What Happens When You Roast Coffee Beans

Every type of coffee has a unique chemical reaction, but Giuliano says a skilled roaster knows how to coax a roast along and, more importantly, when to stop to get exactly the flavors they are looking for. Its a skill that only comes with practice.

The reasons are pretty simple here. For starters, its far more fiscally responsible for you to buy your own green coffee beans. They are usually less expensive than roasted coffee beans.

You can roast as much or as little coffee as youd like, but Ive found 60-75 grams is the sweet spot for these smaller popcorn poppers. If you try to roast too many beans, it gets harder for the air from the popcorn popper to circulate the beans and get an even roast.
Begin roasting the coffee.
Pour the green beans into the popcorn popper and turn it on. The entire roast process will take 4-10 minutes from beginning to end. As the coffee begins to roast, I like to gently shake the popcorn popper to help the beans circulate more evenly. As the beans roast they become less dense, so the circulation happens without any intervention.Remember: the popcorn popper will get very hot during the roasting process, so be sure to use some sort of protective equipment if it starts to get too hot.
Listen for the first crack.
As the coffee begins to roast and darken in color, listen carefully for cracking noises. It will sound similar to popcorn popping and should happen around 3-5 minutes into the roast. You can choose to complete your roasting anytime after first crack. Keep a close eye on the beans through the popper to see their color and find the roast level that matches your preferences best.

So there are 4 different types of coffee roasting that can be done at home, all with their own pros and cons, lets have a brief overview.

They are pretty self-explanatory. Pan roasting is roasting in a pan, usually a cast iron skillet. Oven roasting is roasting beans in the oven, and so on. While all of these are valid roasting methods, the one Ill show you today is how to roast coffee beans in a pan, which is my favorite method besides using an actual coffee roaster.
So whats wrong with the other options? Well, oven roasting coffee beans produces far too much smoke for me. While pan roasting produces smoke as well, if your room is well ventilated you should be fine. But when you roast beans in the oven, that smoke builds up and can be overpowering when you try to take them out.
The popcorn machine method, which I see often on the web, is a joke in my opinion. While you can get success with this method, I think its just too dangerous and not cost effective. There is too much chance of starting a fire, as well as the fact that eventually you will break your popcorn machine after a couple of months of roasting.
But surely the best method is using a purpose built coffee roaster, right? Right! However, theyre either so damn expensive, or ridiculously difficult to use.
So, unfortunately, there is no cheap and easy method. Well other than buying beans that have already been roasted.
