Size Of The Crowd: How Many Cups To Brew

How to make cold brew coffee(and what ratios you can use)

Whether youre brewing coffee for yourself or a group, you want your coffee to last. Accurate brewing matters, and its essential to get it right, whether youre making one personal cup or enough for the whole office. Its crucial to note that coffee pot measurements might not reflect actual coffee cup measurements.

  • 1 person: 2 cups or pot
  • 2 people: 4 cups or pot
  • 4 people: 8 cups or pot
  • 6 people: 12 cups or one pot

A standard US cup has eight fluid ounces, but a standard cup of coffee has six fluid ounces. Your coffee pot is designed for coffee, so the ounces in a pot of coffee are based on coffee cups.

If youve ever asked yourself, what do the numbers on a coffee pot mean?, its showing you the fluid ounces in the pot. Its important to know how many fluid ounces are in your coffee pot before measuring out the number of scoops you will need.

French Press Cold Brew Coffee Recipe

How to make cold brew coffee with a french press:

  • Measure out your medium to coarse grounds at a 1:4 or 1:5 coffee to water ratio in your french press. For example, 1 cup of ground coffee to 4 cups of filtered cold or room temperature water.
  • Stir the coffee in the water making sure they are thoroughly wet.
  • Set to brew. Put the cover on the french press . If you dont have room for the plunger to be extended you can cover the french press with plastic-wrap and set it in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours. Or if you dont have space in the fridge you can leave it on the counter for between 14-18 hours.
  • Plunge. When its ready, remove the plastic-wrap and plunge as you normally would when making regular french press coffee. See tips below.
  • Enjoy! Pour the concentrate into another container, cover, and store in the fridge. This cold brew concentrate can be served diluted with water or milk. Its usually diluted with a one to one ratio but you can experiment and do what suits you best.
  • Helpful Tip: If you dont like sediment in your coffee it may be good to do a second filter when making french press cold brew. I find that after plunging the grounds I have to run the cold brew through a paper filter. I have a Chemex so I just set that up and run the cold brew through the Chemex filter.

The following video will show how to make cold brew coffee at home using a french press. Tap water is used in the video but I recommend filtered water.

    How To Serve Cold Brew

After letting your cold brew steep, you strain it and then youll have cold brew concentrate! Play around with how much water you need to dilute it based on how strong you like your coffee. I recommend using equal parts coffee concentrate to water so I would do a cup of ice with 1/2 cup cold brew concentrate with 1/2 cup of cold water. If you want your coffee a bit stronger Id do 3/4 cup cold brew concentrate with 1/4 cup water. Add milk, cream and sugar to your liking and enjoy!

Like I mentioned earlier, you can serve this warm or cold. If you want a warm cup of coffee simply add hot water or milk to the concentrate or pop your cup in the microwave.

Depending on how you like to drink your coffee, the type of coffee will vary. Here are a few examples:

    • Floral Notes: African coffee is lower in acidity and provides a pleasant and citrusy flavor with undertones of berry and jasmine, which are enjoyable without any additives.
    • Chocolate Notes: If you prefer your coffee with milk, cream, or a chocolatey richness to your drink, then choose a more suitable medium roast coffee from Latin origins.
    • Spicy Notes: Dark roast Asian and pacific coffee beans offer a more profound flavor with notes of vanilla and chili these are most suited for coffees mixed in rich cream or condensed milk.

If you love to drink cold brew black, then the best coffee beans you can find from Africa are the most preferable choice to use for your cold brew concentrate.

    Common Cold Brew Questions

What is Special About Cold Brew Coffee?

It is less acidic. Cold brew coffee is more than 67 percent less acidic compared to hot brewed coffee. Its sweeter and softer because coffee grounds arent exposed to high temperatures, cold brew coffee is generally more delicious and less harsh.

Is Cold Brew Stronger Than Regular Coffee?

Cold brew coffee is often brewed with a greater coffee to water ratio of two to two and a half times greater which means it is sharper than coffee produced with a more traditional coffee to water ratio.

Can I Warm Up Cold Brew Coffee?

Yes, cold brew coffee may be heated, because it is typically concentrated, pouring hot water just warms it up and waters down the concentrate to make it more like a standard cup of coffee. You may change the amount of hot water you use to customize the intensity of your hot coffee.

Do you need a Specific Coffee For Cold Brew?

Begin with a high-quality coffee bean to produce the greatest cold brew. A thick grind fits brilliantly and helps filtration. Instead of buying pre-ground coffee, buy whole beans and grind them yourself. Keep in mind, youre drinking coffee in its purest state so investing in the beans is worthwhile.

How To Brew Great Coffee Every Time

Coffee is such a universal and versatile drink that there are really plenty of ways to brew coffee, but a few elements will always remain the same.

