What Do I Need To Make Cold Brew Coffee

What Size Of French Press Should I Buy

How to make Cold Brew Coffee (that doesn’t suck)

Buying a French press may be confusing, especially because makers insist on using cups instead of ouncers or millimeters to indicate the carafes capacity. Imagine most peoples disappointment when, after getting home with a 3-cup French press, they realize that it cannot be used to brew precisely three cups of coffee!

To make your life easier, we have finally made this whole cups situation clear. The most common sizes of French press you can buy are:

  • 3 cups: 12 oz.
  • 8 cups: 34 oz.
  • 12 cups: 51 oz.

If you only make a cold brew for yourself and dont want to store it later, a 3-cup press will be perfect. Otherwise, the 8-cup size is the standard size, which many people buy. If you brew too much coffee, you can store it in your fridge for a few days or even use it as an ingredient for several recipes.

What Type Of Ice Is Best For Iced Coffee

I know this may not seem important but choosing the right ice for your iced coffee is key! Here are your options:

  • Crushed ice this is what you see in this recipe. Because I had a ton of coffee to make I picked up a big bag of crushed ice and used it liberally. This is typically what I use for iced coffee
  • Medium-sized ice cubes this is usually what people have on hand in their freezer and I say go for it!
  • Large ice I like to use larger blocks of ice if Im going to enjoy my iced coffee outside. They are slower to melt this way!

What Youll Need To Make Cold Brew Coffee In A Mason Jar:

Cold Brew Coffee (Recipe & Tips!)
  • A couple of Mason jars
  • Coffee filter
  • Prime Roast coffee, ground coarse
  • Cold filtered water

*For a 32 oz mason jar, use 4 oz of coarsely ground Prime Roast coffee.

*For a 64 oz mason jar, use 8 oz of coarsely ground Prime Roast coffee.

Time needed: 18 hours and 5 minutes.

How to Make Cold Brew Coffeein a Mason Jar

  • Scoop coffee into your jar.

Put 4 oz of coarsely ground coffee into a 32 oz. Mason jar.

  • Fill jar with cold water.

Fill mason jar halfway with cold water and stir. Fill the rest of the way with cold water.

  • Let steep.

Secure lid on jar and place in the refrigerator. Steep for 12-24 hours, depending on desired strength and preference

  • Strain the coffee.

After the desired steep time has been reached, place a coffee filter into a strainer and strain the cold brew into a second Mason jar. The coffee grounds will soak up some of the water, leaving less liquid than what you started with. This will yield a concentrate. If you love your cold brew strong, drink it straight! Or, add cold water until desired strength is reached. We recommend adding small increments of water to find your desired taste. You can always add more, but you cant make it stronger once its too weak.

Technically, you can make cold brew in any container with a lid. A cold brew maker will make this process much simpler, but its not required. If you end up making cold brew without a built-in filter, we recommend setting up a pour-over with a paper filter . Pour the brewed coffee through the filter to remove all of the grounds.

Which Is The Best Coffee For Making Cold Brew

To some extent, the right coffee beans to choose for cold brew will depend on how you plan use it.

A typical espresso blend can work ok if youre planning to add milk to the finished product. However, something roasted lighter, like a filter roast or a light espresso roast, is usually better for serving straight up.

In terms of origins for me, the heavy body & fruity flavours of natural or honey-processed coffees tend to work better with cold coffee brewing. For example, the deep fruity sweetness of an Ethiopian natural or the heavy chocolate flavours of a Brazil Pulped-Natural are right on the money in a cold brew.

On the other hand, the more delicate, refined acidity of washed Central American coffees just dont seem to show their potential in cold brewing. You might be best to save these coffees for hot water brewing.

If you want to keep things simple, Ill put in a shameless plug for our Cold Brew Summer Blend. Weve blended & roasted coffees that we think taste great as cold-brew iced coffee with or without milk.

How Much Cold Brew Coffee Should I Drink Whats The Point Of Cold Brew Coffee

You should probably drink no more cold brew coffee than you do regular coffee, as it has a bit more caffeine, and its cool temperature makes it easy to drink fast. However, if you have a sensitive stomach, a great feature of cold brew is its relatively low acidity, which might make it easier for you to drink more.

    Considerations Before Making Cold Brew

How to Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home

To get started, you’ll want to choose a dark roast coffee. If your roast is too light, your coffee could be uncomfortably acidic for most pallets. On the other hand, if you enjoy and are used to acidic coffee, then you might venture into a lighter roast.

One thing that you’ll want to keep in mind is the grind size of the coffee. To properly brew cold brew, you’ll want to make sure you have a very coarse grind for your coffeesomething approximating kosher salt or flake sea salt. If your coffee grinds are any thinner, you risk brewing a very bitter jar of cold brew.

    Drinks To Make With Cold

    1. Mix it with chai tea for a spicy but smooth beverage.

    2. Add a shot to hot chocolate, milkshakes, or anything involving chocolate or vanilla. Instant mocha!

    3. Blend it into your morning smoothie.

    4. Cold-brewed coffee + sparkling water + a few drops of vanilla extract = a great coffee soda. For a mocha soda, stir in a splash of chocolate extract.

    5. Make mocktails. Cold-brewed coffee is more flavorful than Kahlua. Add it to vanilla, chocolate extract, and cream, then shake it with ice cubes to make the ultimate Mudslide.

