All cohort members completed a detailed, semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire . Descriptions of the development and validation of this questionnaire were published previously . The daily intake of specific foods and nutrients was calculated from the FFQ for each participant with the use of FOODCALC software . Standard recipes and sex-specific portion sizes were applied to calculate intake in grams per day by using data from different sourcesie, the 1995 Danish National Dietary Survey , 24-h diet recall interviews from 3818 of the study participants , and various cook books. We summed the daily intake of caffeine from coffee, tea, cola, cocoa, and chocolate for each subject.

Although the research doesnt currently support a link between caffeine and arrhythmias, if you find caffeine seems to worsen the condition, consider cutting down.
There are patients who may be sensitive to caffeine and note the onset of palpitations or worsening palpitations with low or any caffeine intake, Van Herle says. I usually advise my patients with palpitations that are worsened with caffeine to cut down if they can and reassure others with arrhythmias, that are not affected by caffeine, that they can continue to use it in moderate amounts.
But there might be one exception to the caffeine rule for heart health. In general I do advise my patients to stay away from high energy drinks that contain very high caffeine content, Van Herle adds.

New Study Aims to Address The Myths And Anxiety Around Caffeine Consumption Among Heart Rhythm Patients
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 2020 A new study reveals that drinking a couple of daily cups of coffee does not lead to a greater risk of arrhythmias, potentially debunking a common myth that consuming caffeine in coffee and other drinks could lead to a faster heartbeat and the potential for a triggered arrhythmia for this patient population. Researchers analyzed several types of arrhythmias to better understand the impact of caffeine on this common heart condition. Results from this observational study were released today as part of Heart Rhythm Society 2020 Science.
Americans are dependent on their daily dose of caffeine, with more than 64 percent of Americans drinking a cup of coffee every day1. Patients with arrhythmias are often cautioned against regular consumption by their doctors. Despite this specific concern, caffeine also offers health benefits, including antioxidants, improved metabolism, enhanced exercise performance, and increased alertness and concentration2. Studies have also shown regular coffee consumption can also yield positive heart health results, lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke3. With evidence showing caffeine’s positive impact on general heart health, there is a need to better understand the relationship between regular coffee consumption and arrhythmias.
Are Alcohol And Caffeine Triggers That Can Cause A
Many health experts believe there is a connection between caffeine, alcohol, and A-fib, and that either substance can trigger an attack. However, researchers are still investigating the specific causes.
Many factors identified as possible triggers for A-fib may work alone or together to cause the condition. This makes it difficult to establish what is or is not a trigger.
As a result, it is also hard to work out how much coffee or alcohol could trigger an episode of A-fib.
Alcohol is a known trigger for a specific form of A-fib known as holiday heart syndrome . HHS is the sudden appearance of A-fib in individuals who are otherwise healthy, but who recently took part in binge drinking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define binge drinking as more than five drinks for men and four drinks for women in a 2-hour period.
Researchers have noticed these cases are more frequent after weekends and holidays linked with increased alcohol use, which is how HHS got its name.
In addition, some studies have found a connection between the risk of A-fib and chronic, alcohol use. A connection was not found for moderate drinkers.
A 2005 study exploring caffeine use in Scandinavia did not find any connection between A-fib and caffeine use.
The scientific community is divided on whether or not people with A-fib can consume alcohol or caffeine safely.
The American Heart Association advise individuals with A-fib to avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine.