Aside from using the correct amount of coffee, you can consider these the laws of coffee brewing:

    • Use freshly roasted beans. I cant repeat this enough times. Once youve tasted coffee made from freshly roasted beans, youll never be able to drink pre-packaged supermarket coffee again.
    • Grind freshly roasted beans just before brewing. Grinding just before brewing ensures that most of the flavors remain trapped in the coffee bean, only exposing them just before you brew. Once you grind coffee beans, they lose most of their flavor in a very short time. Use an automatic or manual burr grinder to get your ground coffee.
    • Use the correct water temperature. If your water is too hot, you risk burning your coffee. If its too cold, you wont get enough flavor extraction. You need to brew at the perfect temperature which is around 90 to 95 degrees C.

Iced Coffee Is Not Cold Brew & Vice Versa

As you know, cold brew coffee is different from standard iced coffees since we make it with cold or room-temperature water. The coffee grounds are never touched by hot water, giving them a very distinct flavor and character.

When making iced coffee, you still use boiling water to brew the coffee. Then you’ll quickly chill it, resulting in a diluted and often bitter tasting iced coffee. In my opinion, iced coffee is a terrible compromise when you have cold brew available.

Even more, what if you don’t want to pay the high cost of a cold brew coffee at a coffee shop every time you need a caffeine fix?

If you make your cold brew coffee at home with the right grounds to water ratio, you will still get the buzz you want. The caffeine you get in your regular cup of coffee that keeps you going all day may leave you with a harsh effect on your stomach.

Still, you won’t experience stomach pains from a cold brew. Let’s explore what cold brew is a little more before we get to the ratios. You can also click on the table of contents button to skip, if you prefer.

    What Is Cold Brew Coffee

The term cold brew refers to how the coffee is made, not the temperature of the coffee when it is served. Cold brew coffee is brewed over a long period of time either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Cold brew coffee then can either be served chilled over ice or warm like traditional coffee.

    Filter Coffees Water Ratio

In general, soaking coffee requires a coarse grind and a lengthier brew duration.

There is some variation in appropriate grind amounts and brew periods for drip or pour over. Immersion and drip need far more water and significantly more coffee!

For instance, you may see 1:15 or 1:18. Youll want less coffee with immersion than with pour over.

Can You Use Regular Coffee Beans To Make Cold Brew

Yes, you can use regular coffee beans to make cold brew, so your favorite coffee is a great place to start! However, we recommend using coarse ground coffee beans. If you use regular or finely ground coffee beans, you’ll wind up with a bit of thick, gritty sludge at the bottom of your cold brew jar. While this isn’t the end of the world, it definitely isn’t the tastiest when you reach the end of the jar. Using finely ground coffee also makes the process just slightly more difficult.

How do you find coarsely ground coffee beans? Here are 3 options:

  • Buy them already coarsely ground. While this option may not be widely available at your local grocery store, you can often find coarsely ground beans on by searching for coarse grind coffee beans’ or cold brew coffee beans.’ You can also check your local coffee roaster, who may be able to grind the beans for you!
  • Grind them yourself. Your next option is grinding the beans yourself. If you are very particular about your coffee, or like one specific brand, this may be your best bet. Luckily, coffee grinders are easy to use and you don’t need an expensive one! Look for one in the $20-$30 range like this one.

How Long Does Cold Brew Last Unrefrigerated

Cold brew lasts about two weeks when kept in the fridge and about a week when it is left out. When kept in the fridge, it will taste just as good after one week of storage. After two weeks the flavor will have worsened but it will still be safe to drink.

Likewise, when it is stored on the counter it will lose its flavor over the course of a week but will still be safe to drink.

Cold Brew Vs Cold Drip Whats The Difference

    Lets clear up some confusion.

Often, when people talk about cold drip, theyre referring to the fancy glass towers by brands like Yama & Hario that look a bit like a drug lab. In these devices, cold water drips through the grounds over a number of hours into a glass vessel at the bottom.

While they look cool Im not a big fan.

Why? To be honest, I just dont think I tastes very good. The finished product is often under-extracted, watery and just generallyflavourless.

Cold Brew on the other hand, typically refers to devices where the coffee grounds are fully immersed in cold water. Yes, Ill admit these devices are unlikely to end up on a foodies Instagram feed but they can deliver cold-brew that is simple to make, cheap & genuinely tasty when its done well.

I also enjoy mine with milk which is another reason why I like to brew for longer.

Why Is Cold Brew Less Acidic

Fact: Cold brew coffee is much gentler on your stomach than regular hot coffee.

Studies have proven that cold brew coffee is up to 65% less acidic than a regular cup of joe.

Many people actually avoid a daily cup of coffee because of the acidity and digestion problems. Perhaps they have stomach issues, like an ulcer. While there are less acidic coffee products on the market, they dont really taste as good as a real organic, fair-traded cup of joe. If you are wondering whether drinking coffee is healthy, check out our post.

Cold brewing coffee actually works to reduce the acidity without taking away from the flavor. In fact, brewing coffee in cold water enhances the flavor. Since hot water isnt used to brew cold coffee, the natural oils in the beans that create more acidity cant permeate into the mixture.
