Easy Iced Coffee | Learn how to make iced coffee with instant coffee – and in less than five minutes. The quickest way of making iced coffee is to use instant coffee granules, because it dissolves instantly, so there is no waiting time for coffee to brew. With this little hack, you use less hot water, so there is literally no cooling time, just delicious, strong iced instant coffee.
So you want to make yourself and your besties some iced coffee to combat the hellfire temperatures this summer? Me too!
What if you don’t have an espresso machine or even a percolator? Instant coffee granules to the rescue! You’ll have cafe-style cold drinks in no time and your guests will name you their new favorite barista, I’m sure of it.
Cold coffee is usually made with shots of espresso, cold water, and then milk or cream. But you can switch out the espresso for a strong mix of instant coffee – no special tools are needed besides a kettle or microwave for heating the water. Easy peasy. Making iced coffee with instant coffee takes only a few minutes!

How Do You Make Iced Coffee
Youll need a tall glass and a spoon long enough to reach the bottom of that glass.
Fill that glass full to the rim with ice. If you really want to get serious about your iced coffee, you can make ice cubes out of coffee too. Then you wont get that watered-down effect. And if youre into that flavored sort of coffee then go for it.
Pour room temperature coffee into the glass.
Fill it almost to the top.
Pour in the white stuff. Heres where you get to make a big decision. Do you want to go all out and make this a decadent treat? If so, then add cream or half & half. If you want to go a little lighter, use whole milk or fat-free half & half. And lighter still, use nonfat milk.
Take a moment to watch the swirls sink to the bottom and mix in with the coffee. Its a magical moment. ð
Add a couple spoonfuls of sugar or whatever sort of sweetener you usually add to your coffee. In the recipe notes below, I share how to make sugary simple syrup in case you prefer to use that instead of granulated white sugar.
Stir it all up!
Add a purple straw. If youre a straw person, that is. And drink up!
How Do You Make Iced Coffee Not Watery

If you want to prevent your iced coffee from turning watery, you can best brew a batch of coffee the night before and placing it in the fridge overnight. This way, youll not have to cool down your hot coffee using ice cubes, as this makes your coffee watery.
Another way to keep your iced coffee from going watery is by using coffee ice cubes at home. To do so, brew a big batch of coffee and let it cool completely. Then, pour the coffee in an ice cube tray or an ice cube bag and freeze it.
These coffee ice cubes will prevent your iced coffee from watering down when youre enjoying your coffee in the sun.

How To Make Vietnamese Iced Coffee
Vietnamese iced coffee is made using a phin, which is also known as a coffee filter press. If you do not have a phin you can brew your coffee as you would normally do. Pour condensed milk to the bottom of a mug usually, about 2 tablespoons. Pour hot coffee over the condensed milk and mix to incorporate the ingredients. The sugar in the condensed milk is what will give this drink the key flavour. Add ice to a tall glass and pour the mixture of coffee and condensed milk on top in order to chill the coffee. Vietnamese iced coffee is usually served with a straw.

I mean, imagine a nice summer morning, maybe a Saturday. Just being lazy, pajamas and everything, and you make your own iced coffee and sip it on the balcony/porch/what have you, in the sun.
At least, that’s what I’m looking forward to.
Right, before we start with the recipe let’s get a couple of things straight.
Brewing Tips: Stronger Is Better
The most important factor for making good iced coffee at home is strength. A common error people make when brewing iced coffee is using the same recipe they would use to brew hot coffee and then adding ice at the end. The problem with this method is the ice cubes melt and water down your coffee resulting in a weak, bland cup.
One way to avoid weak iced coffee is to make coffee ice cubes, but another way that we prefer is to make your coffee stronger from the start. Most hot coffee recipes recommend using between a 15:1 and 17:1 water-to-coffee ratio. For iced coffee, we like to use more coffee and typically aim for between a 12:1 and 15:1 water-to-coffee ratio.

What Type Of Ice Is Best For Iced Coffee

I know this may not seem important but choosing the right ice for your iced coffee is key! Here are your options:
- Crushed ice this is what you see in this recipe. Because I had a ton of coffee to make I picked up a big bag of crushed ice and used it liberally. This is typically what I use for iced coffee
- Medium-sized ice cubes this is usually what people have on hand in their freezer and I say go for it!
- Large ice I like to use larger blocks of ice if I’m going to enjoy my iced coffee outside. They are slower to melt this way!

Making The Iced Mocha
This chocolate iced mocha is made very similarly to the vanilla latte, and you probably already have the main ingredient at home: cocoa powder! Make the simple syrup from the Vanilla recipe above, mix in a tablespoon of cocoa, and youre good to go. Start with an empty cup full of ice, pour your espresso shots overtop, mix in some milk and some chocolate syrup. Super easy!
If you really want to take this iced mocha over the top, you could also use chocolate milk, or even add in a little mint extract to make it an iced peppermint mocha. Amazing combo right?! There are so many ways to get creative with iced coffee!

How To Make Iced Coffee Without A Coffee Machine
You can make iced coffee easy even if you dont have a coffee machine. All you really need is a pot, some filtered water, coffee grounds, a strainer, and ice.
As mentioned above, youll want to be careful not to shock your ice filled cup/glass when pouring in the hot coffee. By using a thermal shock resistant mug/glass you can avoid that. The following iced coffee recipe will give you similar results as using a french press coffee machine.

How To Make Iced Coffee
Making delicious iced coffee at home is a cinch. Best of all, the secret to the best coffee is to eliminate heat from the process altogether. Cold-processed coffee is less bitter, and it allows you to control the dilution of the final product. We used Peet’s Baridi blend coffee beans, which are specially roasted for iced coffee, but any beans you like will do. Give the beans a few bursts in a coffee grinder, to a medium grind. Add 1/4 cup of the grinds to every cup of water you will use.
Add room-temperature water to the coffee grounds, and stir to combine. Cover with a lid, and leave the coffee at room temperature, agitating periodically, for 12 hours or overnight.
Strain the coffee through a coffee filter. Discard the grinds and the filter.
Meanwhile, make a simple syrup by combining equal parts granulated sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow to cool, pour into a bottle, then refrigerate.
If desired, dilute the coffee by up to 50 percent water. Pour over ice, and add simple syrup and cream to your taste.
How I Tested These Iced Coffee Methods
I rounded up some of the most popular methods for making iced coffee from coffee brewing and kitchen equipment basics no fancy cold brew systems here. I used the same brand of coffee, Illys Classico Whole Bean Blend, across every method. I freshly ground the beans for every batch, varying the coarseness as each method required. For example, the bold brew method requires a coarse grind, while the moka pot method uses a finer grind. I taste tested all these methods on the same day by preparing the overnight methods in advance, and then I completed the moka pot, Japanese pour over, and Aeropress methods the next day and tasted them with my husband at the same time. I first tasted every technique plain with ice .

How Is Iced Coffee Different From Regular Coffee
Iced coffee and regular coffee are essentially the same things. Iced coffee is regular coffee but cooled completely and served on ice, with optionally a touch of milk or a sweetener added.
You can make regular coffee and iced coffee with the same brewing techniques. So the only significant difference between these two versions is that one is served on ice, and the other is drunk hot.

Its helpful to know that the longer coffee brews in hot water, the more bitter it can become, good strong coffee should brew quickly. Ideally, you want a fast brew, and a quick ice time when making iced coffee.
As mentioned above, coffee can also take on a bitter flavor the longer it sits around at room temperature. But this can depend on the type of coffee you use, and your personal taste preferences.
So while the general rule when making iced coffee from hot coffee is to cool it down as soon as possible, you can play around with it and see what works best for you.
