Open Thread: Crofton Cold Brew Coffee System

This post is an open thread and contains affiliate links.

Aldi is a great place to get your coffee fix. The grocer sells various coffees and creamers, and they also rotate different types of coffee makers and other gadgets that make caffeinated beverages onto their shelves. Over the years, Aldi has sold a single serve coffee maker, a 12-cup programmable coffee maker, and even an espresso maker. Aldi also sometimes sells coffee accessories such as a milk frother.

Aldi has been known to sell cold brew coffee makers at different times as well. Aldi sold an electric Ambiano Cold Brew Coffee Maker for $39.99 in 2019. Weve also seen a less expensive non-electric Crofton Cold Brew Coffee System several times. That less pricey cold brew coffee system has returned to Aldi again, and were taking a look at it here.

Cold brew coffee as the name suggests is coffee that has been brewed with cold or room-temperature water rather than hot water. It has a longer steeping time of approximately 12-24 hours, so patience is important. Cold brew coffee has a flavor that is smooth, rich, and heavy, with low acidity. Cold brew is different from iced coffee, which is simply coffee made hot and then cooled and poured over ice.

    Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

How to use the Crofton Cold Brew Coffee System

The OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker is sold with a handful of optional paper filters, which you can use in addition to the reusable mesh filter. The company says these filters arent required but can help to create a smoother brew with less silt at the bottom. In our 2020 tests with the paper filter in place, we didnt notice any problems with draining, and we havent heard any concerns about blockage from our long-term testers. But when we used the paper filters in our 2016 tests, the OXO didnt drain properly: It almost immediately slowed to a drip, and we got only a few ounces of concentrate because a silty mudflat of grounds covering the paper blocked its flow. An OXO representative had confirmed a slower drain time with the paper filter in place, but he said hed never seen the stream completely stop, as it did in our original tests. The manual does recommend using coarse grinds, so following that instruction may prevent these issues.

Also, the OXOs glass carafe is admittedly less durable than the Filtrons plastic one. But if yours breaks, you can purchase a replacement for $20.

Best Budget: County Line Kitchen Cold Brew Mason Jar Coffee Maker

If you have a rustic or country aesthetic, the County Line Kitchen Cold Brew Coffee Maker is a beautiful match for your kitchen, and it comes at a budget price. The design of this Mason jar may be simple, but the item is durable, efficient, and makes great coffee.

Not only is this cold brew maker stylish, but its a simple, foolproof system for easy cold brew. Put coffee into the stainless steel filter, add water, and allow it to steep overnight. After testing the item firsthand, our reviewer found it “super easy to use and setup” and added that it is “definitely worth buying.”

The jar can hold up to 2 quarts of coffee, and the silicone seal makes sure the lid stays on tightly. Our product tester noted that the filter successfully keeps coffee grinds out of the liquid and that both the steeper and jar are incredibly durable. The only thing to watch out for is that the “instructions for making the cold brew are pretty vague.” Our tester was forced to “look up a recipe online that wasn’t necessarily fitted to this specific cold brew maker.”

Cold brew coffee makers generally rely on one of two brewing methods. The first style, known as immersion brewing, involves steeping coffee grounds in cold water anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. The second is a drip process that also takes several hours. Both methods infuse cold brew with a sweet, often chocolaty taste while avoiding the bitterness and high acidity found in hot coffee.

We sent cold brew coffee makers to our expert food writers so they could put them through our comprehensive testing process. They evaluated each one on its usability, design, performance, and value to help customers find the best option for their coffee needs.

    Who This Is For

How to Make Iced Coffee | Review Crofton Cold Brew Coffee System

If you like the flavor of cold brew and drink it often, you may find that a dedicated machine produces the best-tasting results in bigger batches and is easier to use and clean up after than any other method.

You might be wondering whether a cold-brew setup is worth the moneyor the space in your kitchenif you already have tools for brewing hot coffee. The short answer is yes. There are real reasons cold brew has gained popularity in recent years brewing with slow, cold exposure results in a sweeter, milder-tasting coffee, low on bitterness and acidity. Also, the method generally produces a concentrate that, with the addition of some combination of water, ice, milk and/or cream, still provides a very flavorful cup compared with hot coffee, which dilutes considerably once you add ice. Drinking hot-brewed coffee iced can also bring out bitter flavors that are less noticeable when the coffee is hot.

