Roll Up The Rim To Win Campaign
Each February, Tim Hortons holds a marketing campaign called Roll Up the Rim to Win. As of 2007, over 31 million prizes were distributed each year, including cars, televisions, and store products. Customers determine if they have won prizes by unrolling the rim on their paper cups when they have finished their drink, revealing the result underneath. Prizes are not distributed randomly country-wide each of the company’s distribution regions has distinct prize-winning odds. The idea for the campaign began in 1985 when Roger Wilson of one of Tim Hortons’ supplier of cups, Lily Cup company, approached Tim Hortons with a new idea to increase their sales. Wilson explained his company had created a new cup design that allowed a message to be printed under the rim the cup type cost no more than the current one and could enable a promotion or contest. Recognizing the opportunity to promote coffee in the normally weak sales period in the spring, the Roll Up the Rim to Win campaign was first held in 1986 when the biggest prize was a snack box of Timbits. In 2008, over 88% of major prizes were redeemed.

Merger With Burger King
On August 24, 2014, American fast-food chain Burger King announced that it was in negotiations to merge with Tim Hortons Inc the proposed $18 billion mergers would involve a tax inversion into Canada, with a new holding company majority-owned by 3G Capital, and the remaining shares in the company held by current Burger King and Tim Hortons shareholders. A Tim Hortons representative stated that the proposed merger would allow Tim Hortons to leverage Burger King’s resources for international growth the two chains would retain separate operations post-merger. News of the proposal caused Tim Hortons’ shares to increase in value by 28 percent.
Former CEO Marc Caira reassured the integrity of Tim Hortons following the purchase, stating that the acquisition would “enable us to move more quickly and efficiently to bring Tim Hortons iconic Canadian brand to a new global customer base.” On October 30, 2014, various media covered a Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives study which suggested that Burger King’s proposed takeover of Tim Hortons is “likely to have overwhelmingly negative consequences for Canadians.” This study analysed Burger King’s private equity owner, 3G Capital, and past takeovers of Burger King, Heinz, and Anheuser-Busch, and declared that “it has a 30-year history of aggressive cost cutting, which could hurt Tim Hortons employees, small-businesspeople, Canadian taxpayers, and consumers.”

The chain’s first store opened on May 17, 1964, in Hamilton, Ontario, under the name “Tim Horton Donuts” the name was later abbreviated to “Tim Horton’s” and then changed to “Tim Hortons” without the possessiveapostrophe. The business was founded by Tim Horton, who played in the National Hockey League, from 1949 until his death in an auto crash in 1974. Horton had an initial venture in hamburger restaurants.

You Can Now Order Ahead At Tim Hortons Using Your Iphone With Apple Pay
Canadian coffee and donut chain Tim Hortons today launched a revamped app that enables customers to order and pay ahead of time with Apple Pay. Customers can also add a credit card or TimCard manually and pay by scanning an in-app barcode.
The app enables customers to choose their preferred Tim Hortons location and pick-up method. Payment is completed within the app, so customers can grab their orders to go at the counter or drive-thru, or dine in at the restaurant.
The minimum reload amount in the Tim Hortons app is set at the default of $10, but can be set at increments of $10, $25, $50, or $100, in both Canadian or U.S. dollars. Tim Horton’s app FAQ outlines more details.
Tim Hortons locations will have new “Mobile Pickup” signage displayed at counters to inform customers where to pick up their mobile orders, enabling them to skip the line, according to the blog iPhone in Canada.
The new Tim Hortons app replaces the company’s old TimmyMe app with limited TimCard barcode functionality. Tim Hortons says customers can seamlessly transfer their TimmyMe funds for use in the new app.

Tim Hortons China To Open Coffee Shops In Metro’s China Stores
BEIJING – The Chinese arm of Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons said on Monday it has signed a deal with Metro China to open coffee shops in the retailer’s stores, as it banks on rising coffee consumption in the world’s most populous country.
Tims China said the first batch of seven Tims Go coffee shops, a compact-store model with delivery services, opened on Monday at Metro China stores in four cities. It eventually aims to expand the partnership to 60 cities.
Metro China, a joint venture of Wumart and Metro AG, currently operates 99 stores.
The latest openings bring the store footprint for Tims China, which plans to go public next year, to over 335 stores in 20 Chinese cities, up from 137 stores at the start of the year.
“China is the fastest growing coffee market in the world,” Tims China chairman Peter Yu told Reuters.
“As of last year, Chinese per capita consumption of coffee was 5%, so one-twentieth of what it was in Japan, and one-thirtieth of what it was in Canada. So we believe there is tremendous room for us to bring and to help grow a coffee culture here.”
In August, Tims China said in an investor presentation filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects its stores in China to total more than 2,700 by 2026.
Yu said the COVID-19 pandemic had helped to drive growth in the coffee delivery business.
“So having a smaller format like Tims Go enables us to grow more rapidly,” he said.
G Capital Purchase: 2014
For all its challenges, Tim Hortons remained a premium franchise restaurant chain, regularly heralded as one of Canadas most respected brands. That attracted the attention of a Brazilian private equity firm, 3G Capital, which owned Burger King. In October 2014, Canadas federal competition bureau approved 3G Capitals takeover. The ownership change resulted in job losses: an initial 350 employees, or about 15 per cent of the companys workforce, were cut. But 3G also brought an enhanced commitment to diversifying the menu while renewing the push for American expansion. How To Order And Behave At Tim Hortons To Make The World A Better Place
Im one of those oddball Canadians who doesnt frequent Tim Hortons on a regular basisprobably because Im not a coffee drinker! I have sipped the occasional iced cappuccino, hot smoothee, or hot chocolate from Timmies, but my visits to this hallowed Canadian institution are rather infrequent.
While in New York City recently I walked past a couple small Tim Hortons restaurants that had just opened. These werent the stand-alone establishments with drive thrus were used to finding on every other street corner in Canada. These were small coffee shops sandwiched between souvenir shops, clothing stores and hotels on busy streets in Manhattan. I wondered how they would fare in the U.S. and how quickly Americans would pick up the Timmies coffee lingo.
Ordering a beverage at Tims or at just about any other coffee establishment has always held a kind of mystique for me since the world of double doubles, mocacchinos, grandes and lattes is not one I visit very often.
Luckily for me and all those Americans just being introduced to Tims, the Facebook group Tim Hortons Rules of Ordering and More has posted a comprehensive list of rules for proper behaviour and ordering at Tims. The group is for everyone who gets fed up with people who dont know what they want, and for workers who have to put up with this everyday. Apparently If people would just listen to these rules when ordering, the world will be a better place.
