How To Make An Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

How to Make a Starbucks Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso AT HOME

This unique coffee drink really couldn’t be easier to make! You’ll find a detailed, printable recipe at the end of this post, but here’s an overview of the steps:

  • Prepare simple syrup. To make the brown sugar syrup, simply combine equal amounts of brown sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stirring constantly, cook the syrup until it’s hot and all the sugar crystals have dissolved. You don’t need to simmer or boil it. Let cool completely before using. Tip: For extra cinnamon flavor, add a cinnamon stick to the syrup as you cook it. Let the syrup cool, then remove the stick before using.
  • Combine espresso and syrup. Brew the espresso using your preferred method , then mix it with 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of syrup in a cocktail shaker. I prefer to use 1 ½ tablespoons, but if you like sweeter drinks, then use 2 tablespoons. Tip: Stirring these two ingredients together before adding the ice, will cool down the espresso, which makes the finished drink less watery.
  • Fill shaker with ice and shake. After you’ve stirred the espresso and syrup together, fill the shaker half-full with ice. Then, shake the ingredients together for about 10 to 15 seconds. If you have single-walled shaker, like mine, the outside will be cold and covered with condensation . Tip: Don’t skimp on the ice … the less you use, the more watered down your drink will be.
  • That’s really all there is to it! Simple, right?

    No Espresso Machine No Problem

Many people dont have an espresso machine at home, but that doesnt mean they have to skip this Starbucks copycat recipe. The most straightforward solution is to make this recipe using a premium coffee, like Veranda Blend from Starbucks, and double brewing it.

Or, you can try using an instant espresso. Medaglia DOro Espresso Style Instant Coffee and Café Bustelo Espresso Style Instant Coffee are outstanding choices.

Anything Else You Need To Know

This drink is not for the caffeine faint of heart. A grande packs a punch of 255 milligrams, and let me tell you, I felt it the entire day . If thats too much for you, Id advise lowering the total number of espresso shots, or simply sizing down. A tall has two shots, a grande has three, and a venti has four.

I also thought the price was a little steep for this drink one my usuals at Starbucks is a venti iced latte with various syrups, and it costs roughly the same even though its one size up. The new oatmilk is likely driving the price up on this one.

    The Double Cinnamon Quandary

Yep, this recipe calls for two types of cinnamon: cassia and Saigon. Believe it or not, there are a few pretty big differences between the two spices.

First off, cassia is not authentic cinnamon. Yes, the most popular cinnamon in the US is imposter, but it tastes pretty much like the real thing, and many cooks actually prefer it to the real deal when cooking savory dishes.

Saigon cinnamon, on the other hand, is true cinnamon. It has a strong flavor and a bit of heat and is also much more expensive than cassia.

If you dont want to run to the store just to make this drink, use whichever cinnamon you have on hand, but you may need to play with the amounts a little.

How Much Caffeine Is In This Drink

With two shots of espresso, drinking an Iced Oatmilk Shaken Espresso provides plenty of caffeine to wake you up and keep you going.

While the actual caffeine level will vary based on the espresso you use, on average, a double espresso has about 150 mg of caffeine. A regular cup of coffee can range from about 65 mg to 175 mg of caffeine depending on beans, brewing method, and the serving size.

What Is In The Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso

    • Brown Simple Syrup: Made with brown sugar, water, and vanilla extract. You can easily double or triple the recipe to make more and leave it in the fridge so you can use it whenever you need it! If you want to make this refined sugar-free, you can try coconut sugar. I havent tried that yet but Im sure itd be delicious!
    • Espresso: You can use 2-3 shots of espresso OR very strong coffee. Starbucks Blonde Espresso is typically used to make this drink. Cold brew coffee is also a great option if you do not have espresso available to you.
    • Oat Milk: Unsweetened oat milk works best. Starbucks uses Oatly Brand Oat Milk, but you can use whichever oat milk you prefer. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even make your own oat milk from scratch using my 5-minute Homemade Oat Milk Recipe!
    • Ice: Youll need to fill a mason jar or shaker with ice to mix the drink. Youll also need a bit more ice to pour the shaken drink over.
    • Cocktail Shaker or Mason Jar: If you do not have a cocktail shaker at home, you can use a mason jar with a lid or wide-mouth bottle.

    Drip Coffee Maker Method

Although a coffee maker doesnt have the same force of pushing water through a machine like an authentic espresso machine does, you can still get similar results. Heres how:

For a single serving, add two heaping tablespoons of fine to medium-fine coffee grounds to the basket of the coffee maker. Pack the grounds down like you see a barista at a coffee shop do. Then add 2 ounces of water to the water reserve and brew.

To make a larger batch of coffee concentrate you will want to follow the same instructions as a single serve, but increase the coffee to 1/2 cup of grounds to 1 cups of water. I found that this ratio gives the best tasting strong coffee when using a drip coffee maker.

This ratio will yield about 2/3 cups of coffee concentrate.

    Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte

When you want a dessert in a drink format, you may assume that a Frappuccino is the way to go. Its true that Frappuccinos are the obvious dessert drink option at Starbucks. But if youre looking for something lighter and less overwhelming than a Frappuccino , the Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte is probably what you should be checking out. The sugar cookie syrup that youll find in this drink tastes, surprisingly, very much like a sugar cookie. Its sweet and even has a bit of a dough-like flavor to it. And frankly, its great if youre looking for dessert.

Would we recommend the Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte in place of every cup of coffee youre grabbing before work? Not really. Its sugary and tastes better as a sweet treat than a morning pick-me-up. But for those who are looking for something syrupy and satisfying, its a solid option.

To Make The Brown Sugar Syrup:

This is super simple and takes less than 10 minutes! Simply combine all of the syrup ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Let cook for about 5 minutes or until the brown sugar is full dissolved. Then just let cool and youre ready to shake together your drink!

This syrup makes about 4 drinks *using 2 tablespoons of it in each drink*.

Can I Make This With Coffee

How To Make A Starbucks Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso AT HOME

The answer is yes! To be honest I have only made this with coffee. I use Starbucks Medium roast unsweetened iced coffee to make this recipe. If you would prefer to brew your own coffee, you can do that as well, let it cool and add ice if you would like. I dont like to add my ice cubes immediately because it makes the coffee watery and I like my coffee super strong.
