Nespresso Vertuo Plus Review: Performance
I have always held a distrust of pod coffee makers, having only really interacted with cheaper models. The Nespresso Vertuo Plus changed all that, with an undeniably tasty cup brewed with elegance time after time. This is some of the smoothest coffee I’ve been able to produce in my own kitchen, with a rich flavor and silky texture that I haven’t come across in an at-home brewer before.
That smoothness stems from the unique centrifusion brewing technique employed here. While it does take a little longer than standard pump machines, it’s spending that time producing a far better cup of coffee. Plus, the whole process still only takes around two minutes from start to finish.
This machine does favor those who prefer black coffee, as larger Alto sizes certainly don’t leave too much room for milk and the aforementioned lack of a built-in steamer means you’ll be relying on separate purchases for specialty drinks. However, if you do prefer your coffee pure, the Vertuo Plus does a good job of maintaining individual flavor notes, even if they’re not quite as pronounced as a more premium espresso machine.

Though VertuoPlus Deluxe is costly, the machine did not seem to benefit me, as a consumer, more than a regular Nespresso Vertuo in a material way. Selling between high $$$ and low $$$$ price ranges, I estimate Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe to be a mediocre proposition in the market. I like Nespresso Vertuo much better. Its less expensive, and offers nearly the same feature set.
Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe sells anywhere between mid-$$$ to high-$$$$ price point. The price depends on the manufacturer . In my opinion, Nespresso caused a lot of confusion around its 3 models: Nespresso Vertuo, Nespresso Vertuo Plus, and Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe .
The machines sell at different prices, but they appear to be virtually the same. They come with a slightly different design and sizes. However, the core features remain the same.

The Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe has a few stand-out features that make it the best Vertuo machine for almost all capsule coffee lovers. Ill cover most of them below, but you can find the full details in my Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe review.
First, it has a huge 60-ounce water tank. Thats enough hot water to make 44 shots of espresso or 7 mug-sized coffees between refills. The machines used capsule compartment holds about 10 mug-sized capsules, so the cleanup process between tank refills is virtually non-existent: just wipe any spills.
The VertuoPlus Deluxes water tank has three adjustable positions. You can place it behind the machine or on either side. That adjustable reservoir is great if you have limited counter space, and it also offers a couple of different aesthetics for the machine.
Just like most of the other VertuoLine machines, the VertuoPlus Deluxe has five cup sizes:
- Espresso 1.35 ounces
- Alto 14 ounces
The Vertuo Next is the only VertuoLine machine with more brew size options.
The VertuoPlus Deluxe is a pretty small coffee maker, but its slightly larger than the Vertuo and Vertuo Next. When comparing sizes, though, keep in mind that the VertuoPlus Deluxe does have the adjustable water tank, something that the other models are lacking.

It extracts coffee through a patented process of centrifusion, where water and coffee are well blended together, thus yielding a strong flavor. Brewing is also limited to specific capsules and specific types of coffee drinks only. Also lacks flexibility and ownership in the coffee brewing process.
Voltage: Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe is made for 120V, and can be used in Canada and the US only.
Basket size: Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe uses VertuoLine capsules that come in 3 different sizes and can make 5 different coffee cup sizes. The machine reads the barcode on the rim of the capsule using laser technology, and automatically knows which cup size to brew.
Beverage size: An in-built laser technology detects the type of a capsule and brews an appropriate size, accordingly. The VertuoLine capsules can make 5 different coffee and espresso cup sizes:
- espresso
- mug , and
- alto .
However, these sizes can be modified and reprogrammed to fit the users desired cup size. To reprogram a certain cup size, I just need to put a capsule in the machine, press the on/off button and keep pressing until the desired coffee quantity has been poured in my cup.
The lid of the machine also needs some extra space to open, which takes an additional 2 inches in height.

What Drinks Can You Make With These Machines
There are a lot of different drinks you can make with a Nespresso machine. You can make coffee, espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, and even a Nespresso-exclusive drink called a lungo.
Whats a lungo, you ask? Nespresso lungo drinks are espresso-based drinks made by pulling double the amount of water through the dark roast coffee grounds, resulting in a light and smooth drink with a slightly sweet flavor.
The point is, theres really no limit to the kinds of authentic coffee drinks you can create with a Nespresso machine and the right type of coffee capsule. Basically, any coffee drink that you can make with a shot of espresso, you can make with your Nespresso machine. As mentioned above, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus carries a $199 / £199 MSRP, which comes in a little higher than the typical at-home pod machine. We generally see prices hovering between $159 and $179, however, and this system has dropped to $99 in the past. This is a machine that has been hit particularly hard by the growing demand on the pandemic, though, which means we haven’t spotted sub-$100 price points in a long time.
If you’re considering a purchase, it’s worth also noting that the Nespresso Vertuo Plus also has a slightly higher running cost than your standard pod brewer. The machine will only run with official Nespresso Vertuo pods, which are a little more expensive than the brand’s Original Line, and considerably pricier than Keurig K-Cups. For comparison, a single Vertuo Plus pod averages at around $1, whereas a K-Cup averages at 40 cents.
