Who Is The Founder

Copper Cow Coffee, Portable Pour Over Vietnamese Coffee ...

Copper Cow Coffee is the brainchild of Vietnamese American Debbie Wei Mullin. She clubbed her love for Vietnamese coffee and culture with her passion for sustainability to come up with Copper Cow Coffee. This woman-owned coffee brand aims to bring an authentic, yet modernized, pour-over barista-quality coffee experience to homes across the nation.

Prior to setting up Copper Cow Coffee in 2017, Debbie had another business venture named Wei Pantry, which sold Vietnamese cooking ingredients and pantry essentials. In an interview with Rho MarketFit, the entrepreneur revealed, “My mom is from Vietnam, so even though I grew up in California, we only ate Vietnamese food growing up. .” It wasnt until I was older I realized that basically no one was familiar with the kind of food that I grew up eating. I always thought that was such a shame, that people were not aware of the awesomeness of Vietnamese cuisine. Even though those products are really near and dear to my heart because cooking was such a big part of my upbringing and my culture, I realized it wasnt a big enough business idea. Not that many Americans cook. If youre looking to have a scalable business you really have to ask yourself: What is a big business idea? What is the addressable market? This is when she stumbled upon the highly lucrative coffee industry.

What Is Copper Cow Coffee

Founded by Vietnamese-American entrepreneur and former World Bank consultant Debbie Wei Mullin, Copper Cow Coffee comes in two-part packets: One packet contains a ground coffee blend of 70% Robusta and 30% Arabica coffee beans while the other contains sweetened condensed milk sourced from a California farm. Best of all, you dont need any additional brewing equipment only hot water and a mug.

To brew your coffee, you simply tear the top off the packet, pop open the side flaps and hang them on the sides of your cup. After adding a small amount of water to activate the grounds, you can continue pouring in hot water to let the coffee filter through. The brand recommends adding 8 ounces of hot water before you can add the sticky, sweet condensed milk as the final finishing touch. If youre not a fan of lattes made with condensed milk and prefer to take your coffee black or with your own creamer, Copper Cow Coffee offers a classic pourover option, as a well as a for anyone who dislikes the coffee jitters. The brand also recently added a Chai Latte and Matcha Tea Latte set for tea lovers.

Copper Cow Coffee: Who Are They And What Do They Do

The creator of Copper Cow Coffee, Debbie Wei Mullin, has her roots in Vietnam. Before establishing her coffee company, Debbie garnered experience in sustainability work and even held a job at the World Bank. In 1975, Debbies mother moved to the United States from Vietnam. Debbie, who was born years after, mentioned that she grew up on Vietnamese coffee and was an ardent lover of the beverage. In all her years of making and drinking Vietnamese coffee, Debbie came across one particular problem. Vietnamese coffee is bitter, and if not prepared properly, can ruin the taste of this wonderful beverage.

Not everyone knows how to make it properly. Hence, to bring her beloved Vietnamese coffee to the world, Debbie gave birth to Copper Cow Coffee. Through her company, Debbie tries to provide the most authentic Vietnamese coffee experience packaged in an easy-to-brew format. She sources her coffee directly from Vietnam and uses Robusta beans. The bitterness of the coffee can only be combatted by the sweetness of condensed milk. Thus, Debbie provided every unit of her coffee with a small portion of condensed milk.

If you’re a fan of Shark Tank, the reality show on ABC that invites budding entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to a group of blood-thirsty investors, you may have also found The Pitch, a podcast from Gimlet Media with a similar concept. I’m a big fan of both, and I first learned about Copper Cow back in 2019 when the founder, Debbie Wei Mullin, made an appearance on the podcast. The idea for Copper Cow is a clever one: Vietnamese pour-over coffee that requires no additional brewing equipment. No ceramic dripper, no metal Phin filter, no Chemex. Only hot water and a mug.

The idea stuck with me, so when Copper Cow reached out to see if we’d be interested in reviewing their coffee, I was excited. Would the clever packaging actually work? Would it be easy to use? Would it really deliver a great cup of coffee?

What Is Vietnamese Coffee

Seen on virtually every street corner of Metropolitan Vietnam, Vietnamese coffee is traditionally brewed in a phin a small metal cup that fits over a mug or cup and brews slowly, but makes a strong and small coffee which resembles a thicker, more caffeinated espresso, according to Copper Cow Coffee.

In 2017, Mullin launched Copper Cow Coffee which blended her love of Vietnamese culture particularly Vietnamese coffee and passion for sustainability.

I wanted to start my own company and create something that would elevate Vietnamese coffee, Mullin told FoodNavigator-USA.

