Yes, you can. In fact, protein coffee is attributed with many of the same health perks as keto coffee .

What Is Protein Coffee

Like the name implies, protein coffee is either protein powder that contains a coffee flavor and caffeine or coffee that you add protein powder to.

Although it depends on your preferences, most people consume it as an iced/chilled beverage that is made with coffee-flavored protein powder, since most powders usually dissolve well in in cool liquids .

Protein is a macronutrient that helps power muscles, supports muscle growth and strength, and assists in exercise recovery. This is exactly why protein powders are popular among athletes and bodybuilders and why theyre also recommended for many active adults who are looking to grow and maintain muscle mass.

Coffee nutrition alone does not provide you with protein . It only has about five calories per cup and almost no fat, protein or carbs.

Many people choose to drink protein coffee before workouts or in the morning to help keep hunger in check. While caffeine may be less beneficial after a workout, protein powder following exercise can help with muscle recovery and support a healthy metabolism.

Others like to sip on caffeinated drinks throughout the day to quench their appetite, although there are pros and cons to this approach.

To make protein coffee at home, you can either use a coffee-based protein supplement mixed with water or milk, or you can simply add your favorite protein powder to freshly brewed coffee.

Whether you like having protein coffee cold or hot is up to you and may depend on when and where you drink it.

What is the best protein coffee? It all comes down to the quality of the ingredients you use.

There are loads of different protein powders available such as whey, casein, hemp, pea and other plant proteins, along with collagen but all types are not created equal.

For the most benefits, consider using a quality protein powder, such as collagen, hemp or bone broth. Look for one that is made with non-GMO ingredients, no added sugar or fillers and thats sourced from humanely raised animals if its not a vegan product.

Why You Should Not Have Caffeine In Your Protein Shake

Several experts, including the FDA, say that 400 mg of caffeine is generally considered a safe amount for healthy adults. So, consider this a rule of thumb:

Dont put coffee in your protein shake if youre already drinking a lot of caffeine.

Itll be pretty obvious if youve had too much because youll be jittery, anxious, nauseous, your heart will beat faster, and you might even have a headache.

Also, some people are more sensitive to caffeine than other people. I know for a fact that Im one of those people, so my caffeine limit falls below the 400 mg mark. If youre like this, too, dont push it. Your health always comes first.

Having said that, its time for the main event.

Any chilled coffee will work in this recipe! So pick your favorite coffee. I actually created this recipe with room temp coffee from my morning pot of coffee, but now that I use a Keurig for single brew I often will just toss in cold brew or unsweetened iced coffee from the jug.

BTW, I LOVE Starbucks Blonde Roast and that I can buy this at the grocery for a fraction of what it would cost me if I were to go to Starbucks for an iced coffee.

Easy Protein Iced Coffee Recipe

Making a protein iced latte or protein iced coffee is really the simplest recipe on earth. The recipe isnt as important as just the idea on making a protein coffee as well as tips to make sure it tastes right.

I wanted a healthy alternative to a mocha iced latte and this is it! I recently got an espresso machine and when I started making my own mochas I noticed just how much chocolate syrup was needed to make a mocha!

Here I was getting my own espresso machine to avoid additional ingredients and sugars you would find in cans or at coffee shops. However, I then would be adding what seemed like 1/4 a cup of chocolate syrup to make it taste like good iced mocha.

And from here the idea popped into my head. Why dont I use chocolate protein powder as a healthy alternative replacement to chocolate syrup and bang, amazing.

I had no idea protein powder would work so well as a replacement and I dont notice the difference at all. It even gives it a bit more of a smooth frothy texture as well.

Cafe Mocha Protein Shake

This, I got from Jennifer Meyering and it calls for 1 and ½ scoop of protein powder. Specifically, 1 scoop of vanilla whey and half a scoop of chocolate whey.

Needless to say, this recipe is packed full of protein. Depending on the brand of protein you use, maybe even more so than The Protein Chefs ice coffee

This recipe also uses cold brew coffee. If you dont know how to do that, its actually very simple and Jenn has another guide to help you out. Other ingredients youll need include unsweetened almond milk and, of course, ice.

Is This Coffee Sweet

Depending on the protein you use for your proffee, you may need to adjust the sweetness. I typically use a vanilla protein powder and find that its sweet enough and tastes just like a vanilla latte!

However, if you are using a less sweet or unflavored powder, you may want to stir in a bit of sweetener like stevia, monkfruit, or Purecane with the protein powder.
