What Makes This Recipe Great

If youve followed along with my summer at all, you know I am obsessed with the Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso! Its gluten-free, dairy-free, and my absolute favorite pick-me-up for long vacation drives, busy weekday camp pick-ups and drop-offs, and all-around jam-packed summer days.

The only problem? Going to Starbucks all the time is PRICEY! So I set out to recreate this favorite of mine in a much more affordable way and I must say, this homemade version is incredible!

The Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso is among the first of its kind released in early March of 2021. Its debut was alongside the equally popular Iced Chocolate Almond Milk Shaken Espresso. Their release was the companys attempt to attract more customers to the store.

Based on their statistics, there was a large demand for plant-based drinks and the younger generation seemed to enjoy a lot of their iced drink options. These two creations, the Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk and Iced Chocolate Almond Milk Shaken Espresso were, therefore, Starbucks way of killing two birds with one stone.

Ever since its release the Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso has created quite the buzz. It has quickly earned its place among the popular plant-based drinks to have at Starbucks. Everything from its appearance to its taste is worth every penny you pay for it.

Shaken Expresso Drinks Are A Lower Calorie Option At Starbucks

One benefit of the new shaken espresso drinks is they are lower calorie than their dairy counterparts.

A grande iced vanilla latte has 190 calories. Compare that with the Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at 140 calories and the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at 120 calories.

However, these drinks remain sugar and caffeine bombs as they are made with four pumps of flavor syrup and three shots of espresso each. Each pump of syrup clocks in at 20 calories and five grams of sugar.

If you are like me and like to look at the nitty-gritty details of each product you consume, then you may want to know the exact content of the products used in this drink. The Oat milk used is a Swedish brand known as Oatly Oat milk. It is unsweetened and contains rapeseed oil, oats, water, several vitamins , and some preservatives. Its completely safe for individuals who are lactose intolerant or vegan.

The Brown Sugar syrup used, is Starbucks branded. It is a combination of brown sugar, water, invert sugar, natural flavors, salt, and some preservatives. There arent any specified allergens when it comes to this drink, however, Starbucks often cautions its customers to be cautious, especially with unpackaged products. If thats too much for you, Id advise lowering the total number of espresso shots, or simply sizing down. A tall has two shots, a grande has three, and a venti has four.

I also thought the price was a little steep for this drink one my usuals at Starbucks is a venti iced latte with various syrups, and it costs roughly the same even though its one size up. The new oatmilk is likely driving the price up on this one.

Is The Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Healthy

While this isnt necessarily a health drink , dietitians say its not a bad choice compared to other options. Its definitely lower in sugar than a lot of the chains other drinks, says Jessica Cording, M.S., R.D., author of The Little Book of Game-Changers.

Oatly is also dairy-, gluten-, soy-, and tree nut-free, and certified 100% vegan, all of which can be helpful if you have a food allergy or dietary restrictions, says Gina Keatley, C.D.N., of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy in New York City. Also, the Oatly milk contains some vitamin B12 which is an almost impossible nutrient to get if youre a strict vegan, she says.

But experts say there are a few things to keep in mind before ordering. A grande will still run you 120 calories, which mostly comes from the 13 grams of sugar, Keatley says. Theres not a lot of fat and protein to balance out that sugar, so you could be left with a blood sugar crash after having it, Cording says.

If you want to try the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, Keatley recommends pairing it with a fiber-filled snack to keep your blood sugar at an even level.

Overall, though, experts agree its best to think of the new drink as something you have here and there versus your new regular. A drink like this might offer a nice treat, but wont be offering much in the way of staying power, Cording says. But as a once in a while indulgence? Definitely.

As someone who’s a big fan of Starbucks’s Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew , I was really excited to try this new brown sugar iced espresso. And since my best friend didn’t have anything but positive things to say, I figured I had to like it, right? Hell yeah, I did.

It’s strong yet sweet but not too sweet, and it’s a pleasant change from my boring, typical iced coffee with half and half routine. Not to mention, it’s only 120 calories and 13 grams of sugar . If you find the drink a little too strong, like me, or sweet, you can always kindly ask your barista to adjust the number of espresso shots or pumps of syrup. The next time you’re craving a refreshing iced beverage that’ll also give you a bolt of energy, I’d definitely recommend hitting up your closest Starbucks to order one.
