The Benefits Of Fairtrade Coffee

While using Fairtrade-certified coffee has no real impact on you or your coffee experience, using it can be a huge deal for the coffee famers who produce the coffee you drink.

This is because Fairtrade works to improve the coffee farmers quality of life, give them fair wages, and enable their children to attend school, while helping to develop local communities. It may not taste different, but its a coffee with a good heart.

Real Coffee says…

At Real Coffee, 80% of our Nespresso-compatible capsules contain Fairtrade coffee, and we are working on the rest. Just like our organic varieties, we charge no extra for using Fairtrade-certified coffee in our Nespresso pods.

Can You Use Your Own Coffee In Nespresso Vertuo

New Nespresso Vertuo Coffee Pods Welcome Set 12 Variety Capsules BB 31 ...

Technically, you cannot use your own coffee with the Nespresso Vertuo. This is because the Vertuo machines brew coffee by identifying a barcode on the Nespresso capsule that you place inside the unit.

You cant actually put your own coffee grounds into the machine. Its a single-serve brewer and only works with compatible pods.

However, you can cheat the system to reuse Nespresso Vertuo coffee pods with your own grounds. It just takes a little creativity. But by reusing the pods, you can easily save a lot of money every month instead of buying new pods.

Vertuo Coffee Pod / Capsule Sizes

One of the big design decisions made when introducing the VertuoLine range was larger coffee cup sizes. Particularly in America, consumers were eager for a capsule solution to larger cups and mugs. As a result, Nespresso Vertuo capsules come in five different sizes:

  • Espresso the smallest Vertuo coffee pod, this is simply designed to be blended with 40ml of water.
  • Double Espresso as suggested by the name, doubling the amount of water to 80ml
  • Gran Lungo 150ml of water is used to make a coffee with this capsule
  • Mug this is still small by western mug standards, but 230ml of water is used to blend with this coffee pod, making it larger than any standard size offered by the OriginalLine range
  • Alto at 414ml, this is by far the largest coffee that a single Nespresso Vertuo pod can make as standard

Whatdoes This Mean For You If You Have A Vertuo Machine

The Vertuo pods patent means that, unfortunately, Nespresso have a monopoly on the market for this pod design. This ensures customers only go to them for their Vertuo pods, which ends up being anti-consumer as it prevents third-party brands from providing alternatives and competing over price.

Tips For Saving Money On Nespresso Capsules

How many times can you reuse Nespresso pod?

Nespresso pods can be reused up to five times, but they may not produce the same quality of coffee each time.

Can you use 1 coffee pod twice?

It is possible to use a coffee pod twice, but it is not recommended. The coffee will not taste as good the second time, and it may also produce less coffee.

How many times can you use coffee capsule?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on a number of factors, such as the type of coffee capsule, the make and model of coffee machine, and how often the machine is used. However, most coffee capsules are designed to be used just once.

How many shots of espresso are in a Nespresso capsule?

There are about 9-10 shots of espresso in a Nespresso capsule.

Can you use Vertuo capsules twice?

Yes, you can use Vertuo capsules twice. The first time you use them, the machine will extract all of the coffee from the capsule. The second time, the machine will only extract half of the coffee from the capsule. This is because the coffee has already been extracted once and there isnt as much coffee in the capsule to extract.

How do you refill a reusable Nespresso capsule?

To refill a reusable Nespresso capsule, first remove the top of the capsule. Then, fill the capsule with ground coffee to the top. Finally, replace the top of the capsule and twist it into place.

Do reusable Nespresso pods damage the machine? Are Nespresso pods single or double shot?

Nespresso pods are single shot.

Can Nespresso Vertuo Use Other Pods

Nespresso Vertuo Plus First Use

So far, only Nespresso brand capsules are compatible with Nespresso VertuoLine machines, so you will need to buy from the company if you have a Vertuo coffee maker. Or you can buy a refillable pod for your VertuoLine coffee machine to make regular coffee, which we think is the best Nespresso capsules alternative.

Hiline Coffee Broadway Dark Roast

If you love dark, bold-tasting coffee but not a whole lot of caffeine, then HiLine Coffees capsules are a dream come true. Each pod contains around 60 to 70 mg of caffeine, so they are not the strongest on this list of Nespresso alternatives.

