The Keys To Great French Press Coffee

How to make a French Press Coffee at Home

If you’re new to the French press, you may end up with a slightly bitter or oily batch if you don’t do your homework. Typically, you can find what went wrong by examining to two commonly overlooked factors: water temperature and poorly ground coffee.

Lukewarm water or boiling hot water may fail to extract all the flavor or scorch your grounds. Luckily this fix is a cinch just let your boiling water sit for a minute before brewing.

When it comes to your grounds, it’s critical to grind your own. Typical store-bought coffee grounds are made for a conventional drip coffee machine. French press coffee requires even, coarsely ground beans that are relatively large. Anything too small will slip through the filter and land straight in your cup. Consider a burr grinder to avoid sediment at the bottom of your cup or ask your local coffee shop to grind your beans.

What Is The French Press Method

Heres how many coffee lovers get the most from their favorite grounds in a simple manner.

All it requires is a glassor sometimes aluminiumjug with a mesh filter and plunger that firmly fits inside and can be pushed down.

You can let your coffee brew for a while and then push down the grounds and pour yourself a cup.

How To Make French Press Coffee

Ive said many times before, and Ill say it again. The best place to begin with any kind of coffee is withgood coffee. As in, good beans.

Buy good ones. Buy them whole. And then for French press, grind them immediately before using them to a coarse ground. They should be about the consistency of breadcrumbs.

Then measure out the amount of coffee you would like to use. Everyone has different opinions here about their preferred coffee-to-water ratio. I like to weigh my beans before grinding them, and use 52 grams per 4 cups of water. But if you dont have a scale, that is the equivalent of about 1/2 cup of beans before they are ground. So for different sizes of French presses, that would mean:

  • 8 cup* French press = 4 cups of water = 1/2 cup whole beans
  • 4 cup French press = 2 cups of water = 1/4 cup whole beans
  • 2 cup French press = 1 cup of water = 2 tablespoons whole beans
  • 1 cup French press = 1/2 cup of water = 1 tablespoon whole beans

*Again, dont get confused by the cups thing. If you purchase a French press that says its an 8-cup French press, that means it will hold about 4 cups of water, and thus produce 8 servings.

The first step is to heat your water to boiling. Once it reaches a boil, pull it off the heat and let it rest for 45 seconds. Ideally you want the water to be 195 degrees F, but I never measure.

Wait 1 full minute for the coffee to puff up and bloom.

Once the total 4 minutes are up, gently push the plunger down until it firmly reaches the bottom.

Blade Vs Burr Vs Manual Grinder For French Press Coffee

The key to brewing a great cup of French press coffee is consistency, and if your little grinds are not all the same size, some will be over-extracted, some will be under-extracted, and the result will be dull bitter coffee.

Blade Grinders

Although they are less expensive and widely available, blade Grinders really arent grinders at all. They are basically a coffee processor.

The blade inside the unit doesnt cut the coffee beans, instead, the blade basically whirls around really fast, slinging the beans all over the chamber, busting the beans to pieces.

This process creates a mix of boulders and fines. This leads to uneven extraction and hurts the flavor of your brewed coffee.

Also, blade coffee grinders can only work by spinning extremely fast, which causes heat and friction. This heat and friction mean your coffee is already heating up so it wont taste as fresh and the end result will be overcooked coffee.

Needless to say, blade grinders are not the best option to grind coffee for your French press.

Burr Grinders

Burr grinders are the best grinders for grinding coffee for all brewing methods, including the French press.

Burr grinders really do grind the coffee beans. They grind beans between two burred plates. The plates, or burrs, are flat in some models and conical in others. One plate remains stationary, while the other spins around.

A good example of a burr grinder with all of these qualities, and at a reasonable price, is the Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder.

By Step On How To Make French Press Coffee For One At Home Every Single Time

How To Make French Press Coffee |

I hesitated to purchase a French press for the longest time because it seemed intimidating & too fussy for just a cup of coffee. Turns out I was wrong this whole time and I regret not getting it sooner. Oh well – you brew & learn. I am not a coffee snob or anything but a good cup of joe makes me really happy especially on the weekends. Lately, I have been religiously brewing my coffee using my French press & thought I’d share a step by step tutorial for just one because sometimes you want to brew a cup for yourself and call it a day. I did some research on how to use a French press with some notes.

French press is a brewing device with a plunger and metal mesh filter that makes really good coffee at home. It is also referred as cafetière, cafetière à piston, Cafeteria, press pot, coffee press, or coffee plunger depending on where you are located. There is a debate as to where it actually originated French vs. Italian although the first ever patent was done by an Italian designer in 1929.

The brewing method is pretty straightforward – pour ground coffee, hot water, let it steep and done! While it’s not rocket science, it’s nevertheless important to follow and understand some key steps.

A blade grinder, which is like a blender will grind coffee beans but the end result is not very consistent and the blender may overheat which could alter the taste of coffee. However, you can have better control of the grind by using 1-2 tablespoon of coffee beans at a time in pulse setting.

Why Do You Have To Grind Coffee Beans

Coffee beans need to be ground in order to break the beans surface to increase the surface area coming into contact with water. This also releases coffee beans aromas and flavors. When hot water passes over the grounds it captures oils, aromas, and flavors, transferring them to the brewed coffee.

Coffee beans have a very hard surface and a wood-like structure. Due to the beans form, water alone cannot adequately extract the coffees flavor. The roasted surface of the coffee bean acts almost like a shell protecting the coffees natural oils.

When coffee is ground, the beans surface is broken up exposing more surface area inside of the bean. This process unlocks the coffee beans smell, taste, etc. This is why a quality grinder is important to the end result. A good grinder produces more of a uniform particle size allowing the coffee to extract evenly.

Aim for a temperature of around 200°F . But dont bother breaking out a thermometer it doesnt have to be rocket science.

When ordering coffee you may wonder which coffee beans have the most caffeine.

There are basically two types of coffee beans: arabica and robusta.

Arabica has less caffeine than robusta, its more popular, and in my opinion a better choice because of flavor. And because too much caffeine can lead to health problems.