When you dip your head in cold water or take a cold shower, you stimulate the vagal nerve, which slows your heart rate. Afib And Caffeine The Research
Atrial fibrillation is the most widespread cardiac arrhythmia, affecting 25% of people during their lifetime.
AFib happens when the two upper chambers of the heart, called the atria, lose their ability to send electrical impulses to both lower chambers, called the ventricles. The disruption in this essential conduction process causes an erratic heart rate, often accompanied by chest discomfort, shortness of breath and fatigue.
The standard of care for many years has been to counsel people with AFib to stop caffeine consumption immediately.
However, more than 20 clinical studies about the effects of caffeine on AFib since 2000 lack conclusive evidence demonstrating that caffeine has a detrimental effect on AFib.
The Research About Caffeine Intake and AFib
Is Caffeine Safe Protective For Patients With Afib Arrhythmias
Some caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea may be safe and may reduce the frequency of arrhythmias, according to a state-of-the-art-review published April 16 in JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology.
Aleksandr Voskoboinik, MBBS, et al., analyzed multiple population-based studies to determine an association between caffeine intake and its effects on atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. The studies consistently showed a decrease in atrial fibrillation with an increase in caffeine ingestion, with one meta-analysis of 228,465 participants showing AFib frequency decreasing by 6 percent in regular coffee drinkers, and a further analysis of 115,993 patients showing a 13 percent risk reduction.
The authors found that caffeine does not appear to increase the likelihood of ventricular arrhythmia. In addition, caffeine doses up to 500 mg daily did not increase the severity or rate of ventricular arrhythmias. A randomized study of 103 post-MI patients who received an average of 353 mg/day resulted in improved heart rate and no significant arrhythmias. Only two studies showed an increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias, in which patients ingested at least 10 cups and nine cups per day, respectively. According to the authors, energy drinks should be avoided by patients with pre-existing heart conditions. Three quarters of patients with pre-existing heart conditions who consumed two or more energy drinks per day reported palpitations within 24 hours.

Other Risk Factors For A
Interestingly, people with A-fib report that the same activities, such as going for a walk, might prompt an attack one day and not the next.
However, there is a closer connection between obstructive sleep apnea and A-fib than any other risk factor.

Caffeine has long been suspected to be a trigger for atrial fibrillation, an all-too-common problem that turns the steady, coordinated beat of the heart’s upper chambers into a fast, erratic churn. While it is possible that drinking eight cups of espresso in an afternoon could spark atrial fibrillation, moderate caffeine consumption has little effect on its development, according to a large Harvard-based study.
Researchers followed more than 33,000 participants of the Women’s Health Study for 14 years. Over the course of the study, atrial fibrillation developed in just as many women in the group with the lowest caffeine intake, about one cup of coffee a week, as it did in the group with the highest caffeine intake, about six cups a day . The source of caffeine coffee, tea, cola, or chocolate didn’t make a difference.

Can Caffeine Be A Cause
Some people with atrial fibrillation are convinced that caffeine makes their symptoms worse. On the other hand, research doesnât support this. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and published on Medscape.com, caffeine doesnât cause atrial fibrillation.
In this large study involving almost 48,000 middle-aged and older people, researchers compared the risk of atrial fibrillation to how much caffeine the participants took in daily. After following them for 5.5 years to see how many developed atrial fibrillation, they found no association between caffeine consumption and atrial fibrillation risk.
One flaw in the study was they didnât have a group who consumed no caffeine. Itâs possible that completely abstaining from caffeine could lower the risk of atrial fibrillation, but this would need to be researched. This study also only looked at consumption of caffeine from coffee – not tea, soft drinks or chocolate. It would be even more convincing to see no increase in atrial fibrillation risk from caffeine in any form. They did find that caffeine in coffee slightly increases blood pressure when five or more cups are consumed a day.

UCSF Cardiology Researchers Report No Link Between Coffee Consumption and Arrhythmia
In the largest study of its kind, an investigation by UC San Francisco has found no evidence that moderate coffee consumption can cause cardiac arrhythmia.
In fact, each additional daily cup of coffee consumed among several hundred thousand individuals was associated with a 3 percent lower risk of any arrhythmia occurring, including atrial fibrillation, premature ventricular contractions, or other common heart conditions, the researchers report. The study included a four-year follow up.
The paper is published July 19, 2021, in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Coffee is the primary source of caffeine for most people, and it has a reputation for causing or exacerbating arrhythmias, said senior and corresponding author Gregory Marcus, MD, professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at UCSF.
But we found no evidence that caffeine consumption leads to a greater risk of arrhythmias, said Marcus, who specializes in the treatment of arrhythmias. Our population-based study provides reassurance that common prohibitions against caffeine to reduce arrhythmia risk are likely unwarranted.
In the new study, UCSF scientists explored whether habitual coffee intake was associated with a risk of arrhythmia, and whether genetic variants that affect caffeine metabolism could modify that association.