The capsules are compatible with Citiz, Essenza, Lattissima, Maestria, U, Le Cube and Pixie Nespresso machines.

Youre probably already aware of how fresh coffee is the best. The more oxygen interacts with coffee, and the longer this takes place, the more the flavor and aroma suffer. The good news is HiLine roasts their coffee shortly before shipping, so youre coffee will be as fresh as possible.

They also come in lots of fun flavors like pumpkin spice, Wall Street dark, Swiss mocha almond, hazelnut cupcake, and tons more, so youll never get bored.

How Does Nespresso Compare To Keurig

Nespresso and Keurig both make easy-to-use single-serve coffee makers, but their products and target market are quite different. Nespresso machines focus on espresso and espresso drinks. They tend to be a bit more expensive but are also of higher quality. In contrast, Keurig models and Keurig alternatives brew drip coffee and prioritize speed, convenience, and low cost over coffee quality. The Benefits Of Organic Coffee

Better for yourself and the environment.

Organic is certainly a buzz word these days, but for good reason organic produce is better for both yourself and the environment. Organic coffee in particular, because regular coffee is one of the most heavily chemically-treated foods in the world.

Organic coffee is richer in antioxidants.

While the taste isnt necessarily better than regular non-organic coffee, by using compatible Nespresso® pods filled with organic coffee, you are not ingesting potentially harmful chemicals that have been absorbed by the beans from the use of synthetic additives or fertilizer. It has also been found that organic coffee is richer in antioxidants than regular coffee, which can only be a good thing.

Meanwhile, organic coffee is generally better for the environment. This is because there is no use of chemicals that can affect the local habitat and harm the people who live on and near the coffee farms.

Real Coffee says…

Currently three of Real Coffees varieties are certified organic: Lungo San Marino, Espresso Bologna, and our Single Origin Sumatra. The best news? We charge nothing extra for using organic coffee this comes as standard! View them all here: Organic coffees for Nespresso®

Is Nespresso Vertuo Better Than Original

We have become accustomed over time to expect a newer product to be better than an older one.

Please enable JavaScript

Each time a new iPhone comes out its better than the previous one and TVs from 10 years ago are unrecognisable from the latest models so its natural to think that the same thing applies to coffee machines as well.

With some coffee machines it can be true that the latest model is more effective at making a better cup of coffee but a lot of the time it isnt and some coffee machines that have been around for many years make a better cup of coffee than the newest model just released.

Having owned a number of Nespresso machines over the years and drunk many cups of coffee from both original and Vertuo pods it is my opinion that Vertuo pods are not better than original pods.

They may be the latest pods that Nespresso have released but they dont deliver a better cup of coffee.

They are not any worse than original but they are not any better in terms of the quality of coffee that gets delivered into your cup.

So how do you decide on one over the other?

What Is Nespresso Originalline And Nespresso Vertuoline

Nespresso now produce different types of coffee pods Nespresso Virtuoline are the newcomers on the scene compared to Nespresso OriginalLine, which is what we would call the original Nespresso capsules. The original capsules were shaped like the coffee pods we have seen since they became commonplace. They have slightly angled straight sides with a shallow angle at the top.

The new Nespresso VertuoLine capsules are dome shaped and as a result, look rather different! These capsules will not fit into Nespresso OriginalLine machines. Similarly, OriginalLine capsules wont fit into the new VertuoLine machines.

Nespresso VertuoLine machines were originally developed for the American market, where people wanted to see capsules that would fill larger sizes of coffee cup beyond Nespressos Lungo size for a quick explanation of Nespressos coffee sizes Espresso, Ristretto and Lungo, visit our coffee size guide here

How To Get The Best Coffee Experience Every Time

The appeal of a Nespresso® machine is that its a quick, easy and mess-free way to make a quality espresso. But theres actually an art to getting the best taste. Here are some of the easiest ways to enhance your next cup of Nespresso-compatible coffee:

Load the pod correctly Its worth spending an extra second to ensure the Nespresso® pod is lined-up in the machine correctly. When you close the machine, press firmly to pierce the capsule and foil, but dont force it. If it feels like there is too much resistance, check the pod is loaded correctly.