    6. Add boiling water to get a steaming cup that’s less acidic than if you started with heat.

    7. Swap in cold-brewed coffee for water or milk when making batters for cakes, muffins, pancakes, or crepes.

    8. Soak ladyfingers in it to make tiramisu. Layer with shaved chocolate, drizzles of maple syrup, and a 50/50 blend of ricotta and mascarpone cheese, then dust with espresso powder.

    9. When making custard or ice cream, substitute half the milk with cold-brewed coffee.

    10. Use it for poaching, deglazing, or making marinades.

How Do You Know If Cold Brew Has Gone Bad

After all the effort of making up your batch of cold brew, the last thing you want is for it to go bad.

Cold brew that has gone bad will usually have a sharp, acidic taste and may even have an unpleasant aroma. Just in the same way that a hot brewed coffee that has been left too long will taste flat and bitter, your cold brew will be unpleasant to smell and taste if it has gone bad.

Some causes of bad cold brew are as follows:

    • Being left for too long, far beyond the advised time frame of a week.
    • Overly oxidised cold brew that has not been kept in an airtight container.
    • Cold brew that has not been refrigerated.

In some rare circumstances, your cold brew may even become moldy. This will be immediately obvious, as you will be able to see mold patches and spores floating on top of your cold brew. If this occurs, throw out the cold brew and sterilize the container with boiling water and washing detergent.

If you can not notice any odd aromas or tastes but still suspect that your cold brew might have gone bad, it is probably best to dispose of it. As the saying goes, life is far too short to drink bad coffee!

    Cold Brew Coffee Ratio

What is the best coffee to water ratio for making cold brew? There are a lot of opinions out there, and again experimentation is the key for finding out what you like best.

    Cold Brew Coffee Ratio:

Thats a lot of coffee grounds right?! Yes it is, and thats why cold brew is called concentrate. After brewing its usually diluted 1:1 or 1:2 with water or milk. Because its a concentrate it holds its flavor very well and results in a smooth delicious coffee.

If you dont want such a concentrated cold brew coffee you can use a different brew ratio. Try a 1:7 or a 1:8 ratio.

Can I Make Cold Brew With A French Press

Homemade Cold Brew Coffee: Save money this summer by ...

    Ashley Rodriguez

Yes! A French press is a perfect vessel for making cold brew since you can filter the grounds with the plunger.

One tip for brewing with a French press: your coffee might have a heavy mouthfeel and a gritty texture. After brewing, try running your cold brew through a paper filter to catch some of the fine grinds and oils contributing to that mouthfeel, but also feel free to skip this step if you want a brew with more heft.

What Size Grind Should I Use For Cold Brew Coffee

For cold brew coffee, a coarse grind works best. And its easier to strain out.

If youve got a medium grind that should work as well, just keep in mind you may need to use a different strainer than with a coarse grind, perhaps a paper strainer.

Finding the right coffee grinder can help when it comes to making cold brew coffee, a burr grinder with a few different settings in the coarse grind range would be great, most of them offer just that.

Is Cold Brew Stronger Than Regular Coffee

Cold brew is richer than regular coffee, but not necessarily stronger. The trick to cold brewing is that it uses room temperature water, so it takes much longer to extract the flavor than conventional hot coffee . The resulting cup of cold brew tends to be much more concentrated because of this extra time. The main difference is that cold brew has a much higher content of caffeine during the long extraction period and therefore is stronger in the caffeine content.

Best Slow Drip System: Bruer Cold Drip System

Making Cold Brew Coffee With the Primula Coffee Maker

What We Love: Attractive design, produces great results

What We Don’t Love: Tricky to learn

Like the OXO, the Bruer Cold Drip Coffee System uses gravity to prevent gritty cold-brew coffee. The top chamber of this coffee maker holds ice water, which slowly drips onto the coffee grounds held below. A center knob lets you adjust the drip rate to a recommended one drop of water per second. A steel mesh filter prevents sediment from leaching into the finished cold brew.

This system is delicate, since it’s made of glass, and its capacity is limited to 20 ounces. A common complaint is the learning curve required to master the Bruer. However, if you want a silky-smooth cold-brew with no grit, this is your best bet. The Bruer weighs a little under 2 pounds and 10.5 inches in height, making it a countertop model.

“There’s a bit of a learning curve to using this brewer, but once I mastered the process, I was rewarded with the smoothest homemade cold brew. Once brewing is complete and the tower is removed, I love that the silicone lid can be pressed into the pitcher for a tight seal when storing in the fridge. Plus, the pitcher itself is beautiful enough for other uses: I’ve used mine to mix big-batch cocktails and lemonade.” Taysha Murtaugh, Commerce Editorial Director

    What About Iced Coffee

Technically, you can make iced coffee using your leftover coffee from the day before. However, it is generally recommended to make iced coffee fresh since leftover coffee will have a more mellow taste. In other words, the coffee simply wont taste as good.

You can use your leftover coffee by turning it into ice cubes, as described above. This method will not negatively affect the overall taste of the coffee. In fact, it should enhance it because your iced coffee wont be watered down as the regular ice cubes melt.

If you sincerely dont care about taste that much, then you can use leftover coffee to make iced coffee. For anyone who cares about the way their coffee tastes, we recommend making a new batch of fresh iced coffee instead.
