Following is a simple cold brew iced coffee recipe. Note that iced coffee is typically different than cold brew as it uses a hot brew. However, cold brew is often also enjoyed with ice to keep it chilled for your enjoyment.
To start making your own cold brew, you will need to begin with your favorite roast. Be sure to heavily ground it before use so it does not cloud the water during the process.
Then, you will want to find a container to make it in. I recommend making it in a quart sized mason jar or 2 quart mason jar, but you can find all sorts of pitchers and mason jar accessories on Amazon.
I really like this cold brew coffee pitcher. I had one similar to this, and it’s easier to use since you don’t need to strain out the coffee grounds.
Unfortunately, mine cracked a broke. Now I’m back to making cold brew coffee in a mason jar.
Gently stir the grounds and water together and then cover the container with a plastic wrap. Let it sit for twelve to twenty four hours. Open it up and taste it every few hours until it is as sweet as you prefer it. Once it is to your liking, dump the grounds.
You can also buy a 2 quart mason jar and filter set. I already had a 2 quart jar, but this is a great deal.
Cold Brew And Iced Coffee: Whats The Difference
The first thing you should know is that any coffee served over ice is iced coffee. Beyond that there are more or less 4 different ways to brew iced coffee cold brew, hot bloom cold brew, flash chilled iced coffee, and iced coffee. Technically all of these methods are a version of iced coffee, but all are different in how they are brewed and the resulting taste profile.
Iced coffee is the more classic version of cold coffee, and one that all of our parents and grandparents likely drank during the hot summer months. Traditionally, iced coffee was made by brewing coffee hot and after it got cold, youd pour it over ice to chill it and make a cold coffee drink. Unfortunately, this method isnt that great. As the coffee sits, it begins to oxidize, so by the time its poured over ice, the iced coffee is usually a bitter mess than screams for milk and sugar, but by the time you add them, you cant taste any coffee flavor. By brewing the coffee directly over ice, were able to capture and preserve those wonderful nuances found in hot brewed coffee, but in a clean, sweet iced coffee, ideal for slow sipping. We find that brighter and more nuanced coffees work really well for this, so grab your favorite coffee from Guatemala, El Salvador, Ethiopia or Kenya, and its sure to taste fantastic as a Flash Chilled Iced coffee, with vibrant acidity and a delicate mouthfeel.

Cold brew, like hot brew, can be made to preference. There are a number of cold brew coffee ratios out there, but over time Ive found what I like best. This is something you can play with and adjust, but my best cold brew coffee ratio is:
one part coffee to four parts water
OR: 1/4 cup ground coffee to 1 cup of water
This ratio produces a homemade cold brew coffee concentrate which then can be used to make my cold brew iced coffee recipe. This cold brew concentrate can be cut with water, or milk du jour and sweetener of choice or enjoy it straight.

Drinks To Make With Cold
1. Mix it with chai tea for a spicy but smooth beverage.
2. Add a shot to hot chocolate, milkshakes, or anything involving chocolate or vanilla. Instant mocha!
3. Blend it into your morning smoothie.
4. Cold-brewed coffee + sparkling water + a few drops of vanilla extract = a great coffee soda. For a mocha soda, stir in a splash of chocolate extract.

Which Is The Best Coffee For Making Cold Brew
To some extent, the right coffee beans to choose for cold brew will depend on how you plan use it.
A typical espresso blend can work ok if youre planning to add milk to the finished product. However, something roasted lighter, like a filter roast or a light espresso roast, is usually better for serving straight up.
In terms of origins for me, the heavy body & fruity flavours of natural or honey-processed coffees tend to work better with cold coffee brewing. For example, the deep fruity sweetness of an Ethiopian natural or the heavy chocolate flavours of a Brazil Pulped-Natural are right on the money in a cold brew.
On the other hand, the more delicate, refined acidity of washed Central American coffees just dont seem to show their potential in cold brewing. You might be best to save these coffees for hot water brewing.

How Long To Steep Cold Brew Coffee
Once your coffee and water are well mixed, let the mixture sit for 12-18 hours to allow the coffee to infuse into the water. The ideal time to steep your cold brew is between 14 and 18 hours. This will give you the best cold brew flavor without the bitterness that could come from steeping too long.
You can either steep your cold brew on your counter at room temperature or in your refrigerator.

