Mixing The Perfect Cup Of Cold Brew At Home

Cold brew concentrate isnt really a finished product you probably wont want to drink it straight. You can mix it with any variety of creamers and sweeteners to craft a cup of coffee that suits your tastes. Ill give you two suggestions.

If you want cold brew that tastes exactly like what you would get at a Starbucks coffee shop, the key is to add more filtered water before drinking it. Somewhere between a 2:1 and a 1:1 concentrate-to-water ratio should taste like what they serve at the store. Add whatever milk or sweetener you like , and serve over ice.

Personally, I think diluting strong cold brew with water is absolutely criminal. My preferred cup is 2 parts cold brew concentrate, plus 1 part vanilla soymilk. I add sucralose to taste and serve over ice. Try it!

If you like sucralose instead of sugar like me, you can save a ton of money by buying liquid sucralose concentrate instead of Splenda packets. Just a couple of droplets pack a punch, so use this stuff conservatively.

Vanilla soymilk is good no matter which kind you buy. A lot of times I just get the Great Value brand from Walmart to save money. But if you like almond milk, thats a very different story. Regular, store-bought almond milk is too thin and watery for coffee. Try out a barista blend almond milk its much better, but beware that its more expensive.

Flavoured Syrup Or Simple Syrup

You can use any flavoured syrup to make the Starbucks boba drink. Some of the favourite syrups for the Starbucks blended ice drinks are caramel, chocolate, vanilla and Starbucks brown sugar syrup.

But, of course, you can always omit the syrup and add one more tablespoon of simple syrup instead for a straight coffee flavour.

To make the simple syrup, combine and heat up 1 cup of sugar and water in a saucepan until all the sugar is dissolved and the liquid is smooth. Once dissolved, set aside to use later.

You can store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 month. You can also adjust the quantities to make more or less syrup per your requirements.

Lets talk caffeine. After all, caffeine is a big reason many of us grab a cup of coffee in the first place.

As a matter of fact, cold brew makes the list of Starbucks most caffeinated drinks.

However, have you ever noticed that nitro cold brew drinks have more caffeine than regular cold brew? Theres a simple reason for this.

Cold brew is served with ice, nitro cold brew is not. In fact, ice would disturb the foamy head and break up the tiny nitrogen bubbles. Not to mention, the nitrogen gas chills down the cold brew.

Anyway, no ice means more coffee in the cup. More coffee means more caffeine. Its as simple as that.

Lets face it. As college students, most of us wouldnt be here today if it werent for the power of a good cup of coffee. Hot or iced, black or with cream, many of us have turned to coffee at least a few times in our collegiate careers to write those last few paragraphs or memorize those last few elements.

While there are plenty of great and effective ways to brew that neat little bean, none are as unique as the elusive cold brew. Once limited to small hipster coffee shops because it takes 12+ hours to brew in small batches, this tasty sensation is catching our eye and finally getting the attention it deserves. As Starbucks stores across the country are launching cold brew as a new beverage option, its easy to make and customize your own version at home.

The mechanics of making coffee are pretty simple. Grind the beans and add hot water, where the hot water then soaks into the grinds and extracts the caffeine and flavors of the bean. The grinds are then filtered out, and we can drink our coffee and go about our merry, caffeinated ways. With cold brew, the idea is that the heat is replaced with time- instead of brewing with hot water and achieving instant gratification, cold brew uses cold or room temperature water, so the process takes longer.

Strength Vs Extraction : How Does Starbucks Brew Coffee

Until recent decades, coffee was coffee. We approached coffee with the same logic kids eat candy. For kids, if candy is sweet – they eat it. Sugar? Done!

So did the majority of coffee drinkers qualify the cup: “If it’s black and strong, great!” The worlds most recognizable coffee brand understood this and built an empire while ensuring that every cup of their coffee was stronger and blacker than all others on the market.

How did Starbucks achieve this? That’s Lesson 008:100 – BREWING. This is not an article about Starbucks but rather about how hot water turns black and transforms your moment. This content will also provide the framework for serious coffee students interested in pursuing further study into Extraction Science, SCA Certifications and more.

  • What is coffee? Coffee is a fruit that grows on a small tree. We identify the two main species as Arabica and Robusta. The fruit and growing conditions of both differ dramatically.
  • Coffee as a commodity travels further and goes through more changes than many other agricultural goods. After coffee cherries are picked, two symmetric seeds are extracted from the fruit, dried and then eventually roasted to be brewed. It is a long process to getting coffee from distant equatorial mountain farms to the final drink served in downtown London, Seattle, or Melbourne.

Top It With Cold Foam

Cold foam is perhaps the most popular way to enjoy cold brew coffee with milk.

In a nutshell, Starbucks cold foam is a cloud of blended milk thats layered on top of cold brew. Cold foam can be made from any type of milk , but vanilla sweet cream cold foam, almondmilk cold foam and oatmilk cold foam are popular selections.

But would it be Starbucks if we stopped there? Of course not. Cold foam can be topped with sprinkles of cinnamon, cocoa powder and more.

Experiment With Different Brewing Methods

There is no one way to make coffee, as evidenced by the hundreds of coffee makers available for purchase. You can get a very good cup of coffee from a modestly priced coffee pot, or you can try other methods like a French Press, the pour over method or a Chemex. Its an almost universal belief that coffee made from the coarse grounds used in a French Press yields the most superior cup of coffee. Its rich, bold and very flavorful. If you like to make your coffee one cup at a time, give the pour over method a try. A Chemex works similarly, and you cant beat its beautiful glass construction that makes you feel fancy just using it.

Grind & Brewing Techniques

There is no such thing as making coffee one way only. There are three main ways Starbucks brews their coffee. Each brewing method requires a different type of coffee grind. You should experiment and choose the brewing method that best suits you.

  • Coffee press is the most recommended method by coffee enthusiast, and for good reason. Its believed that using a coffee press brews the most flavorful cup of coffee, that stays true to its bean flavor profile. This method requires a coarse grind.
  • The traditional coffee drip is a well-known method. Its by far the most convenient since its automated and programmable. Often times, its as simple as a push of a button. This brewing method allows you to make multiple cups of coffee in a single brew and requires a medium grind.
  • Pour over is one of the less known methods but gives you the option to make your brew iced or hot. Unfortunately, only one single cup of coffee can be made at a time, but the end results make it worth it. This method requires a fine grind.
