Difference Between Iced Latte And Iced Coffee

What Are Some Other Iced Coffee Drinks

All Iced Coffee Drinks Explained: Cold Brew vs Iced Latte vs Frappe and more!

If you feel like exploring other types of coffee, you can level up your coffee experience by trying other beverages like iced macchiato, iced cappuccino, or an iced mocha.

Iced macchiato, like iced latte, uses a combination of milk, espresso, and ice, but has more espresso and less milk. It is usually served in a clear glass to show the layers of milk and espresso. Some even prefer topping the iced macchiato with a syrup to make it sweeter and to add flavor. One of the most popular is an iced caramel macchiato .

Iced cappuccino is a mixture of milk and espresso, and is topped with a milk foam. Milk foam can be created by using a simple handheld milk frother.

For those who love chocolatey drinks but also want coffee, an iced mocha is the perfect option. It is a combination of coffee, milk, and chocolate sauce. You can also top it with whipped cream for an extra treat!

Whats In An Iced Latte

Iced Latte coffee is a coffee drink made with espresso and milk, usually served cold. Iced Lattes can be flavored with syrups such as vanilla, hazelnut, or caramel. They can also be topped with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or cinnamon. Iced lattes are a popular coffee drink choice in the winter months.

Is Iced Latte Bad For You

No, its not. Based on the ingredients you use, an iced latte is actually better for your health than many other coffee drinks.

For one, an iced latte contains espresso which depending on how its prepared- is lower in caffeine than a normal cup of coffee. Most people assume that espresso has more caffeine but this is not entirely true. It may be more concentrated but as explained later in the article, this doesnt mean it has more caffeine than brewed coffee.

Why is this important? Despite the benefits of coffee that we mentioned earlier, drinking too much caffeine can have adverse health effects. Not only can it cost you your sleep but it also triggers addiction. So the smaller amount of caffeine in espresso really helps.

Another reason why we recommend iced latte is because it contains a generous amount of milk. If you use whole milk to prepare your latte, youll be getting an excellent balance of fats, proteins, and sugar.

Of course, there are those who prefer skimmed or semi-skimmed milk because of the lower fat content. But overall, adding milk to your coffee has indispensable health benefits. For your splash of milk that you might like to add to your iced coffee, you can also use any variety of milk. The difference when you look at an iced latte vs iced coffee is the amount of milk you use.

How The Two Differ In Taste

What

The two have massively different extraction times. Espresso is extracted fast, under incredibly high pressure. Cold brew can take almost a day to extract due to the lack of pressure in the process.

The cold in cold brew doesnt just mean how the drink is served, it also reflects the fact that the coffee is brewed at a cold temperature rather than at higher temperatures like espresso and other methods. Cold brewing doesnt pull out the acids or caffeine as much as hot brewing, sometimes resulting in as much as 66% less of each. As you can imagine, this affects the flavour quite a bit.

Much of the acids and solubles that carry the lighter floral and fruity notes in a coffee, as well as the undesired flavours, are only extracted at certain temperatures. This is why cold brew is touted as less acidic and easier on your stomach. On the other hand, its also why cold brew is often muted in flavour when compared to the same bean brewed as a pour over or a French press.

How Does Iced Coffee Differ From Cold Brew

While you have to wait a little bit for hot-brewed coffee to cool down, its a fraction of the time cold brew coffee takes. The main difference between iced coffee and cold brew is the brewing method.

Hot-brewed coffee uses heat to pull the flavor from those magic beans rather quickly. Some coffee pots can brew several cups in a matter of minutes. Even if you factor in a slightly longer brew time, you can take your first sip of an iced coffee in less than half an hour using the hot-brew method.

On the other hand, cold brew methods gradually extract flavor from the coffee beans. It takes at least 12 hours, though many connoisseurs recommend letting your coffee mixture sit for 18 to 24 hours for the best flavor.

Iced Cappuccino Vs Iced latte – which one is your best iced coffee
  • Brewed Coffee. This adds more coffee flavor while also making your latte nice and cold. And unlike regular ice cubes, it wont water down your drink in the process!
  • Milk. Whole milk will give you the creamiest results, but you can use any kind you prefer, including plant-based.
  • Instant Coffee. You can choose decaffeinated or caffeinated and also adjust the quantity to make it as strong as you like.
  • Sugar. Feel free to swap this with any sweetener you like- just adjust the amount for your desired taste. I often actually use stevia since its calorie-free.
  • Hot Water. This helps dissolve the sugar to make a syrup.
  • Vanilla Extract. Adds a nice bit of delicious flavor!

