This simple, made-overnight, chia seed pudding is perfect for those mornings when you’re feeling a little sluggish and need a pick-me-up at home or at work. Loaded with omega-3s, protein and fiber, it is also gluten-free, paleo — and vegan if you use nut milk.

Americans are drinking “more coffee than ever,” according to a March 2020 report by the National Coffee Association. The average American coffee drinker has just over three cups per day, according to the report.

For healthy adults, the FDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is “an amount not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects.” An 8-oz. cup of coffee contains around 80 to 100 mg of caffeine.

“However, there is wide variation in both how sensitive people are to the effects of caffeine and how fast they metabolize it ,” the FDA warns.

Take A Brisk Walk Outside

Mental fatigue is often confused with physical fatigue, so if you feel tired, get up and get moving outside, if you can, to take in some greenery and sunlight, Fernstrom advised.

Even a few minutes of brisk walking or stair climbing is a great energy boost after sitting in front of a screen for hours, she noted.

The Effects Of Going Meatless For A Day

Try The Stimulating Breath Technique

Also known as the Bellows Breath, this breathing exercise originally used in yoga stimulates the diaphragm and signals the body to increase alertness. While keeping your mouth closed, inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose with short, quick breaths. Do this for about 10 seconds, then breathe normally and give yourself a break, and repeat several times. Its noisy but effective.

Improve Your Sleeping Habits

How caffeine and alcohol affect your sleep | Sleeping with Science, a TED series

You might think this is a bit too on the nose, but if youre feeling tired, chances are theres something off about the way youre sleeping.

You might have insomnia if it typically takes you longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep, or if youre awake in the middle of the night for more than 30 minutes at a time a couple of nights a week . In this case, you should be evaluated by a healthcare provider, but there are other things you can do, too, to improve your sleeping behavior:

  • Avoid alcohol and food two hours before bed.
  • Sleep in a cool, dark room.
  • Avoid electronic screens one hour before bed.
  • Create a routine.

This last one is important: On average, you should get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, so fine-tuning a sleep-wake schedule can help you create a space so you can pull that off. If you go to bed each night and wake up around the same time each day, your body will start depending on that schedule, which can improve insomnia.

If youre constantly feeling tired, sleep has to be a priority, Dr. Darling stresses.

This may feel like cheating the system, but it works. If you can power nap for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, you can jumpstart your bodys battery to get you through the rest of the day. Make sure you avoid naps that are longer than 30 minutes and avoid sleeping after 3 p.m., which will throw off that sleep-wake schedule youre working on.

Coconut Water And Lime

Coconut water is lower in calories and sodium than sports drinks. It is high in potassium and is capable of quickly absorbing water in the body, and therefore it is adored by athletes. Coconut water is particularly beneficial for those who perform intense work as it supplies electrolytes and carbohydrates that offer quick energy replenishment.
