What Does Pastel Silver Look Like
On the Overtone website, Pastel Silver looks like a beautiful, hip, silvery gray. At least on the models and influencers they show. What they almost never tell you is that those people have bleached hair to begin with. Their hair is a blank slate when applying Overtone.
For the rest of us, its either going to add a tone to your hair, or its going to add some coloring, if you have naturally or chemically lightened hair.
I wasnt looking for the silver. I was just looking to take my yellow blond and turn it more into an ash color and was pretty confident the Pastel Silver would do that.
Saying Goodbye To Your Overtone Hair Color
All good things must come to an end. In this case, its your hair color. It is not meant to be a permanent color but I dont think it would be completely fair to say its a temporary color. It will leave some color residue in your hair, even if you cant see it . And it is more likely to leave residue in lighter, more porous hair.
So what do you do if you want it gone?
The easiest thing is to simply shampoo. A lot. The Overtone site recommends using clarifying shampoo. I used a Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo and made sure I followed up with a hydrating conditioner. This will help strip and fade your temporary color. And for an extra boost, rinse in hot water.
The Overtone site also suggests using Vitamin C in your hair if youre really in a hurry to get the color out. I bought this Vitamin C powder and mixed it into my shampoo when I was desperate to get the orange color out of my hair. I thought it had a horrible smell and dried out my hair. And it didnt make much of a difference so I didnt use it again.
It eventually faded back to close to a normal color. If you still have a hint of the shade youre trying to get rid of, you might want to use one of the Overtone Daily Conditioners. Since youre trying to neutralize the color and not preserve it, this time, youd want to choose a shade opposite your current color.
For example, when I was trying to get the orange out of my hair, I purchased the Overtone Pastel Blue Daily Conditioner, which helped with the overall tone.

How Long Does Overtone Pastel Silver Last
Because its a subtle shade, it also has a subtle fade. After about two weeks, I decided it was time to reapply. But not because the color was completely gone. It was because I was hoping to simply refresh my look.
I recommend repplying the coloring conditioner every two weeks . And in between, you can use the Overtone Pastel Silver Daily Conditioner. Its a lightly tinted conditioner that can help keep your color fresh.
Personally, I dont love their conditioners so I only use it every other shampoo and usually mix it with a little regular conditioner.

While I didnt have luck with Overtone Vibrant Silver color conditioner, I havent given up on my quest for silver hair at home. If I find something that works then Ill update the post with a very brief description.

After The Overtone: A Cautionary Tale
When I started my color experiment last November, I planned to tone it a bit until it was time for my twice annual highlighting. I hated the color I chose and decided to experiment a bit. I moved to the Rose Gold for Brown and loved it! I tried the Pastel Purple and didnt love it. And then I decided to go for the pièce de resistance. I wanted purple hair.
I purchased the Purple for Brown Hair when it was finally back in stock and loved it for the full three applications I got out of the coloring conditioner jar.
As my state was starting to open up, I got an appointment with my hairdresser for a long overdue cut and color. I followed all of the steps above to get the color out of my hair. Three weeks after my last Overtone application, I visited my stylist.
I explained my color journey to her, showed off a few pictures, and we both agreed that my hair looked mostly back to normal .
When she applied the bleach, everything seemed to be going swimmingly. And then she checked it and found out my hair was turning PINK! Apparently my virgin hair had held onto the color and it was bleeding through the bleach.
She applied some additional bleach, being careful not to damage my hair. Once she rinsed it, she applied a toner in, you guessed it, green! The idea was to neutralize the pink.

This stuff is seriously pigmented, so make sure to have a hair coloring brush, disposable gloves, Vaseline, a T-shirt you wont miss if ruined, and maybe some newspaper to protect your bathroom: Use the Vaseline around your hairline and your ears to avoid staining your skin I have skipped this step before, but I always regret it.
After I’d let the color sit for 15 minutes and a long rinse in the shower , I could see that, even with wet hair, my strands had a noticeably purple hue all over. The color got even brighter and more vibrant after blow drying .

I’ve reached out 6 or more times and it’s been less than a week the only response I’m getting is our team received your email duhhh I know that. I’m constantly requesting a return ticket to no avail. Would I Recommend Overtone
I definitely dont recommend Vibrant Silver from Overtone. It just didnt work in my experience. But I might still recommend other Overtone colors. It just depends on the person and the situation.
For example:
- I mentioned using the Purple for Brown Hair on my son and it worked great. I think Overtone is perfect for introducing color to kids hair because it wont damage their hair and is a healthier solution. It also washes out eventually which is nice for kids.
- People with short hair could get a lot more uses out of one tub of color so the price point might be worth it for them to have a healthier hair dye.
- People wanting to try a bold color for the first time might really enjoy using Overtone as well. Katie has talked about dye her hair black but shes worried about messing up her red hair. Overtone could be the perfect solution for her.
Basically, my recommendation isnt a solid one and depends on the situation. Im happy to answer questions as best I can in the comments section if you have them. Ive only ever used the Purple for Brown Hair and Vibrant Silver. Because of the price, I dont plan on trying any other colors at this time so keep that in mind.

Overtone Vibrant Silver Review
Its been years since I dyed my hair. I like to grow my hair out and then cut it short to donate it. While some donation places do take dyed hair, its less common. So, I went with my natural color for years.
Now, Ive got a good amount of white hair coming in so I figured its time to have some fun with my hair colors again. I love the silver trend thats been going on and thought Id give it a try but wasnt sure where to start.
I dont usually spend much money on my hair and knew a salon would charge a ton. Plus, I dont want to have to go back to the salon for regular maintenance because that would really add up cost wise.
A QUICK SIDE NOTE: Some professional stylists will probably come at me in the comments section of this post. If you have the money and a stylist you trust then of course they are the best option for getting the color you want. Silver is a tough color so its hard to do at home.
Heres the thing though, not everyone can afford a stylist to color their hair but they still deserve to have the hair color they want, or at least close to it, at home. This Overtone review is coming from that stand point. Because they ship to homes, they are expecting this product to work for non-professionals.
