Still the timing of Starbucks price increase had me skeptically raising a brow. On May 29, Starbucks closed 8,000 locations for anti-bias training, an initiative that followed the wrongful arrest of two black men in a Philadelphia Starbucks last April. Are the associated costs with the incident, training and temporary closures in some way being pushed on to the consumer?
Starbucks asserts that the training is unrelated to the price increase.
This price adjustment was not related to last weeks store closures and trainings, said the spokesperson.
Experts unaffiliated with Starbucks suggest that this is likely true.

Starbucks continually evaluates pricing on a product-by-product and market-by-market basis, a spokesperson for the brand told NBC News BETTER in an email. In some countries, a latte hits the wallet only a little harder than in the U.S. The froth-friendly nations include Australia, the U.K., New Zealand, and Canada. Here, Starbucks represents something less than a big indulgence.
But stepping up to the Starbucks counter in the most costly countries feels like a far bigger extravagance. Nothing matches the luxe indulgence of ordering a latte in Russia, where the tab would feel like spending $12 for the drink here at home. In the other pricier countries for Starbucks, including India, Indonesia, and Thailand, the sticker shock would be more akin to spending $7 or so at home.
The Battle Over Nonfat Milk Offerings
Speaking of customizing drinks, the early Starbucks stores werent quite as accommodating.
Howard Behar, an executive who came to Starbucks in 1989, was troubled to learn that many customers were requesting the option of nonfat milk for their lattés or cappuccinos.
But Schultz and his team were dogged in their stance that nonfat milk detracted from the authenticity of their Italian heritage. Nobody drank a nonfat cappuccino in Italy!
Behar felt that they should honor these customers requests. But Schultzs passion for the true experience was shared by store managers who protested to offering the nonfat option.
Nevertheless, when Schultz personally witnesses a customer leave over the lack of this option, he had a change of heart. And now, its estimated that half of the cappuccinos and lattés they sell are nonfat.
