How to make Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate

The alternate is to make a ready-to-drink product straight out of the brewer 1 part coffee to 15 parts water . The finished brew using this recipe has similarities to filter coffee in taste and texture, highlighting more of the nuances found in more delicate coffees.

This works great if youre only planning to serve it black, or with small amounts of milk however it doesnt allow many other serving options. Also, if youre used to drinking heavy, espresso-based coffees, you might find the body too light for your tastes using this recipe.

Stick With A Specific Brewing Ratio

Making cold brew coffee usually results in a coffee concentrate. The typical recipe has you make extra-strong cold brew that you dilute with water.

For this to work, youre going to want to find a brewing ratio you like and stick with it.

For example, in our JavaPresse Ultimate Guide, we use a 1:7 brewing ratio with 100g of coffee and 700g of water. This means our final cold brew concentrate is going to be a little more than x2 as strong as your typical hot coffee .

Of course, you can really brew to any strength as long as you stick to it for consistencys sake. 1:5? No problem. 1:3? Go ahead!

Now heres the important part: you need to know how strong your concentrate is relative to your goal. Like I said, our 1:7 ratio is just slightly over x2 as concentrated as the goal. But a 1:5 ratiothats nearly x3 as strong.

If you need to, write this number downyoure going to need it when its time to dilute.

How Do I Make Cold Brew Coffee At Home

Making cold brew coffee couldnt be easier. First, grind your coffee beans directly before brewing. Use a coarse grind like you would for French press coffee. Add water to the coffee grounds and allow the mixture to steep overnight, for 12 to 24 hours. During this slow extraction, the coffee will slowly infuse into the filtered water, resulting in a concentrated and strong coffee. Strain the mixture the following day and youre ready to enjoy cold brew coffee without heading to Starbucks.

    Cold Brew Versus Iced Coffee

Iced coffee is coffee brewed with hot water but cold – usually chilled with ice.

For those who dont know, cold brew is a method that uses cold or room temperature water to brew coffee. It takes longer than using hot water: while iced coffee is ready within minutes, cold brew will take 12 to 20 hours to be ready, so you need to make this in advance.

Also, iced coffee tastes like your regular coffee but chilled and more diluted because of the ice used to make it cold. Cold brew has a different, smoother taste, and is both less acidic and bitter.

How Much Cold Brew Should I Drink

As you can see from the caffeine content of the cold brew concentrate, its best to stick with one or two cups of cold brew a day. Up to 400 mg of caffeine is a good number for most adults, so it might not be best to go over this limit.

As the cold brew concentrate has a ton of caffeine but is diluted before drinking, it is safe to drink one cup of cold brew coffee a day. You can also drink two, but youll have reached the limit for that day.

For me, its not worth it to finish my amount of caffeine in just a few hours with just two coffees. I like to drink one cup of cold brew coffee a day and then add some regular hot coffee divided throughout the day.

This works amazing when youve got a tough day ahead and want to stay focused the whole workday and not feel the caffeines adverse effect.

    Foodhow To Make Iced Coffee

Making Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate Easy And Budget Friendly!

Since you’re heating the coffee when making iced coffee and cold brewing doesn’t require any heat, the chemical process by which the water is flavored is different, resulting in beverages that can taste totally different even when using the same beans.

When brewing coffee using hot water, the coffee solubles are pulled out of the grounds quicker, which leads to a more acidic tasting and bitter brew. This process also causes oxidation and degrades the flavor of the coffee quicker, which is why hot coffee should be drunk the day its made and will not keep fresh for long.

When cold brewing, coffee solubles are pulled out more slowly, creating a mellower, smoother beverage. Since there is much less oxidation, you can keep concentrated cold brew in your fridge for up to two weeks and it will stay fresh.

The only slight downside to making cold brew coffee is that it’s not an instant process, so you do need to plan ahead if you want to enjoy this popular drink at home.

Whats the best coffee for cold brew? Dark roast coffee. Light and medium roast is great for drip or pour over coffee, but cold brew tastes the best with dark roast coffee. Is It Stronger Than Regular Coffee

The feeling that you have that cold brew has more caffeine than regular coffee comes from the fact that you’re drinking a concentrate version.

Cold brew generally uses a higher coffee to water ratio than other methods. So if you drink a cup of cold brew concentrate without dissolving it, you will be drinking more caffeine than you would if having a cup of coffee.

If you dilute your cold brew, you may get even less caffeine than a regular cup of coffee.

    Basic Cold Brew Coffee Ratio

Heres the deal: This ratio is flexible. A kitchen scale will come in handy if you have one, but its not necessary. Youre making cold brew concentrate, and you can dilute the concentrate to taste once its finished.

