Study Methods And Results

Three hundred and one adults with medically intractable epilepsy participated in a health psychology evaluation for epilepsy surgery that included demographic, health, and disease status, clinical interview concerning current and past psychological status, and self-report measures of mood, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness.

Just less than half of the 301 participants were male. Nearly one in five of the participants drank no caffeine, 31% drank less than 24 ounces per day, 45% drank between 24 and 96 ounces per day, and 3% drank 100 ounces or more per day. The researchers found that caffeine ingestion was not associated with gender, hours of nighttime sleep, level of fatigue or degree of daytime sleepiness. On the other hand, caffeine consumption was associated with regular use of nicotine and alcohol, and lack of exercise, and being employed.

Hey Guys I Used To Work At

Hey guys. I used to work at Starbucks back in 2011. I have high respect for the company and love their coffee. i lasted about 4 months before I started having seizures. I also know that upon my employment, I really took advantage of those free partner beverages. I still hang around my local store on a daily basis and typically drink about 2 venti sizes a day. In iced coffee, that’s their most caffeinated. The seizures are somewhat controlled with Keppra ER and clonazopam but I had to dig into this conversation. Secondly , I’ve also noticed the only time that my seizures will NOT be responsive to meds are when a bad storm system or cold front is moving in, having to due with barometric pressure fluctuation. As for my Starbucks intake, if i know a storm is ahead, I’ll start cutting down. Which is what I’m doing today. Down to half caffeinated.

What Are Some Common Sources Of Caffeine

Pet owners may not realize that caffeine can be harmful to their pets. They also may not know that many foods and drinks in their cupboards contain caffeine. Most people name coffee as the number one source of caffeine and they are right. Most households have coffee in the pantry, but many teas and sodas contain caffeine too. And do not forget about those energy or sports drinks in the fridge. Other common sources of caffeine are diet pills, over the counter pain medication combinations, over the counter energy boosting products, and coffee grounds.

Health Benefits Of Decaf Coffee

Despite having been demonized in the past, the truth is, coffee is mostly good for you.

Its linked with numerous health benefits, which are mainly attributed to its antioxidant content and other active substances.

However, the specific health effects of decaf coffee can be hard to determine.

This is because most studies assess coffee intake without distinguishing between regular and decaf coffee, and some dont even include decaf coffee.

Also, most of these studies are observational. They cannot prove that coffee caused the benefits, only that drinking coffee is associated with them.

Foods To Limit Or Avoid

If your doctor encourages a ketogenic diet, work with them to determine the best foods for you. In general, here are some high-carb foods to leave out of your epilepsy diet menu, per the Mayo Clinic:

  • Breads and pastas
  • Baked goods and other sweets
  • Starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn
  • Legumes
  • Most fruits, like bananas, pineapples, grapes and apples

Choose Healthy Fats

The ketogenic diet includes a lot of saturated fats, which in excess can contribute to other health problems like high cholesterol and heart disease. Prioritize healthy sources of fat by limiting your saturated fat intake to no more than 7 percent of your daily calories, according to Harvard Health Publishing.

Depending on your sex, here are the recommended amount of calories from saturated fat per day based on the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans:

  • AFAB: 126 to 168 calories
  • AMAB: 168 to 210 calories

Caffeine And Anticonvulsant Medication

Today Show – Energy drinks may cause diabetes, seizures

For individuals diagnosed with epilepsy, many take medication prescribed by their doctor to help manage seizure activity. These drugs are called anti-convulsants, and there are many variations. Researchers have been interested in what external substances affect these medications in terms of efficiency in keeping seizures away. Scientists in Poland used mice to examine the effect of acute administration of caffeine sodium benzoate on the anti-convulsant action of four widely used anti-epileptic drugs: clonazepam, ethosuximide, phenobarbital and valproate 2. They found the medications responded to caffeine in different ways, and it seemed to diminish the anti-seizure protection in ethosuximide only. They warn, based on this data, that patients treated with this medication should avoid caffeine.

