Breville Double Boiler Espresso Machine

Why Should You Get A Dual Boiler

The Dual Boiler | A detailed walkthrough of your espresso machine | Breville USA

Dual boiler espresso machines use two different water boilers that each have their own heating elements: One for espresso and one for steaming. This allows the machine to heat up to two different temperatures simultaneously.

The result is much more temperature control throughout the entire brewing process since you dont have to purge water or wait for heating or cooling when going from brewing to steaming. Or vice versa.

Actually, you can steam while you brew!

If you have ever used a single boiler machine, you know how frustrating this can be.

Getting a single boiler to the right temperature is tedious, especially if youre making more than one drink.

Performance: Good Espresso Not Very Quick

To use the machine, we turned it on and waited for it to heat upit took about 10 minutes until it reached 200 degrees. Once it reached the set heat, we placed the portafilter with packed espresso grounds inside the filter into the group head on the machine. Correct dosage and tamping recommendations can be found in the manual.

Depending on which size filter was used, we selected the size of our shot and pressed the corresponding button1 cup or 2 cupto extract the shot. The extraction time in the default settings takes 30 seconds to pull the shot, but you can change that time in the more advanced settings or stop the extraction early by pressing the button again.

Theres no doubt that the Dual Boiler makes high-quality espresso. We used the default settings most of the time when making our shots, and we found that the espresso consistently tasted like what we would get from a local coffee shop.

There was consistently a crema atop the espresso, which adds a rich flavor to the shot, and the drink didnt have a burnt or dull taste as long as we properly cleaned our machine after each use. We also made cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos using the steam wand function .

However, to begin enjoying an espresso beverage, we had to wait for the machine to heat up, which can take up to 10 minutes, and thats not including the time it takes to steam milk if we wanted to make a latte or cappuccino. The time to make an espresso beverage withmilk foam was closer to 15 minutes.

Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine Overview

Up next is the Breville Dual Boiler. Breville has once again outdone itself with the Dual Boiler BES920XL espresso machine. By adhering to four key elements limiting maximum extraction pressure, low pressure pre-infusion, consistent extraction temperature and simultaneous extraction and steam the Dual Boiler BES920XL consistently and efficiently makes great espresso.

With two user-programmable PID controllers, the Dual Boiler BES920XL delivers precise water temperature to achieve optimal espresso flavor. One PID controller works with the brew boiler, while the other works with the grouphead.

Feel free to fine tune your steaming pressure thanks to added temperature control over the steam boiler and a commercial grade grouphead with an embedded element for optimal thermal stability during extraction.

The Dual Boiler BES920XL also has two pumps a 15 bar Italian pump with over-pressure valve protection that delivers water at an optimum 9 bars of pressure, as well as a 3 bar pump used exclusively to feed the steam boiler. What this means is you wont experience pressure problems at the grouphead if and when the boilers auto-fill function decides to trigger while pulling a shot.

For the coffee geek, there is a user-programmable low pressure pre-infusion feature with manual override that gradually increases water pressure to gently expand grinds for an even extraction.

The 4 Keys Formula For Third Wave Specialty Coffee At Home

1. Rich, full flavour

Full-bodied coffee with rich and complex flavours is created using the right dose of 19-22g of freshly ground beans. This dose allows the coffee to fully express the incredible aroma, intense flavours and distinctive character of the coffee, for a true cafe quality result. Anything less than the optimal dose results in a weak and watery taste experience.

2. Perfectly balanced taste

Sweet, delicious and nuanced flavour notes begin with precise control over water temperature. Digital temperature control technology precisely controls water temperature for a perfectly balanced coffee extraction, giving you the control and consistency for delicious tasting coffee every time.

3. Irresistible body

An opulent, creamy and caramel-coloured espresso starts with low pressure pre-infusion that soaks the grinds, allowing water to pass evenly through the coffee during the high pressure extraction process, delivered via our 15 bar Italian pump. This results in a rich, sweet and viscous espresso.

4. Silky, velvety mouthfeel

Savour the silky taste and velvety mouthfeel of true microfoam milk. The milk is steamed with pressure that creates thousands of tiny bubbles, enhancing flavour and mouthfeel, while the temperature brings out the milkâÂÂs sweetness, exciting your taste buds, for a harmonious blend of rich, sweet milk and syrupy, golden espresso.

As such, the Breville Dual Boiler espresso machine is for the coffee lover who is seeking to refine the espresso-making process. As the name indicates this machine has dual stainless steel boilers, which means you can both extract coffee and steam simultaneously. This is real strength and a major step up from most entry level espresso machines.

What Are Dual Boiler Espresso Machines

A dual boiler espresso machine is a coffee maker that has two internal boilers. As we mentioned above, an espresso machine with two boilers is capable of multiple functions, often simultaneously. One boiler heats water to boiling while the other heats water to brew temperature. This allows the machine to brew coffee or espresso while the other can froth milk using the steam wand.

Cleaning & Maintenance 45/5

Cleaning and maintenance is an area in which this machine shines, especially when compared to similar double boilers.

Breville upgraded the older model, the BES900, to the new BES920 and added an automatic descaling process. If youre not familiar with prosumer espresso machines, let me tell you this is a HUGE selling point for this machine. Typically descaling is a task you want to avoid altogether because it involves, for most laypeople, either shipping the machine to a dealer or taking it to a local technician both of which are expensive and time-consuming. But with the Dual Boiler, its as easy as pushing a few buttons.

Not only that, but the BES920 now ships with a water hardness test strip. Enter the test results into the machine, and it will calibrate itself to your local water to tell you exactly when you must descale. .

The boilers of the Breville Dual Boiler espresso machine are straightforward to drain, another upgrade from the last model. If you need to ship your machine somewhere, or youre putting it in storage, simply undo two screws on the outside. The boilers will drain into the drip tray a far cry from many machines requiring you to remove the outer casing and dig around inside.

Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine Review: Very Advanced

You dont have enough space: If youre short on counter space, consider the remarkably affordable Breville Bambino Plus. It doesnt offer quite as many features like the Dual Boiler. Still, this compact espresso machine has volumetric dosing, pre-infusion, automatic milk frothing and yields some very impressive drinks for its size.

Verdict: The Dual Boiler

The Dual Boiler among fans just called BDB is a unique espresso machine.

Ten years after its launch, it still occupies a prominent position in the espresso machine landscape.

Its the obvious choice if consistency and quality are what youre looking for.

If youre frustrated with your current single boiler or thermo-coil machine, you can upgrade to this device and say goodbye to all frustrations.

But thats also the downside of the Breville Dual Boiler.

In most ways, its an end-game espresso machine, and its expensive enough that most people would consider it as such. But on the other hand, many coffee lovers would probably still have that nagging doubt and consider if the grass would be greener with an Italian brass and steel model.

The thing is that espresso makers are also about identity. While most people end up going with sensible, when it comes to getting a car, things are different in the coffee domain. Here you can afford to be a bit reckless. If you want a statement piece, its a lot easier to justify.

But for the confident coffee geek, whos not ready to splurge on a Decent, you wont get better espresso from a domestic machine in this price range and a good step above.