    • Per 1 cup of water, youll need 1 ounce coarsely ground coffee. Thats about 1/4 cup whole coffee beans, which yields roughly 1/2 cup ground coffee. If youre accustomed to the metric system, 1 ounce is equal to 28 grams.
    • Youre going to end up with a little less concentrate than the amount of water you used, since some of it will be absorbed by the coffee grounds. However, youre going to dilute it with an equal amount of water, so you will be doubling your final yield. Clear as mud? I mean, coffee? Good.

How Long You Should Brew It

Although Starbucks claims they brew their cold brew for over 20 hours, I would not recommend more than 18 hours if you’re doing it at home.

I get the best outcome when brewing between 14 to 16 hours. More than 20 hours never worked for me, and sometimes over 18 hours lead my cold brew to an unpleasant whiskey taste.

If its your first time doing it, I would recommend between 14 and 16 hours.

If you’re brewing on your counter instead than in your fridge, I would not go over 12 hours. Longer might give your cold brew some unpleasant off-tastes.

    Coffee Concentrate Vs Cold Brew

How to Make Starbucks Cold Brew Coffee at Home (Concentrate Recipe)

Literally, cold brew concentrate and cold brew are pretty identical, but one is a more compelling brew than another! Both are run through the cold brewing process soaking coffee grounds in water for a long period of time, and filtering to have the resulting brew.

The process isnt as fast as hot brewing, but you get a stronger, more satisfying iced coffee. Hot brewing brings out some of the caffeine and flavor from your coffee, and cold brew is made with a higher ratio of coffee to water to achieve the same results.

However, your best bet is cold brew coffee concentrate, for the strongest possible brew. Cold brew is richer in caffeine content and has more flavor than a traditional cold brew, meaning its more concentrated. This is why its best served mixed with water.

Achieving a higher concentration, more potent brew with a similar cold brewing process is the key difference the difference is the ratio of a greater quantity of coffee to that of water the cold brew concentration ratio!

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee Without A Cold Brew Coffee Maker

If you don’t have a dedicated cold brew coffee concentrate maker, you can mix everything in a big container to allow the coffee to brew. You’ll then need to pour the cold brew coffee concentrate through a filter when it’s ready.

For example, you can set it up using a v60 coffee brewer if you have one. Alternatively, many recipes will suggest using a French press coffee brewer.

I don’t recommend either of these methods because as mentioned earlier, when you pour out the coffee concentrate because you agitate the coffee grounds and risk releasing bitter compounds into your coffee.

Additionally, with the French press, the filter typically does not catch all the coffee grounds, so you end up with cold brew coffee that doesn’t taste as clean .

So, it is definitely worth investing in a proper cold brew coffee maker!

You’ll be able to make fresh cold brew coffee at home easily and you’ll save money by not needing to buy store-bought cold brew again – either in concentrate form from the grocery store, or from a coffee shop.

Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew Copycat Starbucks Drink

The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew is a Starbucks fall drink that I love. I am actually a fan of all pumpkin coffee drinks that you can find virtually anywhere, starting from the end of August and the beginning of September. This beverage, in particular, is very flavorful, yummy, and at the same time easy to make, so I decided to share its recipe.

So heres my take on the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew recipe.

Youre going to need the following ingredients:

    • Pumpkin Spice
    • 1 teaspoon. Its actually made by mixing 2 parts ground cinnamon, 1 part ground ginger, 1 part allspice, 1 part ground cloves, and 1 part ground nutmeg.

    • Pumpkin puree 1 tablespoon to 2 tablespoons
    • Heavy Whipping Cream 1 fl. oz. .
    • Vanilla Syrup 1 to 2 tablespoons. Again, I use Monins Vanilla syrup which you can find on Amazon here.
    • Cold brew concentrate 2 fl. oz. or 3 fl. oz. .
    • Water 2 fl. oz. . By the way, I use filtered water to dilute my cold brew concentrate. My tap water is not too hard and the Brita filter pitcher removes all the chlorine odors from the water. This does improve a drinks taste. This may not be as noticeable when you have a coffee beverage such as the Pumpkin Cream Cold brew. Nevertheless, I usually have my coffee black, so the type of water I use for brewing does have an impact on my cups flavor. What Are The Benefits Of Cold Brew Coffee

The super-slow infusion involved with cold brew coffee means youll draw all the flavor and aroma out of the coffee beans. This also helps ensure that cold brew has plenty of caffeine, making it the ideal morning eye-opener. The prolonged extraction time also leaves behind many of the compounds that cause sourness and bitterness in coffee, giving you a richer and smoother finish. By tweaking the ratio of the concentration, you can get your iced coffee just the way you like it. Unlike iced coffee, you wont find the taste weak and diluted either.
