Is Gatorade Bad For Kids

Abby Wambach vs. Usain Bolt | âI Can Do Betterâ? | Gatorade Zero

While Gatorade can be useful for active adults and some very active children, most kids do not need sports drinks regularly.

Sports drinks are now a household staple and are frequently handed out at sports matches. A 2018 study in Pediatrics revealed that 57% of adolescents drank a sports drink at least once in the previous week. Almost 14% drank a sports drink daily.

However, the vast majority of children do not exercise at a level of exertion or length of time that requires the performance-boosting ingredients in sports drinks.

For most children, a plain bottle of water will provide the hydration they need during a youth basketball game or high school field hockey event.

Health Concerns About Gatorade Zero

Yes, Gatorade Zero is Keto, but is it good for your health? This is one of the questions you need to answer before consuming vast amounts of this electrolyte water.

The biggest health concern people have about this is its use of artificial sweeteners, which has been closely linked to several health issues like cancer, digestive problems, and many more.

The good news is some studies concluded that artificial sweeteners are generally safe for human consumption.

However, not everyone should consume them. Drinks or food items containing artificial sweeteners are not recommended for people with phenylketonuria as they will not be able to metabolize phenylalanine found in aspartame.

Drawbacks Of Excessive Gatorade

For the children and adults who do not really need a sports drink for athletic purposesyet are drinking them regularlynegative health consequences can arise. Here are a few to consider:

  • Weight gain: Some research has suggested a small yet statistically significant increase in body mass index among children who consume regular sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • Dental problems: The acid in sports drink has been shown to wear down tooth enamel, and the sugars in the beverage can contribute to cavities.
  • Food dyes exacerbating behavioral issues in ADHD: A 2018 policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics was created to highlight emerging child health concerns related to the use of colorings, flavorings, and chemicals deliberately added to food during processing. One concern raised is related to artificial food colors, including Red 40 or Blue 1, both of which are used in Gatorade drinks. Certain studies associate artificial colors with exacerbate behavioral problems in those with ADHD.

At this time, there is no firm conclusion that food dyes or artificial food coloring causes ADHD. The FDA still maintains that these additives are safe.

Although Gatorade is marketed as a sports drink, it is consumed by people of all age and fitness level around the world. Even children drink it at lunch. Many people resort to Gatorade taking it as an effective hangover cure. Here are some pros and cons of drinking Gatorade.

Pros

When you engage in physical activities, it is important to keep your body hydrated. Drinking water is probably the best bet, but sports drinks often help you recover quickly. Gatorade has sugar as well as electrolytes such as potassium and sodium. You lose these electrolytes during strenuous physical activities, and Gatorade serves as one perfect way to replenish those electrolytes.

Gatorade has electrolytes that play a big role in regulating the body’s”fluid balance”. It also has carbs that provide you with energy. Gatorade claims that their sports drink is capable of hydrating better than water because of its ingredients. While Gatorade may be beneficial, you do not usually need it if you exercise less than 60-90 minutes.

Cons

Is Gatorade Zero Better Than Soda

Many people would consider Gatorade Zero better than soda, as Gatorade Zero is free of sugar and calories. However, Gatorade Zero still has artificial sweetenerssucralose and acesulfame potassiumwhich make it controversial from a health perspective.

The artificial sweeteners in Gatorade Zero are commonly used in diet sodas, as well. But Gatorade Zero still might be a little better compared to diet sodas, if you choose one of the flavors that doesnt have artificial colors .

Neither Gatorade Zero nor soda are really healthy drinks, though. If youre looking for a healthy alternative to soda, you should try seltzer water. Its just fizzy water with natural flavorno sugar or other sweeteners.

How Much Caffeine Is Too Much

Most experts agree that getting more than 600 milligrams of caffeine per day is too much. “But if you are sensitive to caffeine, even one or two cups of coffee could cause side effects. Did Gatorade Change Their Formula

Gatorade Zero – Is it healthy for keto/low carb?

I drink Gatorade every so often and had seen some people on reddit going on about their recipe formula changing, Im not sure I noticed the change myself but did do some research, and id like to share that with you.

Its rather interesting.

So, did Gatorade change their formula?Gatorade has changed their formula over the years.

One ingredient they used to add was Brominated vegetable oil , but stopped using it in 2013, as shown in this article.

The University of Florida also says that the original formula contained only sugar, salt, water, potassium, and lemon juice.

And the formula at the moment contains many other ingredients.

Gatorade also has a range of new flavors, some of which are low sugar or zero sugar.

As you may be aware too much sugar leads to health issues, so below Ill explain what Gatorade flavors have the least sugar, and other interesting facts about Gatorade such as which flavor is the best, and whether drinking too much of it is bad.

Is Gatorade Zero Better Than Water

If you acutely need rehydration and electrolytes, then Gatorade Zero may be better than water in that moment. But in most other situations, plain water would likely be healthier to drink.

If you need to rehydrate due to prolonged exercise or heat exposure, the benefits of Gatorade Zero could outweigh the drawbacks, compared to water. In those situations, drinking too much water without electrolytes can actually result in salt depletion heat exhaustion.

In such situations, you can also replenish your electrolytes with natural options like sea salt, coconut water, and other high-electrolyte foods. But Gatorade Zero and other sports drinks are a convenient option.

In normal day-to-day life, water is the ideal drink for most of your fluids. It has none of the extra, unnatural ingredients found in sports drinks like Gatorade Zero.

What Ingredients Are In Propel Water

Lets start by looking at what Propel actually contains. Propel has a few different product lines, including an Immune Support line. But most of the ingredients are the same.