Every cold-brew coffee method works the same way: Start with a lot of ground coffee , add water, let the mixture sit between eight and 24 hours, and then filter it. The resulting liquid is usually a concentrate that you should dilute with water or milk .

You can also make cold-brew concentrate with a French press or other tools you may already own, such as a Mason jar plus a strainer, cheesecloth, or nut-milk bag. But most of those methods require a lot more work for less satisfying results .

Also Great: Oxo Compact Cold Brew Coffee Maker

The OXO Compact Cold Brew Coffee Maker is a smaller version of our top pick. Coffee from the OXO Compact was stronger than what we brewed with the regular-size OXO but still well balanced and not overly bitter. We found the OXO Compact even easier to use than our other picks because it has fewer parts and a streamlined design. It takes up less space on a counter but of course makes less coffee.

Coffee from the OXO Compact was full-bodied and chocolatey without being overly bitter or acidic. It didnt taste as balanced or floral as coffee brewed with the regular OXO, but we still enjoyed drinking it, and overall we didnt notice a huge difference between coffee from the OXO Compact versus the regular OXO. And, as with all concentrate, you can dilute the coffee to your preference.

The OXO Compact calls for 6.5 ounces of coffee and 24 ounces of water, whereas the regular OXO calls for 10 ounces of coffee grounds and 40 ounces of water. The Compact should yield around 16 ounces of concentrate , or about eight servings of coffee, once diluted according to OXOs suggestion of 2 ounces of concentrate to 4 to 6 ounces of water. Meanwhile, the regular OXO makes at least 24 ounces of concentrate , yielding about 12 to 16 servings. Each makes about the same amount of cold brew per ounce of grounds.

Best Automatic: Cuisinart Automatic Cold Brew Coffeemaker

    • Fragile filter basket

    • Loud while brewing

The majority of cold brew coffee makers are low-tech and take a long time to steep. Not so with the Cuisinart Automatic Cold Brew Coffeemaker. Though a little pricey, it can whip up a 7-cup batch of cold brew in 25 to 45 minutes. The exact brew time depends on what strength you prefer the cold brew to bemild, medium, or bold. Even on the longest setting, however, the item far outpaces the multiple hours it takes to use most cold brew makers.

And don’t be daunted by the automated design. This machine is extremely intuitive and actually works similar to a standard drip coffee maker: scoop the grounds into the filter, fill the water reservoir, and hit go.

One downside is that the machine is fairly noisy while brewing this may be especially frustrating since it takes longer than a normal drip coffee maker to brew. On top of that, several customers faced issues with the filter basket, saying it’s on the fragile side. There are certainly pros and cons to consider with the Cuisinart Automatic Cold Brew Coffeemaker, but if you want a versatile and lightning-fast machine that does the work for you, this is the top option.

How To Clean The Rest Of The Crofton Cold Brew Coffee Maker

Dont throw any of this in the dishwasher there have been multiple reports of people cracking their cold brew coffee carafes. Its easy enough to quickly hand-wash the various parts of ALDIs cold brew coffee system, since all you ever have in there is water and coffee.

Is Cold Brew Less Acidic Than Other Coffee

Yes, cold brew is less acidic than other forms of coffee, whether it be traditional iced coffee or drip. Since cold brew is made by using cold water instead of hot, the coffee beans dont release the same amount of oil that they would if brewed at higher temperatures. One last quick tip: dark roast coffee beans are less acidic than light roast coffee beans, so consider giving those a shot if you want even less acidity in your cold brew.

    Is It A Good Deal

Priced at just $12.99 Aldis Cold Brew Pitcher is priced very competitively compared to other options online. With a glass pitcher and stainless steel filter it is made of quality materials that should last a long time. Just dont drop it! It is hard to determine a direct comparison without knowing what the actual volume of the pitcher is. We are only told it makes 4 servings of cold brew coffee. Typically a serving of coffee is considered 6-8 ounces. If we assume they are going with 8 ounce servings that would be 32 oz or 1 quart .

Similar cold brew pitchers are selling for about $18-$30 online. The best priced option with good reviews that I found was the Primula Burke Deluxe Cold Brew Iced Coffee Maker for $17.99. It is slightly larger than the Crofton at 6 cups / 1.6 quarts and is dishwasher safe. Another popular option is the Takeya Deluxe Cold Brew Pitcher for around $27. This option is plastic which means less likely to break it but it is more expensive. As of writing this the 1 liter option and the 2 liter option are about the same price, so the 2L is not a bad price compared to Aldis cold brewer .
