you want a lower calorie drink. Oils rack up your total calories fast!

Can You Have Coffee Creamer On Keto

Most coffee creamers are high in sugar and processed ingredients like Vegetable Oil, Dipotassium Phosphate, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Cellulose Gel, Cellulose Gum, Carrageenan. Store-bought creams, also can be full of sugar and unnecessary thickening agents, so why not make your own at home!

One serving of Coffee Mate comes in at 5g of net carbs, all from sugar. A few tablespoons of creamer can put you at 15g of carbs before youve even had your breakfast, which is why we dont recommend standard coffee creamer on a keto diet. Opt for homemade keto coffee creamer like the recipe below, or stick to heavy whipping cream and liquid stevia. Even half and half isnt the best option on keto.

Is Regular Coffee Creamer Allowed On The Keto Diet

Homemade Keto Creamer

I would like to know if regular coffee creamers are allowed on ketogenic diets? I ask this because I’ve heard people claiming that coffee creamers can kick a person out of ketosis. I went to a calorie calculator website and it says that 2 teaspoons of regular coffee creamer only has about 20 calories, and 2 grams of carbsHere is the link with the nutrition information on coffee creamer

Personally I just use heavy cream with my coffee every day. It’s cheap and calorie dense. But if creamer has that few carbs, then it probably won’t kick you out of ketosis.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Yeah that’s what I thought. In that link of a calorie calculator website I posted, it says that regular coffee creamers have about 10 calories per teaspoon. And about 2 grams of carbohydrates. I have lots of Nestle coffee creamer, and I was about to throw it away. Reason : Contains Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

When going keto, the goal is high-fat content and low carbs. Unfortunately, not all fats have the same positive effects on your body.

While oils are a high-fat staple in many keto diets, there is a big difference between oils made from natural, healthy fat sources versus oils made from genetically modified seeds that are heavily processed.

The hydrogenated vegetable oil in this coffee creamer comes from Coconut and/or Palm Kernel and/or Soybean. These oils contain artificial trans fat which should always be avoided for those on keto, as artificial trans fat offers none of the keto health benefits that natural fats do.

Some alternative options to hydrogenated vegetable oils include oils from natural fat-sources, such as:

    • Grass-fed butter
    • Walnut oil

    Coffee And The Keto Diet

Needless to say, Americans love coffee. The National Coffee Association reports that 70% of Americans drink coffee every week 62% drink it every day, with the average coffee drinker consuming a little more than three cups a day.

Black coffee is a healthy beverage, too, ideal for ketogenic diets: zero calories and zero carbs. Drinking three cups a day or more is right in keeping with the low-carb mandates of keto and paleo.

Heres the potential problem, though. A YouGov poll found that well over one-third of coffee drinkers take cream or milk in their coffee. That number soars to more than two-thirds when you include sugar or sweeteners to the list of coffee additives. Sugar can add way too many carbs to a low-carb diet, and as weve already mentioned, artificial sweeteners are also a bad choice for ketogenic eating.

What about milk and cream? Are they OK on keto?

    Are Regular Coffee Creamers Ok

The main problem with regular commercially available coffee creamers is that the quality and ingredients vary drastically.

From Dunkinâ Donuts extra sugar-filled creamer to zero-calorie Walden Farms creamer .

When talking about keto friendly coffee creamers there are 2 main factors to consider: carb content and artificial additives.

The problem with most regular coffee creamers is that they are heavily processed and loaded with added sugar.

Popular products can contain up to 5 grams of added sugar per serving. Thatâs more than a teaspoon of sugar. Thats crazy!

Another part of the equation is the common additives that are used to boost the taste and texture of the creamers.

Most of which can cause different side-effects like gastrointestinal and immune system problems .

    What about sugar-free options?

Well, if the creamer does not have any carbs, meaning, drinking it will not result in out of ketosis and itâs not filled with additives, then who am I to say what you cannot consume it?

Even products with fillers, additivities, and artificial flavors â at the end of the day itâs a judgment call if you choose to put these things into your body or not.

I suggest using naturally-derived sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit over artificial sweeteners any time.

Superfood Vanilla Spice Keto Coffee Creamer (1 Carb) | A Keto Coffee Creamer from Health Coach Tara

Heres another bulletproof coffee recipe, this time using cocoa powder to give it a mocha taste.

As I mentioned before, youll absolutely need a blender to make bulletproof coffee. A frother wont work, and neither will a whisk.

However, adding hot liquids to a blender has its hazards, such as the steam that gets trapped inside.

Pressure can build up and cause the lid to pop off, or in some cases, if the blender is cheaper, the plastic can crack .

So, be careful when blending hot coffee, and always let it cool for a few minutes first.

Plant-based, healthy fats, marine algae mineral complex

Named for surfer and fitness guru Laird Hamilton, this plant-based creamer has all four types of MCTs and no artificial sweeteners. This particular formula is best for keto because it has no added sugar and lots of clean, wholesome fats in the form of coconut oil and coconut milk powder. Be sure you take a long sniff when you first open the bagthe powder has a beautiful scent of fresh coconut meat and tastes like a lightly-sweetened macaron on its own. It also contains Aquamin, a multi-mineral complex made up of 72 trace minerals sourced from marine algae. The bag says you should froth or shake the powder to combine with your beverage. We frothed ours after adding the creamer to hot coffee and were impressed that it was totally clump-free. The coconut aroma held its own while the flavor was mild and fresh. In terms of bang for your buck, each bag contains 38 suggested servings, which is more than many others we tested that range from about 12 to 30 servings per container. Its gluten-, dairy- and soy-free, vegan, non-GMO, keto and paleo. Whats not to like? Add it to coffee, tea, smoothies and food for a boost of energy.

    Vegetarianism Vs Low Carb

    Hi Dr. Fung,

Some of my friends are vegetarian/vegan followers, although they do not oppose fasting. I understand that theres an intersection between low carb and vegetarian, however, logically speaking, its unlikely that both diets prevent, revert metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. I think the key is to lower insulin and feel satisfied with your meals. Certainly, you can eat a high vegetable diet and still have low insulin. You can also eat a low vegetable diet and have low insulin. The question is which will you enjoy more and feel more satisfied with? that is a personal decision.