Iced Coffee Vs Iced Latte Caffeine

Does a latte or iced coffee have more caffeine? In short, iced coffee has more caffeine.

One big difference between iced coffee and iced lattes is the caffeine content.

Even when brewed with the same beans, espresso and regular coffee do not have the same amount of caffeine.

Espresso has a much higher caffeine content per ounce than coffee. According to the Mayo Clinic, espresso has 64 mg of caffeine per ounce. An 8-ounce cup of coffee, by comparison, has 96 mg of caffeine.

But, despite espresso being the more potent of the two, iced lattes have significantly less caffeine than iced coffee. This has to do with the coffee to milk ratio in an iced coffee or iced latte.

Iced lattes are ¾ milk, typically prepared with 2 shots of espresso. On the other hand, Iced coffee is primarily coffee with a splash of milk or cream .

To put this into perspective, a medium iced coffee fromDunkinDonuts has a whopping 297 mg of caffeine. The same size iced latte fromDunkin Donuts has 166 mg of caffeine.

If you have caffeine sensitivity and are deciding between an iced coffee or iced latte, the iced latte may be the better choice.

What Other Types Of Coffee Drinks Are There

The local coffee shop that I go to has avariety of types of coffees. As I see their menu board, I notice that thedifference between most of the different coffee drinks is the milk and theespresso.

One of my favorite coffees that I order isthe Vietnamese, which is made with condensed milk, rather than steamed milksuch as a latte. Typically, Vietnamesecoffee can be made with a French roast coffee. Also, Ive added mocha flavor to the Vietnamese but found it to be toosweet.

However, the affogato is my favorite coffeedrink during the middle of a hot afternoon. An affogato is merely a shot of hotespresso poured over vanilla ice cream. The combination of the two is even tastier than a latte or an icedcoffee. Its better than a café mochalatte!

An affogato is also very easy to make athome. All you need is 1-2 scoops ofvanilla ice cream and a shot of espresso coffee.

Additional coffee drinks that you mightwant to try are:

    • The Cortado is another coffeedrink that is also made with espresso and steamed milk, much like a Latte. However, the difference between a Cortado anda Latte is that the Cortado uses almost the same quantity of espresso tosteamed milk.
    • Turkey coffee is madedifferently than a Latte, Vietnamese, or Cortado. A Turkey coffee is made with powdered coffee, water, and sugar.
    • A cappuccino also uses espressocoffee and steamed milk no foam.
    • An espresso macchiato is madewith one shot of espresso and foamed milk.

  • Once the coffee is brewed, add the sugar and stir to dissolve.
  • Add milk to your iced coffee and stir again.

Barista Tips For The Best Iced Latte

    • Avoid pouring the espresso directly onto ice or vice-versa. Coming into immediate contact with ice will alter the flavor of espresso.
    • For a fun visual effect, pour the espresso into the glass last, using enough milk so that its surface is just above the ice. This creates a visual effect as the espresso flows down, and its akin to an iced macchiato. Stir for an even flavor or leave layered.
    • Iced lattes can be made with ristretto shots, as hot lattes or magic coffees often are.
    • If you prefer a sweeter latte, use liquid sweeteners or syrups, as granulated sugar will not dissolve in an iced latte.

A diy iced latte cant really be made ahead of time, for oxidation will quickly degrade the espressos quality even when the espresso is mixed with milk.

Which Is Healthier: Iced Coffee Or Iced Latte

The question of which is healthier can be subjective! Depending on your recipe, the amount of milk you use, the syrups and other flavorings you add, you can determine which is healthier.

But, if we simply look at a regular iced latte vs a regular iced coffee recipe, iced coffee tends to be healthier as it usually contains less milk which makes it lesser in calories. For a regular iced latte, the milk ratio is usually ¾ .

You can lessen your calorie intake by using milk options that have a lower calorie content like skim milk and almond milk. But, if you would really like to consume the least possible amount of calories, opt for iced black coffee and avoid using sweeteners.

Or, for even better iced coffee, use whiskey rocks or pre-made coffee ice cubes. Trust us, it will take your drink to an instant 10/10.

Whiskey rocks are basically reusable ice cubes. Whereas coffee cubes are where you freeze some brewed coffee in an ice cube tray to use later.

Some people will tell you to brew your coffee stronger to compensate for the melting ice. But thats just adding extra work. Use frozen coffee or re-usable whiskey rocks and never worry about overly diluted iced coffee again.
