LITTLE ROCK, Ark.Westrock Coffee Company, LLCtoday completed its previously announced agreement to acquire S& D Coffee & Tea from Cott Corporation . The transaction, valued at $405 million, creates the nations leading integrated coffee, tea, and extract company serving retailers, restaurants, convenience stores, commercial accounts, and the hospitality industry.

The newly combined business, Westrock Coffee Company, LLC, operates several US and international subsidiaries. The US-based service providers include Westrock Coffee Roasting in North Little Rock, AR, which supplies branded and private label coffee to global retailers and hotel chains, and S& D Coffee & Tea, in Concord, NC, which is the US market leader in custom coffee roasting and service, tea blends, and extracts. These operating subsidiaries will continue to serve customers under their respective brand names for the foreseeable future and will remain located in their current facilities.

In terms of flavor and cost, it ranked highest overall, though it did lose points for not being very good to microwave. Still, at $5.83/lb, it’s cost efficient enough to just make another cup of coffee.

A runner up for the best grocery store coffee is New England Coffee, a good cup of coffee that won’t cost you more than $10 for a bag. If you’re splurging out on grocery store grounds, I recommend Green Mountain. If you’d like an at-home version of a chain coffee store, I’d pick Dunkin’ Donuts over Starbucks.

An Expanded Customer Base Leads To Growth Nationally

The 1960s were an important decade of growth and change at S& D. On New Year‘s Day in 1965, two big changes took place: J. Roy Davis, Jr., who had joined the company in 1958, became president of S& D. The company also bought Interstate Coffee Co., a Georgia warehouse grocers’ supplier.

J. Roy Davis, Jr., led his crew of 12 employees through some major changes. In the late 1960s, Davis officially refocused S& D’s market strategy away from small grocery stores to concentrate business on the commercial side of the coffee business: restaurants, hospitals, and convenience stores, and in 1968, the office coffee market. In white collar and industrial facilities, S& D brought what it referred to as the “S& D Coffee Break,” which consisted of coffee brewing machines, coffee, and related products for employee use. The service proved a solid business move, and by 1970, S& D had reached $1.7 million in sales. When Maxwell House and Chase & Sanborne switched their business away from route service, S& D held fast and gained many new customers. The company was fast becoming a regional power, distributing coffee and related products in North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Virginia.

New Facility In Conway Arkansas

The company finalized the purchase of a 524,000 square-foot facility in Conway, Arkansas, that will provide Westrock Coffee ample space for the development, production and distribution of its coffee, tea, and ready-to-drink products. The location will utilize state-of-the-art equipment, including advanced robotics, specifically designed to efficiently manufacture and package a wide range of beverages, such as canned or bottled cold brew coffees, lattes, assorted teas, and juice-based products as well as single serve coffee cups. The space will also incorporate state-of-the-art quality assurance and product development labs, enabling Westrock Coffee to create, test, and produce new beverage solutions.

Work is already complete on the 90,000-square-foot, two-building facility in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, announced earlier this year, with finished good production set to begin in the first quarter of 2022. The new facility, which is just 30 minutes from the international hub of Singapore, will enhance Westrock Coffees roasting capacity to accommodate for increases in manufacturing, packaging and warehousing, of coffee and extract solutions across APAC and MENA regions. While Westrock Coffee has a history in international coffee trade and export, this will be its first roasting, manufacturing and packaging facility outside of the U.S.

As America began to pay more attention to what it brewed, Rhyne Davis, Roy Davis’s son and part of S& D’s management staff, focused his attention on the company’s introduction of specialty coffees. S& D acquired two new high-tech roasters, the Probat R-2000 and the Burns System 90, and embarked on a major expansion of its manufacturing and distribution facilities. In 1992, S& D also expanded its offerings to include juice, teas, and popular specialty coffees.

With greater capacity and roasting flexibility, S& D turned its attention to the expanding convenience store market, introducing its first branded program, Coffee Zone. In 1996, it ended its relationship with Dine-Mor and expanded its headquarters facility, doubling its roasting capacity from 21 million to 47 million pounds annually. In May 1998, S& D introduced its web site.

In a strategic move to expand business in the Northeast, S& D purchased Victor Coffee Company of Boston, Massachusetts, in May 2000. Victor Coffee was the oldest coffee roaster in the country, having been founded in the 1790s. The acquisition of Victor more than doubled the number of McDonald’s restaurants among S& D’s customers from 4,000 to 8,000. In addition to S& D-serviced units in New England, the Great Lakes area, and the Midwest, there were units throughout the Southeast, Ohio, and Texas. The acquisition of Victor Coffee also made S& D the number two domestic foodservice coffee roaster behind Sara Lee.