Can I Strain The Cold Brew Using Paper Filters Instead
Definitely! I’ve found that the coffee filters veerrrryyyy sloooowwwwly through paper filters though, so have some patience. Stir the grounds occasionally since they compact over time, which slows down the straining process even more.
The upside to your patience is that you get very smooth coffee with zero grounds when you strain using a filter.
How To Serve Cold Brew
After letting your cold brew steep, you strain it and then youll have cold brew concentrate! Play around with how much water you need to dilute it based on how strong you like your coffee. I recommend using equal parts coffee concentrate to water so I would do a cup of ice with 1/2 cup cold brew concentrate with 1/2 cup of cold water. If you want your coffee a bit stronger Id do 3/4 cup cold brew concentrate with 1/4 cup water. Add milk, cream and sugar to your liking and enjoy!
Like I mentioned earlier, you can serve this warm or cold. If you want a warm cup of coffee simply add hot water or milk to the concentrate or pop your cup in the microwave.

Plan Ahead To Properly Cold Brew
There are a couple of ways to make iced coffee, hot and cold brews. I used to just refrigerate the coffee that was left over in the coffee pot, but its definitely not as good as a cold brew! Now that Im on my own and the only one drinking coffee in the morning, Ive abandoned my coffee pot for a French press and make one delicious cup at a time now.
Cold brewing takes a little planning. Basically, you will prepare the coffee and then it has to steep for a minimum of 8 hours or overnight. Its totally worth the wait though, and you can make a good-sized batch, depending on how much you drink. Cold brew coffee is usually good in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Why Does My Cold Brew Taste Weak
If your cold brew tastes weak, there could be a couple reasons for it. First, make sure it has steeped for up to twenty four hours. Trying to speed that part of the process up might make for weak cold brew.
Further, make sure you are using enough grounds and not too much water. If your cold brew tastes especially weak you can always add more grounds.

Can I Reuse Cold Brew Coffee Grounds
Reusing cold brew coffee grounds is possible, but your cold brew will not be as strong. Instead, I recommend that you compost it for a different use rather than try to use it again.
However, in a pinch it can still be used. Just be sure to use more coffee grounds than you normally would or use less water. It may also take longer to steep to your preferred flavor, which is important to keep in mind.
Some coffee grounds are more potent, and work better than others when reused in a cold brew iced coffee recipe. However, you should still use a coffee that you enjoy.
Why Is Cold Brew More Expensive Than Iced Coffee
The cost of cold brew may be off-putting to you. Why pay $5 for a cup of cold brew when you can get regular hot coffee for $2?
Hot coffee can be brewed up in minutes, taking very little time and effort- not to mention, it does not require a lot of beans to make a cup of coffee.
Cold brew, on the other hand, requires significantly more beans to produce and takes 12-24 hours to brew.
The combination of time, labor, and coffee beans make cold brew a bit pricier . In that case, it makes sense why cold brew is more expensive, but why in the world is iced coffee more expensive than regular brewed coffee? I mean, its just hot brew poured over ice, right?
Thats the million-dollar question.
Iced coffee is a scam.
There, I said it.
Its just one of those unfair things in life we have the accept.
Theoretically, iced coffee should be cheaper than hot coffee once you add ice, youre not only diluting the coffee, but getting less coffee per cup vs hot coffee.
Life hack: If the iced coffee is significantly more expensive, order a regular coffee and ask for ice on the side. Once you let the coffee cool for a few minutes, you can pour it over the ice and have yourself some cheaper iced coffee!

Combine With Cold Water
Once the beans are ground, its time to combine them with water . There are several ways to go about this, depending on what you have available to you at home. The most important part is finding a vessel that is large enough to hold the beans and water at the ratio you choose .
I like using a quart-sized wide-mouth mason jar to brew my cold brew. It does hold a little less water than Id like for the perfect ratio, but its super convenient. You can also use a large quart glass measuring cup, bowl, or pitcher. Another option you might have is to use a French Press. Then, when its time to strain, you simply have to press down on the filter.
Pour the water over the grinds in whichever vessel you choose, ensuring the grounds are all wet . You can also use a spoon to gently press the grounds down once youve added the water to ensure they are thoroughly wet .
It’s Smoother Than Regular Coffee
While I love a cappuccino or an iced latte, cold brew is one of my go-tos because it is so much smoother than hotbrewed coffee or espresso. Traditionally, coffee is made quickly with boiling water to create a delicious, hotbrew. If you want a cold beverage, the coffee or espresso is simply poured over ice. While this is definitely a tasty option, you can sometimes end up with an overly-acidic, too-strong iced coffee.
To make cold brew, you mix ground coffee and water and let it steep for 12-24 hours. All coffee beans contain oils where fatty acids are stored, and these oils are best extracted using hot temperatures. The cold, slow brewing process prevents many of the oils stored in coffee beans from being fully extracted, meaning that the acids contained within them aren’t present in the final product.