So lets look at the standard Propel Electrolyte Water, as of August 2021:

Propel Berry Electrolyte Water Ingredients: Water, Citric Acid, Sodium Hexametaphosphate , Natural Flavor, Salt, Potassium Sorbate , Potassium Citrate, Sodium Citrate, Ascorbic Acid , Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, Calcium Disodium EDTA , Calcium Pantothenate , Niacinamide , Vitamin E Acetate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride .

Heres what I notice about these ingredients:

  • Propel is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium. These artificial sweeteners have zero calories, but some research connects them to other health issues. Well explore the evidence in more detail below.
  • Propel is a source of electrolytes. Propel has significantly more sodium and potassium than tap water. This can be positive if youre sweating from exercise or heat exposure. But is it too much sodium? More on that below.
  • Propel has many added vitamins. Vitamin C, E, B3, B5, and B6. Fortified vitamins likely do not help as much as those in whole fruits and vegetables. But Id still view them as neutral or slightly positive.
  • Propel has no artificial colors. Many zero-calorie sports drinks have artificial colors. Since these are controversial for safety, Id consider it positive that Propel doesnt have any.

How Many Carbs Are In Gatorade Zero

Gatorade zero comes in 20 ounce and 32 ounce bottles. The 20 ounce bottle of Gatorade zero has about 1 gram carb in it, while the 32 ounce bottle has less than 2 grams of carb.

The non sugar carbs in the Gatorade zero can be attributed to the natural flavours used.

When Should You Drink Gatorade Zero

There’s no strict drinking schedule for Gatorade Zero, meaning you can drink it any time of the day.

But if you want to maximize its electrolyte content, we suggest that you drink it after physical activity or spending a few hours outdoors or under the sun. Generally, you should drink it within an hour after the said activities.

Not only that, but you can also drink this electrolyte drink when you’re experiencing signs of dehydration like fatigue, dizziness, headache, or rapid heartbeat.

You can also drink it anytime you feel thirsty as it’s a great thirst quencher.

Does Zero Sugar Gatorade Have Electrolytes

As you can see, high sugar content is presented in Gatorade, but we know there are also sugar-free alternatives available on market. So are sports drinks a healthier choice without a high amount of carbohydrates? Gatorade Zero wouldnt have the same excess of unhealthy sugar as other lines of colorful drinks. It just has 10 calories per serving. Though we need to analyze the artificial sweetener used in its place.

Instead of natural sweeteners, Gatorade Zero and G2 use sucralose and potassium acesulfame. A lot of research studies have been conducted into the impact on the health of artificial sweeteners and other artificial ingredients, but there is no single solid result.

Some evidence indicates that artificial sweeteners are completely healthy in moderate quantities for use, but on the other hand, some reports have shown that they have linked the user to weight gain and other health problems.

Apart from the possible health problems regarding artificial flavoring, low-and no-sugar Gatorade solutions will provide a perfect way to regenerate your electrolytes, when exercising without too much sugar consumption.

A low-carb Gatorade may be a perfect sports drink if you want to improve your electrolytes during hard workouts, without eating a significant amount of added sugar.

Sugar Vs Artificial Sweeteners

Hydrate you body Ultima Replenisher Electrolyte Hydration review vs Gatorade Zero

So, which version of Gatorade should you drink? That depends entirely on your health and personal situation. Consistently consuming a lot of added sugar, whether in food or sports drinks, isn’t good for anybody as Harvard Health Publishing explains, consuming too much added sugar can increase your risk of heart disease, elevate your blood pressure and increase chronic inflammation.

They also cite sugary beverages as particular culprits in turning off the body’s appetite-control system and helping you consume enough calories to gain weight without even realizing it.

But even though artificial sweeteners help bring down both calories and added sugar content, not everybody agrees that they’re great. As the Center for Science in the Public Interest explains, animal studies have produced ongoing concerns about increased risk of cancer from both acesulfame K and sucralose, even though both have FDA approval. Both artificial sweeteners are present in Gatorade G2 and Gatorade Zero.

Still, you do need to maintain the appropriate electrolyte balance in your body, which sometimes means replacing electrolyte minerals â especially if you’ve been exerting yourself strenuously for a long period, or are taking medications that throw off your electrolytes. As Rush University Medical Center explains, electrolytes help regulate everything from hydration to your nervous system and muscle function, including your heart.

Is Gatorade Zero Better Than Regular Gatorade

Gatorade Zero has the same electrolytes as Gatorade, without the sugar or artificial colors. For this reason, some people consider Gatorade Zero healthier than regular Gatorade. However, Gatorade Zero has artificial sweeteners, which come with other possible risks. Therefore, it depends on your priorities and concerns.

Does Propel Raise Blood Sugar

Does Powerade Contain Caffeine?

I didnt find any research directly on whether Propel water raises blood sugar. However, Propel has sucralose, which has been shown to affect insulin resistance.

Sucralose is not absorbed in the small intestine like normal sugar, so it ends up in the large intestine. Apparently, it alters your gut bacteria there, affecting your tolerance to carbohydrates.

So theoretically, drinking a lot of Propel water mayworsen your blood sugar control. But this hasnt been tested directly, to my knowledge.

There are also suspicions that artificial sweeteners may cause an insulin response through another mechanism. That is, the sweet taste of artificial sweeteners may trigger an insulin response even without real sugar in your bloodstream.

So, proceed with caution. If blood-sugar control is crucial for you, Id recommend using a glucometer like this one to actually test whether Propel has any affect for you.