Use filtered waterTo get the optimum taste from your speciality coffee, we advise using filtered water. Filtration reduces the chlorine, sediment and odours in the water, as well as softening the water this is particularly important if you live in a hard water area of the UK.

Warm your machine and cup before useA warm machine works more efficiently the pods pierce easier, the coffee pours smoother, and the taste is even better. Turn your machine on and run some water into a cup. This will give you improved coffee extraction, as well as a warm cup, which all leads to a better overall coffee experience.

Top Tip!

Keep your machine descaled and maintained to ensure the inside of your machine functions correctly. Keeping limescale out of your machine will help it last longer and the coffee taste better. Real Coffee offer an excellent made especially for Nespresso® machines.

What Coffee Pods Are Compatible With Nespresso Machines

Nespresso Vertuo Plus Coffee Preparation

The single serve coffee maker market in North America is all but dominated by Keurig. Over the years, Nespresso Vertuoline and original machines have been gaining shares but still account for less than 10% of annual machine sales.

In Europe, it’s a different story. In 2018, I made a trip across Western Europe staying in Airbnb’s and ALL of them had Nespresso machines. Maybe it’s because they’re manufactured in Switzerland, elicit continental pride or are the standard part of European culture, but they have an excellent foothold in Europe in general.

The contrast is strange because anyone who has owned both knows that Espresso machines are known for having better performance, ease of cleaning, and overall quality/reliability. So, why the market difference?

In North America, it all very simply comes down to coffee choice. The trouble with Nespresso is finding pods for them. You see, Nestlé is the parent company that owns Nespresso and until recently, they had very strict patents protecting the design of their coffee pods which made it very difficult for competing coffee companies to offer their coffee in Nespresso-compatible pods. This ensured that not only were Nespresso customers purchasing their machines, they were also agreeing to the long-term commitment of purchasing more Nespresso product . But. . . as you’ll see in this article, change is a’ brewin’.

Can I Reuse A Nespresso Capsule

It depends on what brand of capsule youre using.

Some brands allow you to re-use the capsule once after cleaning it thoroughly.

Others require you to throw away the entire capsule every single time.

This is why we recommend buying new capsules whenever possible.

While recycling is a better option, you shouldnt reuse these capsules because of the presence of aluminium and because the used capsules can contaminate your new ones.

Do All Nespresso Pods Fit All Nespresso Machines

One of the most frequently asked questions by the customers on the market is exactly this, Do all Nespresso pods fit all Nespresso machines?

First of all, it is important to note that throughout the years, Nespresso has changed the way they manufacture their pods, or to be more precise, each pod isnt pierced the same as it was before. Nowadays, their pods cost more, and unfortunately, since they changed their manufacturing process, this has lead to some compatible issues.

Therefore, you should keep in mind that Old OriginalLine capsules have a different look from the New VertuoLine, in fact, VertuoLine capsules are dome-shaped and do not look nowhere near as the ones of the OriginalLine.

So, whats the thing here? Well, if you have OriginalLine capsules, they will not be compatible with the VertuoLine, and vice-versa, if you have VertuoLine capsules they will not be compatible with the old, OriginalLine machines.

To simplify this, I would like you to know that the OriginalLine machines are focused on extracting the coffee of the capsules under 19 bars of pressure, while VertuoLine are basically spun inside the Nespresso coffee machine and are extracted at 7,000 rotations per minute.

Fortunately, there are numerous capsules available for both machines, and can satisfy the demands of the users of both machines.

How To Reset Your Machine

To consistently get a great taste from your compatible Nespresso® pods, you should ensure the amount of water in the cup is not too much or too little otherwise the taste can be too weak or too strong.

A Nespresso® machine will default to produce an espresso at 40ml and a lungo at 110ml.

Real Coffee says…

For a look at setting the correct water amount for a wide range of Nespresso® machines, check out our complete guide to cup size programming.

Top Tip!

We recommend an espresso size of 40ml, with a lungo of 100ml . If you prefer your coffee extra strong, adjust the size of your espresso to 30ml and your lungo to 80ml.
