How To Brew The Perfect Cup Of Coffee:
Traditional Drip Machine: Add one level to slightly rounded measuring tablespoon of finely ground coffee to each six ounce cup of water
Hand Drip Method: Add 8-10 grams of medium-fine ground coffee per cup. Heat water to 190-195 degrees, pre-soak grounds, slowly add water in a clockwise motion. Adjust to taste.
French Press: Add 1-2 measuring tablespoons of coarse ground coffee per cup of water and adjust to taste. Never add boiling water.
Cold Brew: Steep equal amounts of coarse ground coffee and filtered water in a covered container for 12-24 hours, strain coffee out and use cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter to remove leftover grounds. Add water to taste.

It Started Out Innocently Enough
This past week we were on our traditional once-a-month Friday evening sojourn to Costco, merrily cruising through the near-empty store . We dont impulse buy even at the grocery store because, frankly, its dangerous. Downright risky, I tell you.

Consider this a PSA for frugal weirdos: One minute youre judiciously stocking your cart with the cheapest fruit on earth and the next, theres a bag of Cheetos in your hand. Stay strong! Follow your list! Dont succumb to the temptation of maybe we need this or this might be a good price or this looks yummy, I will eat it now!
Back to our fateful Costco trip last week I was selecting cartons of organic milk when I suddenly turned around and couldnt find Mr. FW suspicious at best. I peered down the aisle and was agog to see him pawing over an item that was most certainly not on our list : coffee beans. Concerned for his mental health, I scurried to his side to investigate. To my utter shock, he suggested we buy a bag of this stuff and try it out.
How Much Do We Stand To Save
Frugality is not about a drive for perfection, its about a drive for savoring life to the fullest while spending the leastest. Were not cheap and we dont live an uncomfortable, curmudgeonly existence. But, we also dont waste money in areas that arent important to us. So just how much money are we talking about in this coffee venture?
3 lbs of Costco Coffee now belongs to us
The total wed save over the course of a year by switching to the Costco brand is: $214.11. In a year, wed spend $416.52 on the expensive beans vs. $202.41 on the Costco version .
While this isnt an earth-shattering amount, it also aint nothing. The key is that these savings are coupled with all of our other extreme frugality savings mechanisms. When I take into account the amounts we save by not buying clothes, by eating $0.10 breakfasts, by not paying to board Frugal Hound, by doing our own house work/repairs/renovations, and so much more, the total savings climb to tens of thousands of dollars.
This coffee undertaking represents a mere $214.11 of that total, but it all adds up. We all have our sacred cows of spending that we cant fathom not paying for. But what happens if we put those cows on the proverbial chopping block? Doing this has been an amazing experience and weve been shocked to discover how painless, and liberating, it is to give up these tertiary things in our lives. Everybody needs to find peace in their lives through one vehicle or another, and for us, its frugality.

The Science Of Coffee Making With Whole Bean Coffee
Getting the grind right is important with whole bean coffee. The more finely the coffee is ground, the larger the surface area exposed to water. That means it will need to brew for less time to extract the coffee. Over-brewed and over-heated coffee gets bitter quickly, and if you don’t take sugar in your coffee can be quite unpleasant to drink.
The brewing method you use dictates grind size. You’ll want extra coarse coffee for cold brew coffee, while percolators and French presses require a coarse grind. Solo and Chemex brewers do best with medium-coarse, freshly ground beans. Flat-bottomed drip coffee makers and pour over methods work well with a medium grind, but go for medium fine if your drip has a cone-shaped filter or you’re using a Moka pot or a pour-over cone. Espresso machines need finely ground coffee, and Turkish coffee is made with extra finely ground beans.
Extra coarse grinds look like small pebbles, while coarse should be the size of coarse sea salt. Medium grind has a similar texture to coarse sand, while fine feels like sugar. Extra fine feels just a little grittier than powdered sugar, while Turkish grind feels like flour.
Whole bean coffee consistently ground and brewed produces consistent flavor. The delicate oils contained within the coffee beans add flavor and aroma. Try to use your freshly ground whole coffee beans within 15 minutes of grinding, because they lose 60 percent of their aroma in that time.
