The Best Iced Coffee Everusing An Aeropress

I have a deep and abiding love for great coffee. But historically I havent had a lot of iced coffee. One here or there, but it wasnt a habit. Until the last six months of being at home due to coronavirus, when all the sudden I became a total master at making iced coffee at home using my Aeropress.

And I somewhat accidentally discovered my hack for the best iced coffee everusing sweetened condensed milk. Now its not like Im the first person to ever think of that .

But I had some sweetened condensed milk sitting in my fridge from making a delicious bourbon milk punch cocktail, and wasnt sure what to do with it. On a whim I decided to use it instead of simple syrup, and realized that it added a lovely rich velvety quality, enough sweetness, and didnt water down the end result like milk does.

A long, long time ago I posted about the Pioneer Womans cold brew iced coffee recipe, and hadnt really tried anything else until this Aeropress style. It tasted fine enough but not amazing, and was kind of a pain to make, so I just never ended up doing it often.

Just as I was about the publish this post, I found this article on Epicurious that explains why cold brew *doesnt* give you the best tasting iced coffee, and it finally made sense to me. It creates a more deadened, kind of stale flavor, uses way more coffee beans, and gets oxidized over time.

What Is The Difference Between Cold Brew Coffee Vs Iced Coffee

For one, the brewing methods are different. Iced coffee is brewed coffee that is then poured over ice. Cold brew coffee is made by steeping coarse-ground coffee in cold water for at least 12 hours. Unlike brewed coffee, the cold brew method uses time instead of heat to extract the coffee from the grounds. Cold brew coffee can be kept in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks, unlike brewed coffee, which only lasts a few days. Cold brew coffee is also less acidic than brewed coffee and therefore kinder to your stomach.

HOW TO MAKE QUICK AND EASY ICED COFFEE

Like any cup of joe, you should choose high-quality coffee beans to make the coffee for your iced coffee recipe. I swear this is not a plug for Lavazza but I love their dark roast coffee. You can buy the beans on their own and grind them using a coffee grinder at home, or you can buy pre-ground coffee your local grocery store. It’s up to you!

I will often try to go to my fave local cafes as well and buy their house blends, or pick up some coffee from Starbucks. That way you get the same taste of your favorite coffee place without having to spend $5 per drink!

What Makes Iced Coffee So Special

Did you know that every morning, rain or shine, sleet or snow, I drink iced coffee?!

It’s my absolute favourite way to wake up there’s something so refreshing about a big tall glass of slightly sweetened iced coffee, but the same old thing can get boring so I’m here to bring you outside your routine to try a few new spins on everyone’s fave summer drink.

I’m convinced iced coffee is better than hot coffee because it’s kind of like a dessert in a glass: add in your ice, your coffee, a splash of flavoured syrup and dairy milk of choice. It’s an amazing combination worth trying, and it’s SO easy to do at home!

Tools For Making Cold Brew

It took me some time to find the best containers to make my cold brew. I like to use wide mouth mason jars because they are easy to pour from when its time to strain the coffee. You can also put the lid on and gently shake the jar to mix the water and coffee grounds together.

You can fit 3 cups of water in a quart size mason jar, which is perfect for steeping 3/4 cup of ground coffee beans. I usually make double that amount, using two mason jars.

Some of the water will be absorbed by the coffee grounds, so 3 cups of water and 3/4 cup of coffee yields me about 2 cups of coffee concentrate. Remember, youll probably want to dilute your coffee concentrate with some water when you serve it.

Another good option is to combine the coffee and water in a large French press or large liquid measuring cup, since both have a spout for pouring.

How Do You Make Iced Coffee?

It’s easy, really. All you need is a tall glass filled with ice, brewed coffee and some vanilla syrup . Mix it all up and there you have it! A decadent glass of homemade, no-fuss iced coffee.

If you really feel like pushing the boat out, you could make it using a shaker. Chuck all your ingredients in and shake, like a cocktail. Think of it like a non-alcoholic espresso martini!

Whats The Difference Between Iced Coffee And Cold Brew?

