What Is A Latte After All

How To Make Cafe Latte | Homemade Latte Without Machine | Instant Coffee Latte Recipe By Varun

Latte in itself directly translates to milk in Italian. Hence our recommendation that when in a beautiful cafe at 11am in Verona, dont bother ordering a latte unless you want a hot cup of milk only! Caffé latte is your order of choice, which highlights that you do want the espresso included! Latte, as the UK knows it, combines well steamed and frothed milk with a shot of pulled espresso. The key component is making sure the milk is looked after effectively and becomes steamed and frothy milk if its just frothy, its a macchiato. Its a lovingly simple drink on the surface, but one which requires a good understanding of its components to enjoy at its fullest!

    Ways To Brew Espresso

Infographic How to Make Espresso with an Espresso Machine

I brew my espresso with my Nespresso machine. My goodness do I loooooove this machine!!

Its a fast way to make an espresso and theres no guessing game about how much water is needed because the pods have a barcode on them. The machine reads the barcode and adds the exact amount of water that each pod requires for the espresso or coffee you choose.

    SO SIMPLE.

PRO TIP: When I brew espresso to drink straight away, I like to use these little double-walled espresso glasses. They keep the espresso hot longer when I want to drink it hot. Theyre just like the Tervis tumblers but made of glass instead of plastic.

So if I brew an espresso and then say, the dog rings his bell to go outside or Riley is running amuck through the house and I need to wrangle her, my espresso stays hot for juuust a little bit longer. And boy, Im always so thankful for this! Life happens, people!!

There are other ways to make espresso as well. An old-fashioned but still really cool stove top espresso maker works great too! I have used this stove top maker in the past but switched over to the Nespresso as my go-to when we purchased it 3+ years ago.

My mom uses still makes espresso on the stove top and its really easy to use! You just need to grind your espresso beans or buy ground espresso, add the ground espresso to the pot, add water, and brew. Otherwise, you can buy ground espresso in the grocery store or online at places like Amazon. Illy is my favorite brand of ground espresso!

Ounce for ounce, espresso contains more caffeine than coffee. One ounce of espresso contains about 63 mg caffeine. One ounce of coffee contains about 14 mg caffeine.

However, since a medium coffee contains about 12 ounces of coffee and a medium latte contains 2 shots of espresso , a medium coffee is actually stronger than a latte . Who would have thought!!

Science Break: What Makes Milk Foam So Foamy

How to Make a Latte (Caffe Latte) | Perfect Coffee

No, it isnt just shaking it up, although that helps a great deal. The actual makeup of milkcarbohydrates, proteins, and fatty acidsare the main drivers of foam capacity. Its also why using milk alternatives might give you different types of foam.

It helps to think of milk as a food more than a liquid, especially when heat is involved. Thats because milks three main components tend to coagulate in heat and burn when overheated.

When you shake up milk for froth, the addition of air disrupts the casein, a type of protein found in milk. But casein wants to stay together, so it forms a kind of shield around the air bubbles, which helps them hold their shape longer and protects them from bursting. So if you want super-foamy froth, look for milk with a higher protein content.

For quick reference, take a look at the average protein contents of milk and milk alternatives:

    • Skim milk: 3.4%
    • Soy milk: 2.7%
    • Almond milk: 0.4%

Remember, a low protein content doesnt mean bad froth it just means froth of a different character. Thats because these types of milk have different fat and carbohydrate contents, which contribute to the creaminess of your froth, which is why we love using whole milk, as well as the ability to hold foam longer.

A latte and a cappuccino are made with exactly the same ratio of coffee and milk. The only difference is in the texture of the milk. While a latte has a thick and silky mouthfeel and the espresso and milk are fully blended, a cappuccino is airier. The size of the bubbles are larger and therefore lighter thats why a cappuccino has distinct layers of foam, milk, and espresso. According to Torres, sugar rises to the top with the milk bubbles, making sweeter.

As mentioned before, you need to be mindful of the height, position, and flow when pouring your steamed milk. Here are a few tips:

Start the pour a little high until the cup is nearly half full, and then lower the pour so its close to the crema to make the foam appear.

Move from high to low and make sure to pour at a steady speed.

Hold the cup at an angle and pour steadily. Pouring too fast will break the crema apart while pouring too slow will cause the foam to be left behind.

When the cup is nearly half full, start pouring to the back of the cup, moving the pitcher from side to side using gentle wrist movement.

Steamed Milk And Frothed Milk: Whats The Difference

This can make a huge difference in the texture of your coffee. You dont want to just mix frothed milk with espresso and call it a day. While it might taste good, thats a macchiato, not a latte.

So whats the difference? Think about it like this: you can have steamed milk by itself, but you cant have froth without steamed milk. Delicate milk bubbles cant survive without heat. Frothed milk is basically the result of aerating heated milk.

    What Is A Latte

How to Make a Latte Without an Espresso Machine

A latte is a drink that is prepared with espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk. Usually, this espresso is made from dark roasted coffee beans. The process of making a latte at home is fairly simple and doesnt require any special equipment.

There are several different variations to the latte. Depending on the type of drink you are making, there could be some slight differences in the way you prepare your latte.

You can sweeten your latte using various add-ins, and adding an extra shot of espresso is done regularly. More on this later.

Can You Make A Latte With Regular Coffee

You can make delicious lattes using regular coffee if you prefer to use this. Its best to use a strong-brewed coffee for the most balanced latte. Brewing coffee with a French press is one of the brewing techniques I recommend.

Although there are multiple ways to make strong coffee, the French press has a unique coffee flavor that works great with the amount of milk used in a latte.

Because the French press is a technique where you steep the coffee ground and hot water, it creates a full-bodied flavor.

You can also use a pour over technique like Chemex or Hario V60 as the basis for your latte. If youre going to use one of these techniques, its best to use a darker roasted coffee bean.

Medium roasted and dark roasted coffee beans have a much stronger flavor, which is perfect for this recipe.

Make Coffee Latte Art: The Beginning

With regards to the history and beginnings of the latte art, there is no exact dates or exact location on where it is started. Some sources claim that it is initially developed in Italy. It is contributed to the development of espresso machines by Luigi Bezzera in Milan and patented in 1901.

Almost two decades after, the introduction of steam wand in espresso machines paved the way for cappuccinos and lattes. The earliest recorded development of latte art was in the 1980s in Seattle, Washington in the United States. David C. Schomer, the owner of the coffee shop Espresso Vivace, credits the process of microfoam to Jack Kelly in 1986. Schomer makes coffee latte art in 1989 with the heart shape, followed by the rosette pattern in 1992.