What Causes Partial Onset Seizures

A variety of behaviors, lifestyle factors, and underlying medical conditions can trigger a seizure. In some cases, identifying the trigger can help you prevent future seizures. If you can identify the cause, your doctor may be able to recommend targeted treatments. Some triggers are easily controlled. Some are less so.

If you experience a seizure, make an appointment with your doctor. Take notes about each seizure that you have. Your doctor needs to know how often your seizures occur, what you did immediately before each seizure, and what you experienced during each seizure. This can help them develop a diagnosis, determine your triggers, and decide what types of treatment are best for you.

In some cases, your doctor may not be able to identify the cause of your seizure. Seizures without a cause are called idiopathic seizures. Most cases of idiopathic seizures occur in children and young adults.

Caffeine: How Much Is Good Bad For You

Whether due to early schedules or busy days, it seems many of us need caffeine to get through our days.

Caffeine consumption has exploded, with high amounts added to energy drinks, pre-workout supplements, weight-loss pills, bottled brews and energy bars and sports gels.

According to a report in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, energy drink consumption in the United States has increased substantially over the past decade among adolescents, young adults and middle-aged adults.

Though caffeine generally is safe, experts have been sounding an alarm over potential dangers associated with ingesting too much, which can lead to more than the jitters.

A 2020 study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings using data from the federal Food and Drug Administrationâs Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Adverse Event Reporting System found caffeine-containing products including supplements and energy drinks have a greater association with severe adverse events, including death, than nonâcaffeine- products. The study authors say itâs important to determine the amounts of caffeine involved.

âExcessive caffeine consumption may acutely cause caffeine intoxication, resulting in conditions including nervousness, headaches, nausea, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures and even possible death,â says Dr. John P. Higgins, a sports cardiologist at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston.

Studies On Coffee And Alzheimers Disease

Your Brain On Coffee

Several studies suggest that consuming coffee regularly over your lifetime can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimers. Check out some of the studies below.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports that EHT a fatty acid substance in coffee beans helps to protect the brains of mice against various illnesses.

The team that led the research was from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine.

The researchers also observed that when EHT was combined with caffeine, it boosted the activity of a catalyst that aids in the prevention of accumulation of various harmful proteins that are associated with Lewy body dementia and Parkinsons disease.

The researchers acknowledged the fact that more studies need to be done to determine the proper dosages of caffeine and EHT.

This will guide consumers on the best type of coffee and the number of cups that would offer the most protection.

Alcohol And Recreational Drugs

Some people with epilepsy drink alcohol and some people dont. Its up to you to decide if youre going to drink alcohol. But if you decide to drink alcohol, bear in mind that alcohol can make seizures more likely.

Drinking more than modest amounts of alcohol in 24 hours can increase the risk of having seizures. After heavy drinking, the risk is highest when the alcohol is leaving your body. This risk is usually between 6 and 48 hours after youve stopped drinking.

Epilepsy Action has more information about alcohol.

Recreational drugs include illegal drugs and legal highs. There is no control over what goes into these drugs. They can be dangerous and they can trigger seizures.

How Is Caffeine Toxicity Treated

As with all poisoning cases, early intervention is key to successful treatment. Call your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline, a 24/7 animal poison control center, at 1-800-213-6680 as soon as you realize your pet has consumed caffeine. Your pets veterenarian may induce vomiting to help remove the toxin from the system before it is absorbed and may also give activated charcoal to minimize absorption of any remaining toxin from the gastrointestinal tract.

“As with all poisoning cases, early intervention is key to successful treatment.”

Supportive therapy with intravenous fluids will prevent dehydration which may concurrently occur secondary to vomiting, diarrhea, and the diuretic effects of caffeine. Intravenous fluids can also help the body to excrete caffeine as well as support kidney function.

Medications may be needed to treat muscle tremors and seizures, lower blood pressure, and to stabilize an irregular heartbeat. For adequate treatment and observation, be prepared to have your pet stay in the hospital through the day with mild cases and possibly for a few days in severe cases.
