Folgers Coffee Is It Good

Folgers Coffee is a coffee brand that is made in the United States and sold mainly in North America i.e., in Mexico and Canada.

It is a subsidiary of The J.M. Smucker Company, a food and beverage conglomerate.

It has dominated the United States market since the early 1990s.

Considering how competitive and outright ruthless the market can be, any brand that has lasted that long and is this well known is bound to be worth something, and be of high quality really.

Folgers Markets A New Coffee To Cost

IN the 24 years since coffee drinkers were first told that the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup, the statement has become harder to defend.

The competition shops like Starbucks, Cosi or Caribou can now be found on every corner, all brewing coffee made from pricey Arabica beans. Mainstays like Folgers which relies on less expensive Robusta beans have competed by focusing on cost-conscious home brewers, often by introducing flavored coffees or specialty brews.

Now Folgers, which is still the top-selling packaged coffee in the United States, is trying to lure customers with an approach to roasting that it calls the biggest innovation since the launch of decaf.

The company will unveil the roasting method with an ad campaign that it says is the most expensive in the history of the brand.

Over the last 8 to 10 years, we have been working on ways to drive technology to improve the cup-to-cup consistency and flavor quality of our coffee, said Jamie Egasti, president of coffee for Procter & Gamble. This year, Procter & Gamble sold the Folgers brand to the J. M. Smucker Company for $2.95 billion in stock. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year.

P.& G. has overhauled its main roasting plant in east New Orleans which employs more than 400 people to include a step it calls predry or preroast. Each bean is fully dried before roasting, ensuring a more evenly cooked bean, which makes it less bitter.

Whats Wrong With Folgers Coffee

Folgers Mountain Medium Smooth Simply Grown Ground Coffee ...

QUESTION: Whats wrong with Folgers coffee? I think its good and a lot of those fancy coffees are just bitter and disgusting. Bill B

ANSWER: There is nothing specifically wrong with Folgers coffee. Folgers is one of the best selling brands of coffee in America, and a staple at many households. Many people, especially in America, where Folgers originated and is still popular to this day, have been purchasing, brewing, and enjoying Folgers brand coffee for their entire lives. The brands slogan, the best part of waking up, is Folgers in your cup, is permanently etched into the memory of a large percentage of American families.

The original Folgers, called Folgers Classic Roast, is said to use the same recipe that they have been using since the company was founded in the 1800s. The ingredient list is the same as it has always been since day one: 100% coffee. The kind of coffee Folgers uses, however, is shrouded in mystery. According to the brands own website, Folgers is made with a blend of robusta and arabica coffee beans, which are mountain grown and medium-roasted for a rich, smooth flavor.

Though there are plenty of positive online reviews since Folgers made the switch, and even enough positive reviews to outweigh the negative reviews, there is still a noticeable shift in opinion in how people view the brand since 2015.

The History Behind It

The company was established in 1850 in San Francisco, California, in the United States as the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills.

Its founder Mr. William H. Bovee observed that people in California were buying their coffee beans and then roasting it and grinding it themselves.

He saw this as an opportunity to set up a company that will make this work easier for them. He hired a carpenter Mr. James A. Folger to assist him in building the coffee mill.

James came to California, during the California Gold Rush, at the age of 15, together with his two older brothers from Nantucket Island.

James worked in the company for almost one year, and during this period, he saved enough money that he used to buy a stake in the company.

Afterward, he ventured to mine gold. Mr. James Folger carried along with him samples of the coffee and spices that the company produced and took orders from shops along the way.

He became a full partner at Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills in 1865, and by 1872, he acquired the stake of the other members and renamed the company J.A. Folger & Co.

James worked in the company together with his family, and when he passed on in 1889, his eldest son James A. Folger II took over as the CEO of the company at just 26 years old.

The company snowballed in the 1900s because of a shrewd salesman known as Frank P. Atha.

After successfully selling coffee in the California area for a while, Frank advised James Folger II to open a coffee plant in the state of Texas.

The Passing Of The Torch

James Folger passed away at the age of 54. In 1889, James Folger Jr. said goodbye to his father and took control of the company. He was determined to follow in his fathers footsteps and make the Folgers name synonymous with great-tasting coffee. It was James Folger II who began working with a salesman by the name of Frank Atha. It was Atha who used creative store designs and his energetic sales abilities to help Folgers Coffee find its way across the rest of the United States.

The Folgers team endured hardships with the rest of the country. Surviving the Great San Francisco Earthquake and fires, the company stood strong with the rest of the country during World War II. In the 1940s, due to shortages caused by the war, the company had to reimagine itself and its packaging. Thus, the glass coffee jar was born.

The Folgers company continued to be a pioneer in the coffee industry. During the rise of instant coffee, the Folgers team attempted to try their hand at the new craze. Unfortunately, their original effort didnt sit well with customers, but they didnt give up. In 1958, Instant Folgers hit the store shelves and was better received than its predecessor.

    Great Taste Takes Center Stage

Other coffee companies and importers during this era seemed more concerned with appearance rather than taste. These companies bought their coffee beans solely on their appearance. Luckily, a new idea was born in San Francisco known as cup-tasting. James Folger heard of this technique and decided to implement it within his own company.

Taking matters into his own hands, James decided to taste each shipment of coffee beans Folgers bought. It didnt take long before he realized certain beans had a better taste and aroma. In his opinion, beans grown in the mountains were superior. This was when Folgers Mountain Grown Coffees were truly born.

    A Folgers Coffee History

Folgers coffee got its start in San Francisco in 1850. An industrious young entrepreneur by the name of James Folger was contracted to build a coffee mill for a man by the name of William Bovee. James Folger had no intention of getting into the coffee business when he built the mill, as his heart was set on becoming a part of the gold rush that brought so many out west in search of gold during the early 1830s. After completing the construction of the mill for Mr. Bovee, Mr. Folger set out into the California countryside in search of gold.

Mr. Folger searched the hills for gold for several years without much success, and eventually decided to abandon his quest. He returned to San Francisco and had a business meeting with his former associate, and owner of the coffee mill, Mr. William Bovee. The meeting resulted in a business partnership, which eventually led to the founding of the J.A. Folgers Coffee Company. At first, Folgers Coffee was a small operation, but the company grew very quickly. In 1889, when James decided to hand over the reins of the company to his son, James Folger II, they were ready for national distribution.
