This fully automatic espresso machine is controlled via a color touchscreen display. The on/off button is located on the far left. Next to it are the user profiles, which are differentiated by colors and not names. Theres pink, blue, yellow, green profile color, and no color for the guest profile. The arrow and confirmation buttons are on the right side.

The top row shows six coffee drinks: espresso, coffee, Americano, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and café au lait. My mom, whos not very tech-savvy, liked that there are actual pictures of the drinks and not icons. Theres also a more drinks button, which lets you scroll for more coffee drinks.

Overall, the touchscreen gives the espresso machine a modern feel. The control panel is intuitive and easy to use, primarily thanks to the drink images.

Each user profile has individual setting options for adjusting the bean strength, volume, choosing an extra shot, and adjusting the amount of milk for milk-based drinks. The coffee bean symbol is the aroma strength, and you can choose between five levels, from strong to mild.

Cleaning & Maintain: Philips 3200

Since the design of Philips 3200 and Philips 5400 is very similar, there isnt any difference in their cleaning cycles either. Both are equipped with a rinsing process that helps clean the milk and brew path briefly after each brew and complete washing cycles for weekly and monthly maintenance.

Since the brew groups are removable, I can clean it thoroughly every week to ensure that the espresso quality is as authentic as possible. But, if you dont like washing the parts manually and frequently, you can opt for cleaning tablets or solutions, which help rinse the entire machine from grinder to dispenser automatically.

The difference lies in the alarms that tell users when to clean the products. With Philips 3200, I can directly see the descale and cleaning alert on the screen, while with Philips 5400, there isnt any alert related to machine maintenance.

Espresso Taste And Quality

I was satisfied with the espresso taste and quality.

Philips 5400 is a single stainless steel boiler machine. This means one boiler is used to heat water for both brewing and steaming. You wont be able to brew and steam simultaneously, but theres not much waiting time with Philips 5400. The machine steams the milk first and pulls a shot a few seconds later.

The Philips 5400 comes with a ceramic burr grinder. I know ceramic vs. stainless steel grinder is a hot topic among coffee drinkers, but I give ceramic grinders an advantage. They grind at a lower heat, which preserves oils in your coffee beans, and makes your espresso rich and flavorful.

You can choose between 12 grinding levels on the Philips 5400, which means you can influence how strong your coffee drink will be. Overall, the 12 grinding levels meant I could always have the best grind size, no matter which beans I used.

Another thing that contributed to good espresso quality is the removable group head. It should be cleaned occasionally to remove coffee grounds deposit from it, to make sure your espresso is brewed with the freshest beans.

Final Thoughts On The Philips 5400 With Lattego

There are a lot of things to love about the Philips 5400 with LatteGo starting with the design and how user friendly it is. Besides brewing delicious drinks, it requires little maintenance and is so easy to keep clean. The drip tray, coffee grounds container and LatteGo are all dishwasher safe but are so easy to wash with a little hot soapy water that I didnt find it necessary to put them in the dishwasher. Thedesign of the bean hopper lid has a freshness seal keeping your beans fresher for a longer time and there are a pair of LED lights pointing down into your mug which means you can make your favourite drink in the dark early hours without bright overhead lights on.

My husband and I were both happy with the flavour of the coffees and I was so impressed with the temperature of the drinks and the amount of foam. Lastly, I have to mention the little waste that the Philips 5400 produces. The used coffee grounds are dispensed into the container as small round pucks that can go in your food waste bin or out back in your compost if you have one.

After testing out the Philips 5400 with LatteGo my husband and I both agree it will have to be our next coffee maker.My husband went from a medium roast coffee with a little creamguy over to a cappuccino guy within a day and Im sticking with my café lattes. Getting Started With Philips 5400

The Philips 5400 LatteGo comes in a nice cardboard box, with all the machine features listed on the front and the back.

A lot of the time, when I open the box containing my new espresso machine, theres a strong plastic smell. In some cases, the plastic smell lasts for the first several uses. Im glad to report this wasnt the case with the Philips 5400.

When you open the box, theres an extra thick corrugated cardboard box on top, which protects the machine. I prefer cardboard to foam, as its better for recycling. Below the cardboard, theres a box with a power cord, drip tray, scoop, a tube of grease, water hardness strip, and manuals. All of these are separately wrapped and cleverly packed to save space.

Next is my favorite part of Philips packaging, and something they tend to include with all of their espresso machines: the front of the machine is packed in something resembling half of a shopping bag. There are handles, so you can easily and safely lift the large body of the coffee machine out of the box. As Im often alone when I do the unboxing, this makes it very convenient and, most importantly, safe.

Theres another small cardboard box in the front of the coffee maker that contains the LatteGo milk system and AquaClean filter.

Finally, the machine itself is wrapped in a soft material thats easy to take off.

Overall, the machine is very well protected, and the unpacking is uncomplicated. Youll be ready to start setting up in no time.

First, insert all the removable parts the drip tray and the LatteGo system and plug in the machine. When you turn on the Philips 5400 for the first time, youll have to choose the language and do the water hardness test.

Enter the water hardness info in the machine settings so the coffee maker can calculate the descaling time. Next, set up the AquaClean filter.

As Philips 5400 super automatic espresso machine has an AquaClean filter, youll be able to brew 5,000 coffee cups before having to descale. So if you brew two cups of coffee a day, you wont need to descale for about seven years. This is more than impressive, and not many machines in this range have this feature.

Pro tip: Make sure to place the drip tray, or even better, place a glass under the hot water spout, as the machine will do an initial rinsing cycle when you first turn it on. I didnt do it and had to clean up afterward.
