Youll need to make espresso for a cappuccino: simply strong coffee will not do! This means youll need the following:

  • Espresso roast coffee: The roast is important to get the right dark, bitter flavor. Also make sure to use a fine grind on the espresso when you make it.
  • Espresso machine, manual espresso maker, or Aeropress: There are several ways to make espresso. We use an espresso machine, which sits on a countertop. Or you can use a small manual espresso maker: its cheaper and portable! The cheapest option is an Aeropress: it doesnt make nearly as good of espresso, but it does the job. Go to Aeropress Espresso.

Which Coffee Roasts Work Best In A Cappuccino

Theres no definitive answer to this question since everyone has their own preferences when it comes to coffee.

However, good-quality espresso beans are usually best for cappuccinos since they have a more robust flavor that can stand up to the milk and foam.

With that said, experimentation is key, so feel free to try out different types of coffee roasts until you find your perfect cappuccino recipe!

I like to use either a medium or dark roast for my cappuccinos. A light roast doesnt have the strength to cut through the milk, so a darker roast is the way to go.

If you are simply looking for a good coffee to use in a cappuccino, then any dark roast coffee will work well.

A dark roast has more body and darkness, which will help balance out the sweetness of the milk and sugar in a cappuccino.

Some examples of good dark roast coffees include French roasts, Italian roasts, or extra dark roasts.

Some Helpful Tips: Making A Cappuccino Without A Machine

Making cappuccinos is not easy even when you have a professional-grade espresso machine, so dont get discouraged if the first few attempts dont go according to plan. With practice, your frothing technique will improve, and youll start to get more of the creamy texture you typically find in a cappuccino.

The elephant in the room is crema. Without a real espresso machine, youll never be able to generate crema since it only forms by brewing finely ground coffee with high pressure. Even so, this doesnt mean you cant craft an excellent faux-cappuccino. The most important part of imitating a cappuccino is the milk, so dont slack on practicing your frothing technique.

If you cant seem to get the frothing right, there is a trick you can use if you have a French press. Pour heated milk preferably around 155°F into your French press and use the plunger to agitate the milk rapidly. This method is far less labor-intensive but loses some of the control you have with a whisk. It is a great option if you dont feel like frothing entirely by hand with a whisk.

Even without an espresso machine, you could pick up a cheap steam wand to make your life easier. A steam wand will make frothing milk far easier and more consistent than either whisking by hand or using a French press.

    • You can also use 2% milk. It works fairly well, but you lose a bit of the richness.

Traditionally, a good cappuccino is a mixture of frothiness, milk, and espresso. It has a strong coffee flavor but not to the point of being bitter. The ratio of the ingredients to make the best cappuccino should be equal thirds of coffee, sugar, and milk.

This means the milk to coffee ratio should be espresso, steamed milk, milk foam.

Since cappuccino is usually made with frothy milk, it passes the health factor. It can be considered healthy if you enjoy it with low-fat milk. Other types of coffee like latte and flat whites have higher calorie counts.

How To Steam Milk With An Espresso Machine

The tool you need to steam milk? An espresso machine with a steamer! This makes the best foam for a cappuccino, and steaming milk also adds a sweet creaminess to the flavor. You dont have to worry about the technique of microfoam like for the perfect latte, but its still nice to have an espresso machine for this coffee drink.

The downside? Espresso machines can be pricey. Heres the espresso machine we use: its middle of the road price-wise and works great. But you can also make a cappuccino by simply frothing milk with a whisk: see below! Heres how to steam milk for a cappuccino:

    • Hold the steaming wand just below the surface of the milk until it doubles in size and is very foamy.
    • Lower the steaming wand slightly until the milk reaches 150 degrees Fahrenheit: use a thermometer or judge by when your hand cant hold the pitcher for more than a few seconds.

For A Cappuccino At Its Best:

    • Pour cold milk into a metal steaming pitcher, about a third full
    • Release steam from the steaming wand for two seconds to eliminate any residual water
    • Dip the tip of the steaming wand into milk and start frothing. As the foam rises and the volume of milk increases, lower the pitcher, always keeping the tip submerged and tilted to create a vortex. Do not mix unnecessarily
    • Continue steaming until the milk reaches 65 degrees and its volume doubles
    • Tap the base of the pitcher firmly on the countertop to compress the foam
    • Prepare an espresso in a large cup
    • Pour the foamed milk directly into the cup, first aiming for the center, then continuing in a circular motion out toward the rim
    • Operate the steam one more time to eliminate any remaining milk residue

People assume the steps to make a cappuccino are complicated but this recipe is easy to make and tastes amazing too.

Perhaps one of the reasons people think its hard to make cappuccino at home is because in North America, this frothy hot beverage has only been around for the past few decades. It wasnt until the 1930s that Cappuccinos became really popular in the States.

However, in Europe, cappuccino has been around for hundreds of years and of course the cappuccino recipe has been refined and perfected during that time.

Hot cappuccino as we know it today has been around since the 1900s and was first made in Italy, after the espresso machines were invented.

Early espresso machines were extremely bulky, heavy and expensive so only trained professionals could use them. Over time, espresso machines became simpler to use and the design was improved and refined. Once these machines became more accessible, more and more restaurants, diner and donut shops began serving espressos, lattes and cappuccinos, at any time of day!

These hot beverages became popularized in mass culture, and were no longer solely reserved for those who were part of the more elite coffee culture.
