How Much Coffee Does Mexico Grow

The crop is grown across 16 of Mexicos states, but you will find most of the countrys 711,000 hectares in the south.

Coffee first found its way into Mexico in the late 1700s, when it was cultivated on farms owned by Europeans with predominantly indigenous Mexican labourers. A revolution in the early 20th century began the process of changing the status quo through agrarian land reform.

Much of the countrys coffee production is organised through cooperatives. Another little-known fact is that Mexico is one of the worlds largest exporters of organic-certified coffee, with up to 8% of producers growing it, according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development . These facts are related, but to understand why, youll have to go back nearly 40 years.

However, the collapse of the International Coffee Agreement removed the coffee price floor, and eventually, INMECAFE closed. In its place rose cooperatives, who not only supported Mexicos indigenous producers who also encouraged organic coffee production.

Best Mexico Coffee Brands From Veracruz

While researching Veracruz coffee beans, it was very difficult finding a brand that people consider to be good.

So, even though Veracruz is one of the more prolific regions in Mexico when in comes to coffee bean production, it apparently is ho hum when it comes to taste.

Even though we couldnt find anyone we could endorse, we did find a few potential candidates.

The first was the Kaldis Coffee company. However, even though this article talks about how good their Mexico Coatepec is, we couldnt find where Kaldis Coffee is still selling that brand.

The second potential candidate was Blue Bag Coffee. They have a very good description of their coffee on this link. But, we couldnt find enough reviews to convince us that these coffee beans are in fact very high quality.

The third potential candidate is La Parroquia de Veracruz Mexican Mountain Grown Gourmet Coffee. They import their coffee beans from Veracruz. They claim La Parroquia is the most famous Cafe in Mexico. Even though a couple of consumers found this coffee top notch, there just isnt enough background on this brand to give it our endorsement.

The Mexican Coffee Institute INMECAFE, was a government regulated agency, responsible for providing technical assistance, administrating the Mexican export quotas of coffee, and keeping coffee price high and stable in the market. Because of the INMECAFE efforts to integrate new land into coffee cultivation, coffee productivity rapidly increased. As the result, the three main states, Chiapas, Veracruz and Oaxaca, contributed 73% of the total amount of agriculture land for coffee production.

Between 1970 and 1982, the Mexican agriculture land devoted to coffee production increased by 141,203 hectares and national coffee production has grown approximately 6,000 tons of green coffee per year. Like with many of its neighboring countries, Mexico didnt receive coffee plants until the late-1700s when Spanish colonials brought plants from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. During this time, however, Mexico was exporting vast amounts of minerals like gold and silver, so agriculture generally took the back seat.

It wasnt until the 1860s that coffee as a valuable export really took off. Because of a border dispute with Guatemala, Mexicos government was forced to begin registering land. This led to the many areas of previously unregistered land to be put up for auction, giving wealthy Europeans a legal path to Mexican investment.

Many of these Europeans, especially Italians and Germans, started large coffee farms in Mexicos remote Southern regions and filled them with local workers who previously believed they owned the land. Thankfully, labor laws in 1914 freed these workers who had essentially become indentured servants.

These newly freed and skilled locals started to get in on the growing coffee industry for themselves, particularly after the Mexican Revolution in the early-1900s when the government created incentives for new farms.

    Dont feel like you need to use all of them. This recipe is very forgiving, and any combination can be used. Some recipes use cinnamon only. Some skip the orange peel. Feel free to roll with whatever you have on-hand. Cinnamon and coffee are really the only true requirements. But using all the suggested spices creates an incredibly floral aroma. I highly recommend it.

    How many repeat visitors, or even new visitors will go to a resort get after a customer has spent their entire multi-thousand dollar vacation in the bathroom.

    Heres a little background to my coffee cocktail story. Photos are from our familys Thanksgiving vacation to Mexico a number of years ago.

    My entire family to include my parents, plus both sisters and their husbands and kids blocked off a week on our calendars to fly south for a vacation together. Fifteen of us!

    It was the first time we had ever done something like this. And Im sure that if we found a few extra coins hiding in the couch cushions, wed pack our bags today to do it all over again!

    We flew from Minnesota to Cancun, and then our family filled a small bus and rode about an hour south to our Mexican Riviera Maya home, Dreams Puerto Aventuras Resort.

    This was my first total-beach vacation.

    Ill readily admit that I had always been a beach vacation naysayer. I love to go new places, to explore, and to basically go, go, go all the while Im away, taking in as much as I can of each new area. So Ive always viewed a week at the beach as a waste of time and money.

    But it only took about 12 hours of sand-between-my-toes and swimsuit-is-my-only-daytime-attire before I realized how wrong Id been all these years.

    I was convinced.

    Theres simply no denying how beneficial a tropical beach vacation is. The big blue skies, filled with warm and embracing sunshine, plus the sparkling, warm waters and silky soft sandits such an awesome way to relax. And the bonus with this trip was that our family was able to connect in a really beautiful and different way!

    Mexican Coffee Growing Facts

    The majority of Mexicos coffee is grown along the Southern border, where mountain ranges and jungles give coffee plants the nutrients and altitude they need to produce stellar beans. Among these regions are the departments of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Pluma, and Veracruzsome of the most well-known origins in the specialty coffee community.

    But, despite Mexicos proximity to the US, a large portion of its most prized coffee is actually exported to Europe, and particularly Germany. We still get some excellent Mexican beans, but many of the best-performing farms have had export agreements with European buyers for decades.

    Most smaller farms are run by indigenous groups. Their agricultural philosophy for centuries actually lines up very well with organic farming, and sometimes there are basically no differences in the farming techniques. This is what made Mexico the Certified Organic powerhouse it is todaya large portion of the farms were already practicing organic farming.

    What About Mexican Coffee Recipes

    But if you Google Mexican Coffee, youre more likely to get drink recipes than a selection of delicious beans. The first, is the coffee preparation known in Mexico as Café de olla. That coffee is basically coffee boiled in a clay pot called an olla, alongside piloncillo and cinnamon .

    Can you make real café de olla without an olla? Im probably the wrong person to answer that question. But for an approximation thatll carry the same flavors, youll do fine clicking over to our cowboy coffee article and adding a few cinnamon sticks and a chunk of piloncillo to either recipe to taste.

    The other result you might find for Mexican Coffee is some sort of alcoholic drink, though what exactly that might entail is hard to pin down. I highly recommend taking a peek at this YouTube video of servers preparing a so-called Mexican coffee in Cabo San Lucas, but just as highly recommend against trying that at home .

    Other so-called Mexican coffees seem to just be recipes for Irish Coffee with tequila replacing whiskey, which I dont think is a great pairing. Try changing up your Irish coffee recipe with mezcal instead , maybe throwing in a little Kahlua too.

    If you have an espresso machine and dont mind shelling out for a new bottle of liquor, an actual Mexican coffee cocktail is the carajillo. There are variations, but at its simplest a carajillo consists of more or less equal parts espresso and the sweet Spanish liqueur Licor 43. Mix them up, pour it over ice, and get to partying.