As the worlds second largest producer of coffee , Vietnam has largely been left out of the specialty coffee conversation, notes Mullin, who said up until recently Vietnamese coffee had been a market more focused on quantity and supply rather than product quality.

But the tide is changing as the third-wave coffee movement has gone from niche to global trend.

Theres been a complete revolution of the coffee industry in Vietnam, said Mullin who before launching Copper Cow Coffee traveled to Vietnam to find a sustainable supplier that could meet a set of high product quality standards such as testing the sugar levels of the coffee cherry before picking it.

Mullin found a co-op where she sources the coffee for Copper Cow products today.

Copper Cow Coffee: Where Are They Now

Copper Cow Coffee Classic Cream Vietnamese Coffee Kit, 5 ...

Even before starting Copper Cow Coffee, Debbie used to sell other Vietnamese products like kitchen ingredients since 2014. In 2017, she began Copper Cow Coffee with investments from her family, friends, and relatives. In the beginning, Debbie concentrated mainly on wholesale and focused very little on the online retailing of her product. After attending the 500 Startups program in March of 2018, Debbie realized that she needed more funding to increase production.

Debbie started pitching her company to investors, but none seemed to be interested. She then received her big break when Walmart approached her and told her that they were interested in stocking the product. With her products already in Walmart, Debbie started to seek funding through a seed round and was able to raise a hefty amount, giving her a head start in the industry.

The pre-Covid months were highly profitable for the company, and it grew in leaps and bounds. The pandemic, though, had a pretty grim hold on Copper Cow Coffee. Debbie found most of her revenue sources like wholesale, offices, and restaurants close down, offering her no way out. That is when she decided to focus on getting her product online and in grocery stores. The plan worked, and Debbie mentioned that her company earned significant profits in 2020.

My personal favorite are the Lavender and Churro flavors that simply elevate the experience of sipping a regular cup of coffee. Overall, Copper Cow Coffees offerings are bold and delicious, and while the single use packaging does seem excessive, the filter and grounds can go in your compost bin, and the exterior packaging is recyclable.

Copper Cow Coffee’s Big Pitch – Shark Tank

Vietnamese Coffee is having a moment in my house right now. I recently reviewed Nguyen Coffee Supply, and I’ve been treating myself to the occasional coffee brewed using one of the Phin filters that came in my shipment. This method of preparation results in a rich, concentrated cup of coffee, which I really enjoy, and Copper Cow has created a way to produce the same effect without the extra equipment. It’s not too much of a hassle to make coffee with a Phin filter, but I was intrigued by Copper Cow’s innovation, and I was curious to see how their portable pour-over would work for me.

Copper Cow‘s standard coffee offering is a blend of 70% Robusta and 30% Arabica coffee beans. Robusta beans aren’t used all that frequently by American roasters, but they’re prized in Vietnam for their bold flavor and high level of caffeine. This blend is pre-ground and packaged in a ready-to-use pour-over coffee filter. Instructions for brewing are printed on the back. Here’s a description of the coffee from Copper Cow:

It may surprise you, since its “Just Black coffee but really, this one’s as rich and complex as they come. You can say its bold and blunt, straight to the point, and impossibly smooth. Left to its own devices, our black coffee really gets to showcase all the flavors that sing in our Vietnamese blend, ranging from its nutty, mocha undertones to the bite that keeps things interesting.

The round was co-led by Cultivian Sandbox and Arborview Capital with participation from Siddhi Capital, Silverton Partners, Social Starts, Montage Ventures, CRCM, and Stormbreaker Ventures.

A new generation of coffee drinkers is seeking an innovative experience and flavor profile, all-natural ingredients, and the convenience of café quality anywhere, said Carolyn Farley, principal at Arborview Capital.

Future Growth Plans: ‘pour

Copper Cow Coffee has tripled revenue annually since its debut at the 2017 Winter Fancy Food Show four years ago where it won an innovation award, and soon after entered around 1,000 brick-and-mortar retailers.

Copper Cow Coffee is currently sold direct-to-consumer through the companys website and also distributed in over 3,000 retailers including Whole Foods Market, Sprouts, and Walmart where its store placement ranges from the specialty coffee aisle to the Asian foods aisle.

Since making a hard pivot to e-commerce in the wake of the pandemic, its monthly subscription service has become the fastest-growing part of the business and a channel Mullin hopes to keep building and tailor to individual preferences.

Were really excited to invest in our coffee club. Weve been able to create a path where you can try a new flavor every month. Its a great way for you to have a perfect consistent cup of coffee but also excitement, she said.

Along with building its online presence, Mullin said Copper Cow Coffee will use the new capital injection to introduce new product innovations.

I think that the pour over is just the first expression, said Mullin, who also has the goal of making the companys supply chain as sustainable including its packaging footprint.