Iced coffee is, well, icedcoffee. It’s as simple as serving regularly brewed coffee over a glass full of ice. But if you want to get a little more technical, Lynsey says, Iced coffee is made with espresso thats brewed for around 25 seconds.

Cold brew is a little less straightforward and requires a lot more time. Rather than simply serving regularly brewed coffee over ice, cold brew involves leaving course ground coffee steeped in cold water for a minimum of 12 hours.

The longer the coffee sits, the stronger the flavour.

Lynsey describes cold brew, as a concentrate, that you dilute with whatever you want milk, water or tonic.

How Do You Make Iced Coffee

Youll need a tall glass and a spoon long enough to reach the bottom of that glass.

Fill that glass full to the rim with ice. If you really want to get serious about your iced coffee, you can make ice cubes out of coffee too. Then you wont get that watered-down effect. And if youre into that flavored sort of coffee then go for it.

Pour room temperature coffee into the glass.

Fill it almost to the top.

Pour in the white stuff. Heres where you get to make a big decision. Do you want to go all out and make this a decadent treat? If so, then add cream or half & half. If you want to go a little lighter, use whole milk or fat-free half & half. And lighter still, use nonfat milk.

Take a moment to watch the swirls sink to the bottom and mix in with the coffee. Its a magical moment. ð

Add a couple spoonfuls of sugar or whatever sort of sweetener you usually add to your coffee. In the recipe notes below, I share how to make sugary simple syrup in case you prefer to use that instead of granulated white sugar.

Stir it all up!

Add a purple straw. If youre a straw person, that is. And drink up!

The Best Iced Coffee Ever Im Serious

I never drank coffee until 2 summers ago. Just wasnt my thang. Then I saw a recipe for Iced Coffee Concentrate and somehow I thought that would be yummy to try? I didnt want to waste Marius good Organic, Fair Trade, Kicking Horse Coffee for it , so I stole some of my stepdads Kirkland as he had recently stopped drinking coffee and it was just sitting around.

Next thing we knew, my sister Molly and I were sluggin back quart jars of iced coffee like it aint no thang.

The only problemwas that I was 5 months and Molly 7 months pregnant. Ya know, the time when youre supposed to cut down or stop drinking coffee? We started. My Mom sat by and watched, until All went Wrong with Hamish in Utero and she called an intervention. Obviously the coffee didnt CAUSE it, but I needed to eat for optimum fetal health and coffee wasnt included in that.

Fast forward to the next summernow we both had a small baby and a toddler and guess what got picked back up again? Iced coffee. Never in earnest, just one here or there.

This summer? Ohhhhh this summer. Im not quite sure what started the coffee drinkingcould have been the movethe miscarriage right before the movethe stressI started drinking iced coffee on a regular basis. Probably 5/7 days. Okay, yesterday I had two. Dont shoot me.

Safe to say Ive got it down pat. Take notes, cause youll want to do this too!

Making The Iced Mocha

This chocolate iced mocha is made very similarly to the vanilla latte, and you probably already have the main ingredient at home: cocoa powder! Make the simple syrup from the Vanilla recipe above, mix in a tablespoon of cocoa, and youre good to go. Start with an empty cup full of ice, pour your espresso shots overtop, mix in some milk and some chocolate syrup. Super easy!

If you really want to take this iced mocha over the top, you could also use chocolate milk, or even add in a little mint extract to make it an iced peppermint mocha. Amazing combo right?! There are so many ways to get creative with iced coffee!

Will you be trying any of these iced coffee recipes? Which flavour syrup is your favourite?

Remember That Ice Is An Ingredient

In fact, its one of the only ingredients. And if youre an absolute purist , its one of only two ingredients in iced coffeethat is, coffee and water. The solid-state H2O that goes into your brew can actually have a make-or-break effect on your finished drink, though. So definitely use good, drinkable water and ice cube trays that are clean and dont smell. Also, be sure you have a fresh freezer. If youve got last months lentil soup in there, your iced coffee will taste like last months lentil soup.

I love a totally pristine, clear cube in mine, because its something so simple to elevate the glass. Every coffee should feel like a special occasion, you know what I mean? Get the Perfect Ice recipe.
